- die a few times and an Assist Block will appear
- these blocks offer up special items (i.e. Tanooki leaf)
- die five times and an invincible leaf will appear
- the invincible leaf gives you the Tanooki suit as well as star power
- P Wing block instantly transports Mario to the end of the stage

Sounds like Mario Kart to me.
If you're in last place, you get all the good items as a handicap. Actually, it's a lot more like Brawl where you get the Smash Ball after getting raped less than five times consecutively.
this is a single player game
