I have some good news for you. We’ve made great progress on the inFAMOUS Second Son patch on PS4 I promised you a couple weeks back. In fact, we expect to publish it on PSN tomorrow, April 17th.

Now first, let me update you on the specifics I promised, and then toss in a few extra goodies that we managed to squeeze in when nobody was looking. First — addressing one of the top two requests we’ve gotten — you’ll be able to disable the HUD, and once you’ve finished the game you’ll be able to adjust the time of day as you like.

We also promised, and have included, an option to cap the game frame rate at 30 FPS if you prefer playing this way. To set expectations for you all: this is a frame rate cap — not a lock. It won’t eliminate the rare instance of a dropped frame during gameplay.

But that’s all stuff you expected. Let’s talk about a few surprises, saving the best for last:

• A handful of localization text changes, and a couple of fixes for rare crashes in the game (Thanks to all of you who uploaded reports on those, they were extremely helpful!).
• If your controller runs out of batteries in the middle of gameplay, your game will pause. Our art director pulled a hamstring scrambling to get his second controller mid-boss-battle, so we needed to fix this.
• If you’re choosing expert difficulty, we let you know within the options dialog if you’re qualified for the “Unstoppable” trophy the moment you opt in.
• Photo Mode.

Wait, what’s that last one? We were totally amazed at the quality of the screenshots you all shared. Amazed. So we thought we’d try to help you all out. With this patch, you can enable photo mode within the options. Once you do that, clicking L3 will pause the game, and allow you to use a suite of our internal tools (like setting depth of field) to take even more amazing shots.

Final full disclosures and fine print: these options and settings, including frame rate, will reset to defaults each time you restart the game. We chose to not disturb our game save file format with this patch in order get these features to you as quickly as we could. Additionally, Photo Mode will only work in situations where the camera is freely movable by players. In scripted sequences/cutscenes you can still take screenshots of course, just not with the Photo Mode tools.

Just a few short weeks ago we officially released inFAMOUS Second Son, the most recent power-filled adventure from Sucker Punch Productions exclusively for the PlayStation 4 system. Immediately following the title’s announcement over a year ago, it was clear so many of you were eagerly anticipating Second Son’s release, the next installment to the inFAMOUS franchise. It was great to see such a warm reception to the title when it finally hit store shelves last month, and for all of us here at PlayStation and the team at Sucker Punch, it’s been really rewarding to share this launch with all of you. It’s exciting to see so many passionate inFAMOUS fans as you share your gameplay moments across all the social media sites including spectacular screenshots on Twitter and live streams on Twitch and Ustream.

So it comes with great excitement to learn that within the first nine days of launch, global sales of inFAMOUS Second Son exceeded over 1 million units*, making Second Son the fastest selling inFAMOUS title to date!

A huge congratulations goes out to the team over at Sucker Punch for creating such a wonderful game, a true testament to their passion as developers and commitment to their fans, and a great big thanks to all of you who have picked up the game and have shown us how you enjoy your powers.

There is still more Second Son to come. If you’ve finished both playthroughs and are still looking for more ways to play, we encourage you to check out inFAMOUS Paper Trail, the free bonus content that continues to expand on the Second Son universe. This six week episodic storyline introduces additional in-game missions that will unravel the mysteries behind the D.U.P. Again, it’s absolutely free for everyone who has a copy of inFAMOUS Second Son and a PlayStation Network account. Part Four releases at the end of the week.

Ten days.

That’s how long it’s been since I went to the midnight launch of Second Son here in Bellevue, Washington (just outside Seattle). I must have talked to over 100 people there, and so many more on social media and forums, Twitter, NeoGAF, etc. since then. It’s been amazing to see the excitement and passion of inFAMOUS fans, new and old. I want to let you all know how much your enthusiasm and support means to us, how it renews us, and readies us to go try to make even better games in the future.

We also want you to know that we listen to your complaints. Some big, some small, but we take them all to heart. We never want to lose sight of how important it is that we listen to all of you. We can always be better.

