For those of you who don't know, the game is playable at GameStop/EBGames.

I had the fortune of playing it today =D

Short version: Great controls, great gameplay, unsure if it's still Metroid.

Long version:

I only had the chance to play up to, not including, the first boss, the Berserker Pirate. There are two difficulty levels. I chose the harder one. Each save profile is linked to a Mii.

The controls are absolutely amazing; the cursor moves fluidly, and is amazingly accurate. The default control settings are a bit...eh. It's much better on the advanced control settings, though.

The game starts off with Samus in her ship. You do some stuff, such as entering an access code to get to the Olympus, the ship that is the first level, along the lines of the Frigate Orpheon from the first Metroid Prime.

Now, here's where I'm unsure about the game.

There are quite a few NPCs that you can talk to on the ship by pointing at them and pressing A. Part of Metroid is the solitude of the game, knowing you're all alone. Whether this problem will persist remains to be seen. On the flipside, voice acting is phenomenal; Zelda really could take a hint from this game. Samus doesn't talk, something which sort of perplexes me. She's not necessarily a silent protagonist; she's had monologues before, and in Metroid Fusion, she actually had conversations with the computer.

Anyway, eventually, the ship gets under attack by the Space Pirates. You fight through them, see a few scripted events, blah, blah, blah. The puzzles feel like Metroid, luckily, but with a few Wiimote twists. For example, you get an energy cell, and you have to lock it into place by putting it in, then twisting the Wiimote. It feels a bit gimmicky, to be perfectly honest, but it does add to the experience.

As this is the very first portion of the game, I'm unsure whether the Metroid tradition of backtracking will return.

Overall, I'm unsure if it's still a Metroid game, but it is a great game; I'll be sure to let you know my full impressions come the 27th.
