Nintendo comments on YouTube 'Let's Play' situation, adding ads to certain videos

Nintendo sent over this statement to us just now...

As part of our on-going push to ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way, we became a YouTube partner and as such in February 2013 we registered our copyright content in the YouTube database. For most fan videos this will not result in any changes, however, for those videos featuring Nintendo-owned content, such as images or audio of a certain length, adverts will now appear at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips. We continually want our fans to enjoy sharing Nintendo content on YouTube, and that is why, unlike other entertainment companies, we have chosen not to block people using our intellectual property. For more information please visit http://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/faq.html

In other words, Nintendo has ads running on fan-made Nintendo videos that hit a certain length or feature certain content. Thanks to Nintendo for the comment!

Could've been far worse. So many media companies just mute or outright delete videos featuring their content.

Yeah, I was gonna say what Gold said. I think this is pretty cool for Nintendo, and it actually gives them reason to make their games more easy to LP. They're really starting to get hip with the internet and making it easier to share content like screenshots and QR codes. Who knows, maybe they'll actually develop a recorder program for their games.
Reply by Fortran May 16 2013 14:59 GMT
Better than Microsoft's attempt to be hip.

I think if people are going to refuse to upload videos on the grounds that they cannot make money from them, they need to rethink their whole goodness-of-my-own-heart free advertising argument that I've seen passed around so much today.

I'll be impressed if YouTube can auto-detect gameplay videos (without music)

They can't think, gold, they're entitled children who have a fit if they don't get their way.
Reply by Fortran May 17 2013 03:26 GMT

But some people make a legitimate living off this, especially the ones who have expanded to ustreaming before uploading videos to YouTube

I just realized. People like Chuggaa, Lucahjin, and NCS need to find a job quick now.
Reply by Ignorant May 18 2013 02:57 GMT
They'll just stop doing let's plays of Nintendo games.

I'm guessing absolutely nothing will change, but if it does, it just means people will start making LPs for the sake of making LPs again instead of purely for monetary gain.
Reply by Fortran May 18 2013 07:11 GMT
If this eventually means LP's wont be able to earn anyone money that just means less people like Pewdiepie in the world and i'm fine with that
Reply by Fracktail May 18 2013 14:26 GMT
Too bad, frictional games and all the other 'horror' creators would never do that. They're making too much dosh from him.
Reply by Ignorant May 18 2013 15:59 GMT
if people are making LPs because the ad revenue from them is their main source of income then they missed the point about 3 miles back
Reply by sims May 18 2013 16:00 GMT
also considering your entire shtick is taking someone else's video game and talking over it I don't understand why you think you're entitled to the money in the first place
Reply by sims May 18 2013 16:04 GMT
its a type of service you can offer, the reason lps are so popular is people like them A LOT. When something grows to that level of popularity the person using their voice and opinions are perfectly entitled to earning money off of it.

Given some time to relax and reflect on the situation, I do agree that there are some legitimate issues caused by this decision (albeit only in certain situations, in which Youtubers are relying primarily on income from their videos and do not have any non-Nintendo-related videos to fall back on) that will need addressing.
That said, I still maintain that the backlash of the situation is being hugely blown out of proportion.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus May 18 2013 21:09 GMT
the basis of LP is still based off of playing a video game where you (probably) had nothing to do with its development, and talking over it for the internet. people who do this and are making money off of it are essentially profiting off of other people's property. LPs are a legal gray area and any amount of backlash isn't going to change that
Reply by sims May 19 2013 03:12 GMT
besides, people who use LP as their main source of income are still missing the entire point of it
Reply by sims May 19 2013 03:14 GMT

that doesn't change the fact that its a type of service, usually under trans-formative use unless the lp-er is too lazy to draw in like a *crag*ing border on the screen. The whole point of capitalism is to make a profit in whatever way you find suitable, and if that involves having a horse ram you from behind while someone plays the ghost busters soundtrack then more power to you.

It's like someone giving commentary over an entire movie, which would not be allowed on YouTube. Even though games are not fully scripted like a movie, most of the experience can be portrayed with video. Most LPs are sharing the game experience and not transforming it. Many people watch these videos instead of playing it themselves.
Reply by Francis May 19 2013 21:29 GMT
A game involves a player in the process of presenting itself, a movie doesn't. By sharing the experience the LPer is having with the game he is sharing a unique presentation of that game.

Yes I did. And there is nothing wrong with my statement.