So to say thanks, not just for all the support but also for your passionate requests to make the game better, we’ve started work on a few small features which we’ll be delivering in the weeks to come.

Change Time-of-Day

Once you beat the game, a new entry will appear on the options menu to allow you to select the time of day! A very popular request indeed, and one we’re excited to enable for you all.

HUD On/Off

Especially for those amazingly talented screenshot taking folks, we’re including an option to let you turn the HUD on and off.

Cap at 30FPS

Internally we prefer the unlocked frame rate, but we recognize that some players find it distressing. So we’ll provide a way to ensure the game is not bumping up over 30FPS, if that’s how you prefer to play.

Of course, our coders and QA team are working to try to identify and resolve key bugs, and we’ll look at incorporating important fixes in the patch too. And who knows… if we’re inspired enough, we may sneak a few other little things in too. Time will tell!

We’re all working hard to release these updates as soon as we can. Time-wise, the earliest we could have the patch and new features ready is about two weeks from now, so stay tuned for another update — we’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready to go live. Virtual reality! Immersive gaming experiences! Laurence Fishburne jokes!

We finally took the covers off Project Morpheus this week, throwing our hat into the emerging world of Virtual Reality. This baby’s still a prototype, but it’s showing immense promise so far.

That’s not all we got this week, either. Long-awaited superhuman adventure inFAMOUS Second Son is out now on PS4 (make sure you check out the Paper Trail missions… super cool), and gamers are all over it. Careful with those Twitch streams though — spoilers abound!

Oh, and let’s not forget Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Final Fantasy X | X2 HD Remaster, and Vlambeer’s new arcade dogfighting sim Luftrausers, either. What a wild week it’s been… and I haven’t even mentioned GDC 2014!

Other highlights: Share enhancements and HDCP off coming to PS4 in an upcoming update, PS Vita is getting a gaggle of new apps, and we got a closer look at the upcoming supernatural thriller Murdered: Soul Suspect.

Hello PlayStation Fans! My name is Chuck Doud, and I’m the Music Director here at SCEA WWS. With only two days left until the launch of inFAMOUS Second Son, I’d like to take the time to introduce you all to PlayStation’s state-of-the-art music and sound studio and give you a behind-the-scenes look into the production of the soundscape of Second Son.

This video highlights the type of sound and score we produced for inFAMOUS Second Son in close collaboration with Brad Meyer, Audio Director at Sucker Punch Productions. As you play through the game and experience Delsin’s story, the score and sound will guide you through the his explorations and combat encounters. You’ll dive into Delsin, discovering his superhuman powers and feeling his exhilaration as he takes on the Department of Unified Protection.

It’s been nearly a year since the entire PlayStation team transitioned into their current San Mateo headquarters, and we’re excited to share our new audio facility, which is specifically built as a centralized music and sound studio to accommodate close collaboration between our Music and Sound teams — and our developers across the globe — to support WWS products. Our studio is equipped with two control rooms (7.1 and a 5.1), two dedicated live recording rooms, and 17 individual 5.1 audio edit suites (or pods, as we like to call them). These facilities allow us to produce industry-leading music and sound, providing a deep level of integration with our development teams and the artists we work with.

Our team has produced incredible scores and sound for some of your favorite franchises and games, including the God of War series, the inFAMOUS series, Journey, The Last of Us, The Unfinished Swan, and the Uncharted series. Hey everyone! I’m the audio director at Sucker Punch, and I’m excited to show off some of the fun and painstaking attention to detail we took with the sound design of inFAMOUS Second Son.

We knew we had to up our game on all sonic fronts because we were launching on PS4, so we started early by identifying the key areas we wanted to focus on. Obviously the powers were going to be the most important aspect, so we began conceiving ideas before there was even visual concept art. We created a language for each power set which we used as a palette to craft the design of each set. With smoke, it was charcoal, air, and extinguishing flames. For neon we strapped a contact mic on our Sly Cooper neon sign and also recorded fluorescent tubes, electromagnetic interference, and a very long induction coil.

