DO NOT PRESS HARD WITH THE PENICL/WHAT EVER YOU ARE USING.
Light strokes are best. The eraser is your friend. Instead of focusing on the big picture, try making shapes and shit, then "mold" it into what it needs to be. Remember, things in the foreground should overlap things in the background. (I used to make things in the background appear in front of the things in the foreground. e_o;)
