I'd say Homestuck was pretty funny in Act 1, got Great in Act 2, amazing in Acts 3 and 4, was kinda entertaining in Act 5 Part 1, dragged on through a bunch of bullshit in Part 2, then pretty much rebooted into Act 1 Redux.
I managed to stick through with act 5 okay because, while complicated as it could get, it still managed to have an intriguing plot featuring well-established characters that I already knew very well act 6, on the other hand, immediately introduced us to four new characters that we only vaguely know and are expected to care about just as much as the ones before. keeping track of the kids, trolls, exiles, ancestors etc. was hard, but manageable because they were all interesting and did neat things. then act 6 became a soap opera and I said *crag* it. no hussie I do not care whether or not jake will date dirk or jane I do not read comics for the romance
I have trouble caring about most of the original trolls and the new/alpha kids, but I sure am loving most of the new trolls so far. They show so much more personality just in the way they look and are less like copy and paste. I understand the original troll culture was strictly no fashion at all and pretty much uniform dress code aside from a few people and things, but you know, being able to distinguish between characters and being able to implicate things about them from the way they appear is a nice thing. It makes things interesting, and you'd want to know more about them.
i think the biggest downfall of homestuck is the number of characters it has. well, plenty of stories have lots of characters, but the majority fall under unimportant or side character category. there are too many characters that are focused on and it creates the illusion of a lot of complicated things going on all at once. i think that's what drives people away from physically reading it, because once they get past john just *crag*ing around in his house they start to not make sense of things. well, i think it's mostly the fanbase that drives people away from reading it, but, you know, people that actually tend to take the time to sit down and attempt to read it seem to run into the problem of losing track of things and just giving up. the new characters give a sense of it being a new universe and all but i dont think they should be a main focus. there is rarely any focus on the original characters now and lots of unsolved problems and plot threads with them. i distinctively remember a few scenes just abruptly cutting off and never being returned to or resolved, even hundreds of pages later.
it's only been a a few hours too, and it already has nearly $200,000
who wants to bet this is going up into the millions