Another area we knew needed to come alive was the ambience. Since our game takes place in Seattle, what better way to capture the bustling city than running around with microphones, capturing the subtle nuances from birds, sirens, and car alarms, to rain and traffic? We took things to extreme measures with our ambient design, setting up unique audio events based on the neighborhood, the time of day, and whether or not Delsin or the D.U.P. is in control of a district.

Another concern for us was the final mix. We mixed the game at Sony’s Bridgepointe Studio, which was a wonderful experience. The game sounds great no matter what listening environment you may have: home theater, TV speakers, headphones, and so on.

Going even further, our team also worked closely with the PlayStation hardware team to develop a custom audio mix for the new PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headsets which provides an outstanding example of how the audio mode enhances the sound experience.

In inFAMOUS Second Son, your gameplay style and moral choices influence your superhuman powers in profound ways. If you’re a goodie two-shoes when using your Neon powers, you’ll be able to briefly slow time while zooming in for precise shots — crucial for pegging foes in their legs and immobilizing them. If you play as a power-drunk renegade, you’ll want to kill enemies in rapid succession to keep your combo meter growing, which unlocks new abilities more quickly.

There’s a hushed excitement at Sucker Punch as we approach our March 21st launch date. We’ve been working on inFAMOUS Second Son for almost three years, and in just a few days we’ll finally be able to put it into your hands. Several of our team members are traveling around the world sharing our latest gameplay demo with press and fans, and today we get to show you a mission playthrough from that build.

Pre-order inFAMOUS Second Son

Like the previous games in the inFAMOUS series, Second Son gives you the option to use your powers heroically or ruthlessly. The path you choose will affect every aspect of the game, from character relationships to powers development to the story itself. In this play through, Delsin has convinced Fetch Walker, a Conduit with the power to control neon, to help him take out a group of anti-Conduit protesters. With Delsin’s influence, Fetch is willing to exterminate the “haters” and anyone else who gets in their way.

For players who choose the ruthless path, combat is fast, explosive, and lethal. Restraint is unnecessary. The faster you can obliterate your enemies, the sooner you’ll gain access to your strongest powers, and it doesn’t matter who gets hurt along the way. For those who choose to be heroic, combat is about accuracy and precision. Explosions are great, but civilian casualties are not. Your rewards will come from helping citizens and from using your abilities to capture enemies alive. The standards are higher, but for those who want to be a hero, that’s exactly the point.

Next week, the choice will be in your hands. Will you embrace responsibility to become the city’s savior, or will you unleash your wrath on everyone, regardless of the consequences? We know either way, you’re going to have a great time. You have until March 21st to decide. :)

With the the March 21st launch of inFAMOUS Second Son on PS4 just a few weeks away, we recently reached out to you all via Twitter, Facebook, and regional forums with a call for any questions you might have about the latest entry in Sucker Punch’s open-world, superhero series.

Duly, you deluged us with queries, which Brian Fleming — studio co-founder and producer on Second Son — has kindly taken the time to answer. Read on for his responses, and let us know if you have any additional questions in the comments below.

How did you come across the idea for Second Son? (‏@Crodogile)

Brian Fleming: Like a lot of things, it’s not a single point. It’s actually the reverse — you have a bunch of ideas that eventually coalesce and gel into what becomes Delsin Rowe.

The character himself was an offshoot of the decision to do Seattle. Once we picked Seattle, the idea of taking the roots of the area and having a kid who grew up on one of the Native American reservations here really was the genesis of Second Son.

On the flipside, one of the early decisions was that we were going to make a game where you have multiple power sets. That was an important decision to us, as we felt that a single power set — for inFAMOUS 2, in particular — got overly sophisticated and more difficult to actually play. It just made it a little bit too complex for some players.

So we wanted to simplify the controller layout. One way to do that was to have layered power sets, and that was a very specific, early design decision.

You take those two things and start working on them in parallel, and eventually they became Second Son.

