Nintendo has said that their 3DS sales were weaker than expected, due to slower sales outside of Japan. How bad is the situation really? Let's take a look at some DS vs. 3DS sales figures.

The 3DS now stands at 22.19 million sold, 19 months after the console launched in February 2011. 19 months after the DS launched in Europe in March 2005, it had sold 26.82 million units. The thing is, the European release was more than three months after the DS launched in the US and Japan in November/December 2004. Once you factor that in, the figure is 21.27 million DS units. That would give the 3DS a slight sales advantage over the DS.

No doubt, this is a crucial turning point for the 3DS. Nintendo needs this holiday season to be a big one for the 3DS if they want sales to at least stay even with the DS. Let's hope that's exactly what happens!
