Coming from an OXM interview with producer Ben Mattes...
"Alfred is Batman's only ally. He's the only person Batman can call an ally in this game; he doesn't have Gordon, Oracle is not in the picture, Robin has not come into the picture, Catwoman, in whatever limited capacity you would call her an ally, is not yet in the picture, Huntress, Nightwing - whoever else you can imagine in the extended Batman family, none of them are around.
He is alone with Alfred being the only person he can confide in, and Alfred fundamentally does not agree with or understand why he's putting his life at risk on this most challenging of all nights. He's like, 'Stay at home man, let's have a Christmas ham, and tomorrow morning it'll all blow over. Don't do this. And if you are going to do it, don't go fight the cops. This is law, man, these are the protectors of the city. These are civil servants, you can't go treating them with the contempt and aggression that you treat an ordinary thug on the streets.'
And that helps to reinforce how far that relationship has to grow, that Alfred would so directly challenge Batman's motives. Not his actions, but his motives, and the reasons for doing what he does, shows that these two are not where we know they end up, so there's another awesome opportunity for growth with that relationship. You go to the Batcave and you return to the Batcave multiple times in the game and there are various gameplay and narrative reasons to return. One of which is Alfred hangs out in the Batcave, and we have this sort of rich conversation system with him, whereby the more often you go back and talk to him, the more you learn his perspective on the game's events, the various enemies and characters that Batman is encountering, and Alfred's perspective on how Batman is handling the situation. So for people invested in that relationship, there's a whole system of conversations face to face that help reinforce, again, how that grows."