Why didn’t Sucker Punch choose real cities as settings in previous games, but then chose to use a real city setting in Second Son? (‏@BlackViper75)

Brian Fleming: It’s not as big a change as you might suspect. Obviously Empire City was inspired by New York, and New Marais was inspired by New Orleans. With the jump to next-gen hardware, we wanted to take that same jump in realism.

It made a lot of sense to us, in this case, to do Seattle properly. For example, it’s pretty hard to imagine doing Seattle and doing a fictional Space Needle. Some kind of galactic tower just doesn’t make sense. Maybe we’re just being provincial because we live here, but it seemed like it had to be the real Space Needle. And if it was going to be the real Space Needle, it had to be the real Seattle.

It was exciting to be able to take on all the nuances and quirks of the city. The locals here will recognize all the little opportunities we had to find unusual local vendors — the car wash guy, or the donut shop, even the gum wall in the bowels of Pike Place Market — all these little things. It was an enjoyable task for us. It made doing this more fun, more real — it was just a good time.

How lively is the city? (Cringles88)

Brian Fleming: The population of the city is a big part of how you gauge your progress in Second Son. The team working on that aspect of the game is always trying to make things more detailed and add more volume.

We also want pedestrians to be intelligent. There’s a lot of combat in the game, and pedestrians do as pedestrians do in real life: run away! So when you’re in heavy combat, you shouldn’t expect to see lots of people wandering around. There’s a balance to strike between having the city feel lively, but also have pedestrians behaving realistically.

How destructible is the city? (T1000peX)

Brian Fleming: The most important stuff that you’ll be destroying is the infrastructure that the DUP is putting into the city. You’ve seen some of this in the demos we’ve done. This stuff was designed to break in the most spectacular way we could manage. It’s all simulated, multi-stage breakables — so if you blow up one corner of something, the whole thing topples over and smashes to the ground. That’s been a lot of fun to work on.

It rains a lot in Seattle. Is it the same in the game? (leonidass22000)

Brian Fleming: Yes, it does rain a lot in Seattle in real life, and it rains a lot — or looks like it recently rained — in Second Son. We’re not trying to do an accurate weather sim as much as make the game astoundingly gorgeous.

We’ve changed the weather throughout the game to make it beautiful, and make it our favorite time of day — whether that’s just after it’s rained at dusk, or when the sun is breaking through the clouds. The art director and the tech artists all work to try and define these beautiful scenes that just happen to take place in rainy Seattle.

Do I need to play inFAMOUS 1 and 2 to entirely understand the story? (‏@MHND95)

Brian Fleming: Second Son takes place seven years after the events of the first two games, so in a lot of ways there’s enough time separation that the game very much stands on its own. If you know a lot of detail about what happened in previous games that might add some richness for you, but from a plot standpoint, it’s absolutely not required.

Will we see characters from inFAMOUS 1 or 2 in Second Son? (Conor Linehan)

Brian Fleming: This isn’t an homage to the previous games. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be a couple of fun things in there for the fans — but it’s not what Second Son is about. It’s not about, say, Zeke being a front line character. This is Delsin’s story.

I’d like to know what Sucker Punch changed about their game to excite themselves for another entry. (‏@Golwar)

Brian Fleming: If you’re talking strictly as game makers, the most important change for us was changing the power set that the character has. Sure, we changed cities, we changed consoles, we changed a lot of things about how we produced cut scenes, but the most important change from a game-making perspective was the character — and the power sets that he has.

How many powers does Delsin Rowe have? (Frederik Strange Dybsø)

Brian Fleming: To avoid spoiling the game, we’ve really only talked about Smoke and Neon powers, and we’re keeping that stance until the game launches.

One of the things we haven’t talked about is how many powers are in each set, and how many upgrades are available. Without putting specific numbers on it, there’s a substantial number of individual powers in each set, and many — if not all of them — are upgradeable.

