It is written into you. You are all selfish bastards because of one reason.
Self-preservation.
It's the goal of any organism. It's that minimal selfishness that makes you assert yourself, it makes you do processes that benefit you to survive. Why did organisms develop with selfishness written into them? Because those without didn't last very long.
I hereby conclude unselfishness as nonexistant. |

Well, yes. That is nature. I certainly don't deny that it doesn't exist.
And, some people need to be happy with who they are, and do certain things to ensure that. It's one more way, I suppose, that we can be selfish.
I don't mind doing whatever I need to to make myself happy, though, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
... Such are my views on the matter. |

well now hold on a second. Lets not throw in hardwired natural functions of the mind with petty personality flaws. I mean yeah thats true if you're just eyeballing it, but the need to live isn't the same as the need to...get a bag of Cheetos at the expense of your roomate! Not that...I would know about such things >.> <.< >.> |

It's not the only thing that people deny mostly.
We're also all bloodthristy, admit it or not. |

Every discussion needs someone who pours oil into the fire he himself lighted previously and put a ton of controversially sources gasoline on top.
Let me be that person by saying:
"And what about Jesus ?"
He ignored his self-preservation for a lot of slimy, stinking, sinning bastards and mankind, too. |

He ignored his self-preservation for a lot of slimy, stinking, sinning bastards and mankind, too. | There are two ways to answer that.
The believer way: He was the son of God. Do you expect him to be selfish?
The non-believer way: Actually, he didn't. |

Yes, that's the natural order. No, there is such a thing as unselfishness. Is it commonly practiced and seen? No. Does it exist? Yes. Do people go out of their way just to aid a group or someone while expecting nothing in return? Yes.
I'm one of those. The quiet one. The dying breed who exists to be the pong ball between the paddles of clashing ideas...and so I stray. I lurk. I leave it behind. Until the damage can be repaired to their souls...
It's natural that any being wishes for self-preservation, self-gratification, and anything that improves his or her social status. However...it's not non-existant. Unselfishness is out there. Is it the most powerful source in the world? No. Will it ever grow greater than its opposite but equal-in-magnitude counterpart? Also no. But it is out there...I know that to be true. |

I believe everyone can be selfish, and alot of actions are selfish But also Unselfish acts happen every day. I'm not talking about helping someone out to make you feel good about yourself, or being nice to someone, so they will like you. ( as those are self serving)
But more Doing something... just because. Like helping someone pick up papers that slipped out of there bag, and onto the floor, regardless if you may be late for whatever you may be doing next, you help them.
Maybe its a Random act of Kindness, maybe you are helping out a friend, or someone you look up to, Or maybe even an enemy. Doing something with no ulterior motive, is being unselfish.
And we cant be completely unselfish. but to say it does not exist is a little extreme. |

Sure, selfishness is a part of all organisms. There really isn't anything wrong with that, either. Self-concern, traditionally, has been looked down upon, but it's a necessary component of success in both the natural world and in the human world. However, I disagree with how you say that there is no such thing as unselfishness. Everyone has a certain level of selfishness, but even the most dastardly criminal has a slimmer of unselfishness. People often do things that they don't want to do, with no reward, just because they are told to, or asked to. It's very common among friends and family; it's common among co-workers. Heck, there's several people out there that will drop a dollar or two in some homeless guy's bucket. |

Actually, I see different levels of unselfishness, But none are 100% unselfish. |
