As Destructoid, a gamers' best blog-gy friend, just frontpage'd, a new study, conducted over several years with 1250 kids and 500 parents says that video games are not to blame for the rise in violence in today's kids and teens. In a subversion, the control group that did NOT play got into more trouble then the gamers.

Whilst that still doesn't explain why the violence rises - since video games are spread wider then the flu - I will not tarnish your joy by picking at it now.

Yes, but WHY ?

Even in the danger of sounding cheesy, I think everyone has the potential to be a nice person. But why are approx. 90 % of todays youth complete twits ?

Because this world has become so wrapped up in being judgemental about EVERYTHING. People don't like being put down, and other people laugh and make fun of the people who are ever-so-slightly different than them in clothing, taste in the opposite sex, race, religion, etc, hence they get into fights all the time.

Plus, smart people aren't having enough kids, when compared to who are generally referred to as "trailer trash" and rednecks. Removing survival of the fittest from our race does indeed have side-effects, but on the same note, if we hadn't removed it, a certain someone I care about wouldn't be alive.(selfish, I know)

Not to mention, we now live in communities where just talking to people you bump into is frowned upon. This isn't like the 1950's where everybody knew everybody else in the neighborhood, invited them over often, and kept on good terms with everybody.

Violence is rising because we spread the wrong kind of ideas to young people. Everyone with the potential to be good is basically being fed garbage that being smart and nice makes you lose in life, and you have to be mean and violent to get ahead.

Violence is on the rise for two reasons (That, at least where I'm from):

Poor people usually have a lot of kids, and they end up with no choice but to go for violence. Here, this is even bigger, because the president made a system that gives money for every poor person who has a child. Just so that he'll get reelected OVAR 9000 times.

On the other hand, rich people usually are so spoiled they feel that they are above the law. And, as long as they carry some money, they mostly are. Here, some rich teenager drove drunk, stole, injuried someone and carried lotsa drugs, and in the end, some money saved him.

We are in a society killed by the media. The golden ages of "I'm going down to the malt shop to pick up a cream soda for five cents" are over. Now that's code for "I'm going to do drugs or have sex and there's nothing you can do about it. *crag* you, mom and dad". Or at least that's what the media has scared us into believing.

Trust has died because a spirit of caring and goodwill has died with it. My parents believe "if you can't see them, hear them, or touch them, they're evil. Even if you can, they're still evil, stay away. However, you need to be more social".

So that basically makes ME screwed in life. =P

But parents need something new to blame. Video games were "the next new thing we can't get into", so they were immediately put to blame. However, we actually bond closer through these things.

In other words, we're dying because of fear.

I just hope that those of us that aren't occupied being dipshits will raise their future children not to be like that, and maybe make a difference.

Call me cheesy, but I still do believe everyone has the potential for being good, and nearly everyone is good somewhere.


... Even if we can't spread "nice" genetics further without inflicting wrong (Utopia NEVER justifies the means), can't we upgrade the education system ?

Put the hippies in the school, opr at least COMPETENT people who won't look away ? In my old school, some of my old class mates now dope IN THE LESSONS and the teachers manage to cut in filter circuits. Except for my epic ex-class teacher, who's one of the few that still has ambitions. He took them to the "Trouble Center" (I don't know the translation) as a class trip... I hope that made an impression.

Violence is on the rise because people have no moral basis for what is "good". Our society more and more is looking around and asking themselves things like "Why do I even have these morals?""What is even the point to all this?" They don't see a reason, so they toss morals and just do whatever it takes to please themself at the time.

If the human race has evolved to the point of self-actualization and determines that we have no purpose, that we have no meaning, then who cares about violence when life means nothing?

I believe that life does have meaning, and along with that comes a moral foundation that must come from something outside of ourselves. But if you don't belive that, then where are your morals from? Why do they matter? Many people have concluded that they don't matter, as evident by rising crime rates spanning from violence to corporate scandals.