Do good and bad decisions affect the story a lot more than in previous titles? (@GTAVFAN13)

Brian Fleming: The most interesting thing about inFAMOUS Second Son is that you’ll be making decisions about the trajectories of some of the other characters, which is a different take on it. But ultimately, the most important changes aren’t narrative ones. There’ve been systems added to really foster different play styles, and that’s the thing that’s going to be the most enjoyable aspect of your second playthrough.

Will Delsin’s appearance change the more evil he gets, like Cole’s did? (Michael Kilfeather)

Brian Fleming: Yes, a lot of the things that players expect — like the changes in the character and the changes in the powers — are present. They all relate and feedback to the karma systems. So you’ll have vastly different visuals and powers depending on which way you’re playing.

Will inFAMOUS use the light bar function? (@MHND95)

Brian Fleming: We’re huge fans of DualShock 4. The touch pad, the light bar — we take advantage of all those things in various ways. Some of them are surprising, some of them simple. You drain power by touching the touch pad, for example.

But the biggest things that we’re excited about regarding DualShock 4 are the improvements made in the tension on the sticks, and the shape of the sticks themselves, all of which make for better control. Not just for inFAMOUS, but every PlayStation game is going to benefit from the smaller dead zones, the improved triggers — all of that closed the distance between the player and the game.

Will there be online multiplayer? (Bjarke Bjerregaard)

Brian Fleming: No, it’s a single-player experience, but of course you can share it with others using the fantastic Share button on DualShock 4.

Will there be online, user-created levels and if so, is it any different compared to the previous inFamous games? (Edres Mo)

Brian Fleming: UGC is not a part of this title. It was part of inFAMOUS 2, but not a part of Second Son.

Would you consider another “what if” scenario like Festival of Blood for a spin-off, possibly on Vita even? (@hayzink)

Brian Fleming: We’re really happy that Second Son went gold and we’re certainly doing a lot to prepare for launch. Once we get through the launch, I’m sure we’ll have something to chew on regarding DLC, but we’ve nothing to announce right now.

How long is the game? (Andreas Nørehave Vestergård)

Brian Fleming: We’ve already established the size and shape of the inFAMOUS experience, and Second Son is very much an inFAMOUS game. We understand what we’re trying to accomplish there in terms of scale. Certainly the world is dramatically more detailed than ever before, and our focus was on improving the quality of every interaction. What we’ve tried to do is take the inFAMOUS experience that you know and love and “next-gen” the entire thing on every level.

How big will the install be? (Michael Briggs)

Brian Fleming: 24 GB.

Will there still be things to do within the game world after the main story has finished? (@el_appyday)

Brian Fleming: The inFAMOUS games always have secondary content spread throughout the world. There’s a fairly large DUP presence inside the city that remains to be cleared out after you finish the main game. They’ll continue to launch incursions into the city after you’ve wrapped up the campaign, so they’ll be plenty to keep you going.

And then, of course, for a lot of players the first thing they’ll want to do is go back and play the other “karmic” direction. Between that mix of things, people should have plenty to do in the after-game and in their second playthrough.

What was the most technically challenging aspect of creating inFAMOUS Second Son? (Sean O’Coileáin)

Brian Fleming: Probably the design implementation and the boot-strapping of our new effects system. When we went into this project, we knew that we wanted to start from scratch on our visual effects. The VFX for a game like this are as important as any aspect of what we do, so we didn’t want to just take our old system and add a couple of features.

So the system was redesigned to entirely run in the graphics chip. There’s so much computational power there. And then we had to design an authoring system, and it ended up being dramatically more technical to author particle effects and special effects in our game than it had previously.

There was a really big technical jump required of the art team. They had to get comfortable with linear algebra and vector fields, and all kinds of crazy advanced mathematics. It’s really to their credit that they were able to train themselves and come to an understanding of all the math that goes into making the particle effects work. And the results are spectacular.

Do you plan to release a demo of the game before its release? (Isaac_Vlad)

Brian Fleming: Unfortunately, we don’t have plans to do a demo for this game.

