All I want to say is what's the point of not believing in a God? Why believe that when you die, everything is over, your left to enternal darkness? Having faith is important. You HAVE to believe in something. If you don't, what good does it do to live?

I'm atheist, mainly because I've seen all these religions, and none of them I actually believe. I don't think there's an afterlife. on the plus side, I don't like how people push their religions on me, and how just because I don't believe in anything means I worship satan. wtf.

If you don't believe in a God, you believe in yourself. If you give up EVERYTHING in life, that's when it becomes bleak and pointless. I'm an atheist and I have lots to believe in.

I just stay out of religious dealings for the most part, it's a touchy subject and I'd rather not offend anyone, so I'll leave it at that. ._.

I'm agnostic. I'm not sure what's disguised business plans or real religions.

Faith in god is not stupid. It does not contradict reason. It is validated by evidence, even though it is not proven by evidence. You believe in stuff that is not proven all the time. Trusting your parents or other authorties requires faith. Faith is the foundation of all your knowledge, unless you plan on proving yourself everything you believe. If we limited ourselves to only what we know and can prove, the advancement of science and technology would have been halted a long time ago.

What evidence is there that there is the god that you believe in?

Something should not be taught unless it has substantial evidence to prove it. The basis of science and technology is that it has to be proven. It has to work. Why does someone do a scientific experiment? To either find proof and evidence that their hypothesis is correct, or that it is incorrect.

People used to think that gods carried the sun across the sky, that gods made the earth the center of the universe, that gods made plants grow. We know now that all of those things are completely incorrect.
The concept of a benevolent God that would rather see two people of the same sex beaten to death than than two people of the same sex loving each other, would rather see a woman being beaten by her husband than a woman becoming independent of her husband, would rather see an abortion clinic blown up rather than abortion performed, would rather see someone have their genitals mutilated than enjoy sex, wants to see his followers blow themselves up in order to win his love... these things are completely preposterous to me. There could definitely be a god, but I truly doubt that any of the faces most people attach to him are really the case.
The people who refuse medicine/medical treatment for themselves AND THEIR CHILDREN because "god will heal them" are honestly some of the stupidest people from any society ever.

Many things have happened to me that lead me to think there might indeed be some kind of higher power... but it might just be dumb luck. And if it is a higher power, how are we to know what kind of power it is? How are we to know that it wants us to do X and does not want us to do Y? How can we build religious laws and specific ways of worship for something that we cannot prove exactly what it is?

Thinking there could be a higher power is great. I think there could be one. But putting all your faith into the idea that there is one, and building your morals around that... OR putting all your faith into the idea that there is not one, and building your morals around THAT... you can't put your whole life in the hands of a guess.

I'm an Atheist, I suppose. Some would say a certain faith is a necessary crutch... but I believe that we human beings can walk without a crutch - on our own. Yeah. >_>

I don't think about the subject all that much. I guess you could say I'm a bit of an atheist, I suppose. I believe that life should not be governed by a set of rules from an invalid source. Of course, I understand most religions are based on principles to make your life more enjoyable - be a good neighbor, treat others how you'd life to be treated, etc. - I agree with all of those. However, I do not want a set of concrete rules governing my life that have absolutely no immediate consequences upon breaking them. Example - I have doubted my sexuality in the past, and I honestly still do. If I were to join almost any religious group and say that, I'd get told how my life choices were "wrong" and I needed to change them immediately in order for salvation. I firmly believe everyone should be accepted for who they are, how they act, and what they choose to do. If someone else does not agree with it, too bad for them. If it affects them in a negative/hurtful way, however, such as abuse or neglect, I believe action should be taken immediately.

I guess I'm sort of straying from the point of the thread, however. To make it short, if a God were to show up before me and tell me that they created everything, I'd say "Cool." and not try to prove them to be a Flying Spaghetti Monster. I am not going to devote my life to a faith that I honestly have never felt any connection with.

I'm an atheist and my beliefs on the subject can be summated as:

"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom too?" ~Douglas Adams

and Emily Dickinson:

"That it will never come again
Is what makes life so sweet."

I'm able to appreciate life more because I am the one in some trillion who made it. I made it to this blip and time and this time seems ever more precious and wonderful. I can see reasoning behind how we got here. I also love to argue against religion on a theoretical bases, but I'll hold my reservations here.

I have no idea where I stand religion wise.

I don't care where you stand, just don't stuff it down my throat in an attempt to convert me. :/

I'm very sorry to be a nitpicker, but...

Did Francis just say the Qu'ran is a cragged up version of the bible ?

Um, maybe in a round about way. What I meant was that God obviously had a desirable outcome when he inspired a written message, and I don't think He intended for there to be two conflicting messages out there. Wether the Bible got messed up like Muslims say, or Muslims messed up with the Qu'ran, either way, something went wrong.

My main problem with religion is that I can fathom how life began on Earth. I am the kind of person who questions everything and asks myself why I do something. If I feel uncomfortable doing something, I ask why. If I notice a trend in something I do, I ask myself why. I wonder about everything and need evidence from my own research. I question most everything I hear and look into it, if even briefly. I look into everything with unbiased reason, and if I feel like it, even biased reasoning from both sides. I practically live off reasoning and try to find a rational reason regardless of the probability.

What I find really ironic is that most people don't know the actual root of their religion. I actually find this concentrated in Christians (no offense). Just to give an example, my friend said supposedly Christianity started at the "dawn of time". How horribly ignorant. If that were so, than our universe is only two thousand years old. I'm not surprised how a lot of people don't know that Constantine created Christianity for the sole purpose of power.

And strangely enough, that same kid thinks that Christianity is older than Hinduism. And surprise surprise, guess what the three most ancient religions are? Judaism (somewhere along the line of 6000 years old), Zoastrianism (god knows [lol pun]) and Hinduism (Fairly ancient. I'd say around ten thousand years, from what I've read in my books).

As well, religious preachers must die. I mean, they claim their religion is better when they don't know shit about that other religion. Most preachers that I've seen and tried to convert me said this, and I quote, "You're worshipping the devil!". Say those words to my beutiful behind. I actually counter with a very valid argument, and I quote , "How do you know if you are not worshipping the devil yourself?" You know, the whole irony of this is that all religions, in general, actually tell you to lead a virtuous life. And we use that to fight against ourselves? Why? Because there's only one word we can use to describe the human race. Imbeciles.

There it was, my massive speech on racial ignorance.

I disagree. Thinking about death is one of the reasons why I choose not to affiliate myself with any particular religion. Now, I'm not atheist. I don't want to be called atheist; nor do I want to be called religious. I don't want to be called agnostic, either; I hate these "labels." For some people, "labels" make them unhappy. I was unhappy when I was religious, and I was unhappy when I was atheist. And then, I was unhappy when I was religious again. Of course, the one post I made, earlier, may have been mistyped and/or misread earlier, leading some to believe that I do label myself.

I soon came to realize that, in my eyes, I'm happier without holding a set belief- I'm not concerned over what happens after death, I'm not worrying if there's a higher power out there or not. I'm not questioning or hating people and/or their religions, either. I'm going to concentrate on living this life to the fullest before I concentrate on whether or not I believe in anything. I'm happy, because I have no religious philosophy to defend- no one can prove me wrong, or prove me right. I attempt to make the best out of this life, and keep an optimistic view over it, instead of following a set opinion.

Now, I highly disagree with the "what good is it to live" comment. As for the meaning of life, I believe that one should give/find themselves their own meaning and purpose. I don't believe life should be meaningless, but sometimes, it can be wasted.
