A detailed look at jumping in Super Mario Bros. 3

How often do you think about the jump mechanics in Super Mario Bros. 3? About once a day, right? Well, this guy has got you beat no matter what. He's put together some data into graph form, which gives us a much better look at how jumping is handled in the game.

- The red line with the dots is the actual measured distance from the ground over time.
- Blue is a parabola fit to the jump path using least-squares approximation.
- Light blue is a parabola fitted to just the first part of the jump.
- Light red is fitted to the part of the jump past the apex.
