The music. It was, without a doubt, the best music in the Mario series, and probably some of the best music any game has had this year. And, the reason isn't due to the fact that its orchestrated, alone. Whereas other, more recent Mario games relied off of simple, catchy melodies, this one was a big step forward, with deep, complex music that captured your imagination and emotions. It was enjoyable every step of the way.

I also enjoyed the ingenious, creative level design, that combined complexity with simplicity, and offered no shortcomings.
