I didn't really start having fun with the game until I reached the Battlerock Galaxy...it's a problem that I've noticed in quite a few critically acclaimed games - the first portion of the game is dull. Actually, now that I think about it, this is a problem with all three of the top three games on GameRankings (Ocarina of Time doesn't get going until third dungeon, Metroid Prime doesn't get going until Phendrana Drifts, Super Mario Galaxy doesn't get going until Battlerock Galaxy). Don't get me wrong, it's a great game - it's just that after the first playthrough, it can get a bit tiresome to play through the beginning portions of the game again.

Well, yeah, the beginning is just a tutorial kind-of thing. Just to show you the basics. Sure, it'll be boring.

Not necessarily. By the time you've beaten Dino Piranha, you basically know all that you need to know.

Well, the galaxies became more fun and you got more power-ups and such.

SPM: chapter 2 had a gimmick... chapter 3 had francis, so it pwns (also a gimmick, because you have no tippi)

Chapter four has squirps, and the space theme, and space swimming.

Chapter five has flint cragley, so it pwns.

Chapter six.... Total gimmick. YOu should know what happens.

Chapter seven: again, total gimmick.

Chapter eight: Your people keep leaving the party.

TTYD:

Chapter 1: Long, monotounous, boring...
Chapter 2: Long, monotounous, boring, and dully colored,
Chapter 3: Pwnage Smile
Chapter 4: It has a gimmick.
Chapter 5: It has flavio. Anything with flavio in it cannot be bad.
Chapter 6: Best gimmick ever! I've wanted to be a detective in kindergarten, and I also used to love trains, so I would've loved this place back then XP Untill smog, which would've creeped me out.
Chapter 7: It's in space, and you fight the main enemy, that in itself is a gimmick.
Chapter8: This place sucked. Nintendo runs out of ideas when they get to the last level.

1st paper mario:
Chapter 1:...

Actually, this game saves it's sucky parts for the prologue, and gets better after that Smile

I disagree >_>. And what do gimmicks have to do with this topic, anyway?

Yeah, I agree, but most of the game is pretty slow. Most of it is just getting power stars...the only part where it actually gets interesting is that last Bowser boss battle (which I haven't beaten yet cuz I keep dying, but that's a whole other story). It would be nice if more stuff happened in the story before you fight Bowser for the last time.

And what does SPM and gimmicks have to do with this topic? o_O

All great games start slowly. It's just to trick you that the game's fun is just around the corner and when it is, you don't expect, and it hits you smack in the face.

Agreed 100%

This kind of thing is probably why I got bored with OOT and Metroid Prime 3 so quickly: takes too long for the game to get interesting.

The way I see it, a weak beginning is the worst thing to have in a game; it makes it far more tedious to play through, and some gamers may not have the patience to go through it. In my opinion, a truly great game maintains a good quality from beginning to end - or, perhaps, an option to skip the tutorial stages.

I've noticed. I'll start of getting stars really slowly, when all of a sudden I start collecting them so fast it's like there's no tommorow.

Maybe because you spoiled all the beginning.

Sure it was boring in the beginning for those who have played super mario 64 and sunshine.
