Something I wrote for the YCotW.
I wrote it because I wanted to - I kept working on it for days, and...Somehow, "Luck" happened to become the theme for this contest. It fits, I think because the character thinks she's somewhat lucky near the middle of the story, and stuff. ...And the closing sentence. whatever. xD;
One of my friends told me "Art or a literature doesn't have to be GOOD, as long as you know how much effort you put into it." I don't know if that's true or not, but... It's actually my favorite quote by anyone so far.
So, here you go.
~~~
Reader, I must ask you beforehand...You've heard of luck, haven't you? It's the one thing that tricks people. The one thing people barely think about, yet think about all the time? Yes, it's a contradiction in itself, however, it's one quality that...Possibly a lot of people may have. Yet, all the same, a lot of people don't have it. Now, dear reader, what if I told you a story of someone who didn't believe she had any luck to begin with? Would you read on, or would you note it was "pointless," and move on? Reader, I encourage you, if even for a little bit, to read on. If only for a paragraph, or a couple sentences. See if it interests you, and, if it does, continue reading...
If there was one quality in the world she didn't happen to have on her side, it would, of course, be luck. Never once in her life had she been lucky. It might be hard to believe, but, it is the cold, hard truth. Possibly it's that you're born with luck, and she was just born without it? Or, possibly her personality just repelled any luck that was coming her way. Both ideas were possible, depending on how you look at them... But, nonetheless, there was one thing she had her mind set to. Jhae Kellenkrai wasn't, even the slightest bit, lucky. Still, however, she kept her personality at a optimistic level. Of course, that changed when she thought a bout herself and luck, not to mention when she was alone, without anyone around her, but... That didn't matter, right? At least if she could act happy, she'd be accepted in public, if even only the slightest bit.
However, it seemed, that one day, in the midst of winter, her fate seemed to change. It wasn't that she had a strong relationship with fate, as it is the actions that day told her something just had to be wrong.
January 4th. That was the day something seemed to...Change.
As every day, she'd wake up at four in the morning. It wasn't so much that she had to, but... She preferred being awake by the time she got into school. It wasn't a problem, but, very rarely did she get a decent rest. Around five, an hour after she woke up, she'd brush her raven-black hair, putting it into a messy pony-tail. That normally took about several minutes, due to the fact that she needed to waste as much time as she could. After, she'd normally stare at herself in the mirror for a few moments. Watching her sapphire gaze look right back at her, due to the reflection of the mirror's glass...
Those things never dealt with luck. So, obviously, that part of her schedule went perfect, without fail. The following part of her schedule, however...
It didn't go so well. Seeing she lived alone, she had to find money, had to find wherever the hell she put her books the following night, around one in the morning... It was odd, seeing all of the time, it rendered her late. Today, however, January 4th, it didn't. She located what she needed right away, this day, and...Still had time left? "...This isn't part of the schedule," She mumbled to herself, having her voice trail off into the silence. "So...Why is luck treating me well today? It's...Probably nothing I should look forward to."
The next few hours to herself passed rather quickly, and, before she knew it, she was flicking the television on. It was on the news channel, as she had left it last night. The school she couldn't say she favored all that much, was shown burning to the ground. A news reporter was talking in front, making the picture behind her barely viewable, but, still... Considering it was a plaintive day, dreary and cold, it didn't make the feeling any better. "...About fifteen thousand casualties, due to buildings near the four-story school building burning down, as well..."
Luck. It fooled her that day. Jhae realized that the exact moment that single sentence was finished. Luck. Luck, luck...Luck. All along, she believed she'd longed for luck. Now...She couldn't detest it more.
Luck. Luck... It fooled people, didn't it? Was it truly that simple? "...Luck. It's luck that did this, right? Luck has always been against me, so... That's it, right? RIGHT?" For the last simple word of her question to herself, she let out a scream.
"January 4th... I wonder if someone in the world is lucky, today~?" |
