GoNintendo Trivia starts TONIGHT! New trivia tournaments every Thursday
GoNintendo Trivia will be held once a week on Thursdays at 7 PM Central and last about an hour. The time may change for future sessions. The chat moderator, MattTGF, will be its host and administrator.
The number of questions will be 15 each session. This number may increase in the future. Each question is worth one point.
GoNintendo Trivia's format will be each participating user whispering his or her answer to MattTGF, after he has posted the question, while the channel is muted. The amount of time to reply will be specified (usually the time limit will be 30 seconds or less), and it is measured with a stopwatch. As long as a correct answer is given within the specified time limit it will be considered valid; anything sent after the time limit will not be accepted. Trivia is not a race. Participants are not allowed to spam multiple guesses, as only a participant's first answer will be accepted. Think before you answer.
Whispering is to privately message a user. This can be done in context to trivia by typing "/msg MattTGF YourMessageHere" It may be useful for users to copy and paste "/msg MattTGF".
Spelling is not vital so long as the host can easily determine the intended answer. Only submissions in English will be accepted. Any other language may result in a ban from #GoNintendoTrivia.
As stated the channel will be muted, except during periods between questions, to allow for the host to select the winner of the particular question and allow discussion among participants. Tallies of how many questions each person has scored will be continuously updated in the topic. This period will be a minute to two minutes or more. Due to the real-time nature of this trivia experience, there is likely to be a bit more downtime than not. The host will only announce once when he is ready to post the next question before the chat is once more muted.
Questions will be prepared to be search-resistant. Using Google or other reference material is cheating; just your immediate top-of-mind knowledge is being challenged in this event. If a question's answer might be easily searched online, the time limit for that question may be significantly reduced. Answer sharing is not permitted, and considered cheating. Any cheating will result in a ban from our chat room.
Spam messages through whispering will result in a permanent or 30 day ban from #GoNintendo and #GoNintendoTrivia without further warning, as the event is an extension of #GoNintendo and GoNintendo.com, and the person will be reported to IRC authorities. The same applies to spam messages in the channel, when it is not muted.
There will only be one winner, which will be who scored the most points.
Even if there is no chance for overcoming the leader, stay and try to gain as many points as possible, as the winner can elect to not submit any content to GoNintendo, in which the runner-up will be given an opportunity. The runner-up in this instance will only have the awards the winner wishes to surrender, such as submitted content, and voice. The GoNintendo site rank and the honor of being champion cannot be given away by the winner. However, the winner can be disqualified under specified circumstances given below, which then the runner-up will take all the winnings.
In the event of a tie, the users who are tied will continue past the 15 question mark in sudden death, under the same rules as before until the tie is broken.
Question Submissions: Users may suggest question ideas for GoNintendo Trivia to GoNintendoTrivia@gmail.com, though not all submissions may be used or used immediately in order to maintain an element of surprise. Each person who submitted the question before it was asked will be acknowledged during trivia as the question is asked. GoNintendoTrivia will not notify a user regarding the timing or usage of their question(s). GoNintendoTrivia will thank everyone who sends material in.
To make it fair for users who did not submit a used question, submitted question(s) may be modified, and have a piggy-backed question with it. For example: "Who is Ed Boon's favorite Mortal Kombat character?" to "Who is the co-creator (executive producer) of the Mortal Kombat series, and what is his favorite Mortal Kombat character and its catch-phrase?" Overall, questions will be reworked or have a piggy-backed question. The given example had both done to it.
TO BE ELIGIBLE IN THE CONTEST: Each person must have a user account in good standing on GoNintendo's website (and the IRC). GoNintendo will not validate user accounts prior to trivia events for timeliness; it will be the user's responsibility to maintain their individual accounts. As with our standard site rules, one person per account, and one account per person. Duplicate identities or team efforts are disallowed and grounds for both disqualification from the trivia event, and potentially banned from participation on GoNintendo.
Participants must maintain an active reputation in #GoNintendo chat, both before and after the trivia events. Newcomers who have never been in chat before are welcome to participate, but must then make efforts to maintain an active reputation. Failing to maintain an active status after a trivia event will result in forfeiture of any winnings.
A winner may not participate for one trivia event immediately following their win, so other GoNintendo users may have a chance to be spotlighted.
Winners are not required to have or produce any personal content for publication on the site, but it is highly preferred (read PRIZES, below).
If a winner is found to not meet eligibility requirements, the next highest-ranking participant will be acknowledged as the winner, with all prizes and recognition therein.
PRIZES: The winner of the trivia will have the honor of being voiced in #GoNintendo for a week. Voicing offers an enhanced user icon, higher ranking priority and better visibility in the user list, and allows a user to speak even if the chat is muted; very good bragging rights.
Winners will also have their site rank promoted to a special title, "GN Trivia champion!" which will appear in their site profile and alongside their avatar.
The winner will also have his or her work highlighted in #GoNintendo's chat topic, provided the content is relevant, appropriate, and of good quality (half-hearted content may be rejected). This could include: written articles, editorials, reviews, previews, music remixes, artwork, personal cosplay photos, etc. Distribution methods of this prize/content may vary, at GoNintendo's discretion.
Perhaps the grandest reward of all will be having his or her content posted on the main page of GoNintendo and promoted through its respective social channels, such as FB and Twitter, the following Thursday. This content should be exclusive to GoNintendo and not available on another site. Our regular news stream already efficiently handles the posting of off-site content. We may consider previously-published, off-site content, but once submitted, it will become property of GoNintendo and stored on our servers and databases, with no credit or links to any original source, except to the user's profile on our site. Users may retract this transfer of ownership agreement at any time by making a written request to site administrators, and any relevant work will be removed from our database (and no longer visible on the site). Likewise, this is intended to be an event by and for GoNintendo's fans and community, so anyone hungry to boost their own personal websites or traffic are discouraged from participating. All submitted content will be used or modified as necessary at GoNintendo's discretion.
Winnings will take effect immediately, except for the published content prize, and will remain in effect until the next winner is crowned (due to the next trivia event or from winner disqualification). As noted in the eligibility requirements above, winners must maintain an active reputation in the #GoNintendo chat, both before and after the trivia events. If the winner has maintained their eligibility (specifically an active status) for one week following their win, their personal content will also be eligible for publications on the GoNintendo homepage and shared via their social media channels. If the user is banned, all winnings will be forfeited.
The trivia winner should e-mail GoNintendoTrivia@gmail.com with their user name(s) and any content they'd like to share (or plan to create and share). MattTGF will also make a point to contact the winner through the IRC's personal messaging system.
IRC/Chat Information: Participants may use the IRC through the following link: http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=chat. Other methods are possible, but this will be best for those not familiar with the IRC. From the provided link, a participant can input his or her desired name into the "nickname" box and under that where it's titled "channels", participants can erase "#GoNintendo" and type "#GoNintendoTrivia" and connect, or insert a coma with no additional spacing after "#GoNintendo", followed by "#GoNintendoTrivia" to be something like this: "#GoNintendo,#GoNintendoTrivia". Participants may also log into the IRC like normal and once in, type, "/join #GoNintendoTrivia".
Additional questions regarding this trivia event or our IRC presence can contact MattTGF in the IRC channel #GoNintendo or e-mail GoNintendoTrivia@gmail.com