Will the Seattle music scene feature in the game’s soundtrack? (JynXten)

Brian Fleming: Without getting into too many specifics, there are some local bands whose music you’ll hear. It’s not exactly the point of Second Son to be a Seattle music scene experience, but we certainly recognize that it’s a big part of what the city is about.

We used Dead Sara’s version of a Nirvana song for the trailers, a Mudhoney song in the TV commercial, and one of the famous venues here, The Crocodile, is in the game. We’re very much aware of and respect the Seattle music scene, so it had to make an appearance in the game.

As you may have seen just a few weeks ago, SCEA’s SVP of Marketing, Guy Longworth, revealed the first campaign spot for the upcoming PS4 exclusive, inFAMOUS Second Son. Featuring the tunes of Seattle-based, Mudhoney’s “Touch Me I’m Sick,” that gameplay spot is an awesome example of the sorts of experiences you’ll be having later this month when the game launches.

We think the spot was a great kickoff to our Enjoy Your Power campaign, and as we were working on ideas on how to communicate the absolute joy that comes from having extraordinary powers, we started to wonder, “What would it be like if it happened in real life?” From there, the seeds to this new spot were sown. After a few months of hard work, we’re all happy to show you what we think that might be like… and how much fun we think it would be to mess with (Or shake up?) the D.U.P.

We can’t wait until Second Son launches on March 21st so you can tell us what you think of your powers.

Delsin Rowe strolls down a shadowy length of docks with ample confidence. Caches of illegal drugs have been hidden among the houseboats moored there, which is a disagreeable notion to our super-powered, rough-around-the-edges hero.

But with eye-searing neon and seething smoke at his disposal, Delsin has little to fear from the drug peddlers peppering him with gunfire. Bullets ricochet off the flashing neon light around his head as he flinches — they’re more an annoyance than a danger. As he leaps into the air to greet his enemies, powers flaring to life, he can destroy them or subdue them. And that’s up to the player.

Choice has always played a vital role in the inFAMOUS series, and inFAMOUS Second Son is no exception. Amidst all the open-world action that developer Sucker Punch has set in its own Seattle, Delsin can enter combat as a careful hero or a ruthless force. These methods of play not only affect how each battle scene is approached, but how Delsin’s powers manifest themselves.

Smoke and neon, the two powers Sucker Punch has revealed so far, can cater to either play style. Players unconcerned with the lives of civilians can wreak havoc without fear, weaponizing the environment to destroy enemy APCs, or plunging into the ground to unleash devastating shockwaves that don’t differentiate between enemy DUP agents and innocent bystanders.

But Second Son also empowers heroic players in this digital playground. Players can modify Delsin’s basic neon blast with a slow-motion aim that highlights an enemy’s leg, tangling them in glowing binds. Subdued, they’re no longer a threat to Delsin, but they needn’t lose their lives to his super-human barrage.

When Delsin gets in close to stunned enemies, small prompts on screen allow players to choose between executing and subduing their targets. With one button press, Delsin can vaporize an enemy soldier in a flash of glittering light, or leave him struggling on the ground with a battered ego.

Like past inFAMOUS games, these choices dramatically alter the way players perceive each scene. Crowded tunnels teeming with civilians may be a challenging test of patience and skill, or a gleeful shooting gallery. Regardless of a player’s preference, Delsin’s powers encourage both styles of play. Even traversal skills like the smoke-fueled dash can be turned into a lethal attack or an exercise in restraint.

But the choices presented to Delsin don’t all erupt in the heat of combat. When he catches up with the hot-headed Conduit known as Fetch, Delsin can take her under his wing and redeem her, or encourage her violent tendencies and corrupt her. These choices not only alter the course of the narrative, but change the mission sets presented to players afterwards.

With so much power at his fingertips, Delsin can save a lot of lives in inFAMOUS Second Son… or he can leave a long trail of bodies. Ultimately, that choice is up to the player when Second Son launches for PS4 on March 21st.
