A portion of a CVG interview with id Creative director Tim Willits...
CVG: Finally, id is the inventor of the first person shooter. Do you think that there's a danger that the genre will one day disappear or do you think that it will endure, evolve and if so, what kind of FPS's do you think we'll see in the future?
TW: The FPS genre I feel is the very best genre because it places you i.e. the game player into the experience like no other type of genre does. But even the word genre is even a bit too constricting, and I think that people should remove labels from games and let games just be games.
I think that that's where the evolution and not only with the FPS, but also with strategy, RPG's, action games, platformers, and there's a lot of different directions that these games can take.
So I've always felt that the future is very bright for first person shooters. We have so many fans and there are so many different directions it could take that I believe that in itself, it'll be around for years and that Id software will also be around for years too.
