Every Steam user now has access to Steam Trading Cards, Valve's virtual collectibles that can be traded with other Steam users and spent for various in-game goods. Collecting cards allows Steam users to craft badges for their Steam profiles and "earn rewards like emoticons, profile backgrounds, and coupons."

Steam Trading Cards entered beta back in May, supporting a handful of Valve games and Don't Starve. Right now, more than 30 games support Steam Trading Cards, including Team Fortress 2, FTL, GRID 2, Monaco, Trine 2, Super Meat Boy and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Valve promises more games will support Steam Trading Cards with each passing week.

I rarely role-play in games. I’d like to believe it’s because I have such a well-defined personality that I simply can’t accept not being myself, but the real reason is that I’m rubbish. I only ever have one well-defined notion of what I want to be: Garrett. Every opportunity to create a character in a game for me means loading up on stealth options, and when I do I don’t really feel the character. I’m just a dude in the dark. But my last Skyrim character was lost to the great platter splatter* of October 2012, and I’m keen to go back the Fus Ro Dah. The question of whether or not I replay as a Garrett lookalike or roll something more adventurous has been answered with this mod that puts Team Fortress 2′s heavy into the dragon’s lair. I can tell I’m not going to be loading up on stealth options with this one.(more…)

It's 2013—having people meet through online dating sites if not through video games is not rare, but in Redditor IdentityProductions' case, it's tough to deny just how intense the love for their partner and Team Fortress 2 is. Even Valve sees it. Earlier today, a Reddit thread was posted with a link to a photobook sent to Valve. Why send a photobook to Valve? Well, it had a ton of pictures of a couple who met through Team Fortress 2—these pictures included some of their cosplays over the years, and even commemorative tattoos (!). That couple got married, and that wouldn't have happened had they not played TF2. Here's what they sent Valve: As most of you know Damien and I recently got married, we meet through Team Fortress 2 almost two years ago and we really wanted to send something nice to VALVe as a thank you for bringing us together so we had this little photo book printed and mailed it to them. Here’s what it said: “Our first convention together. Naturally cosplayed Sniper and Scout” “We also cosplayed Medics.” “Rebecca’s first time in Canada. Damien as Medic with one of our doves, Archimedes. Rebecca as Pyro.” “We also went to a cosplay skate. Being as Canada’s freezing we went as winter Heavy and Soldier.” When we weren’t together we continued to show our love for TF2. Damien as BLU Engineer and Rebecca as RED (our rivalry continued).” “For a while we continued going back and forth. Damien to Florida.” “Rebecca to Canada. Until we couldn’t take the pain of leaving each other any longer.” “In May of 2012 Rebecca moved to Canada. The weekend of Anime North, we couldn’t resist.” “We continued to craft TF2 items.Like these Ballonicorn PJs and Sniper cosplay.” “Or these comfy matching Pyro PJs.” We even got a small tribute to the game.” “Soon after moving we got engaged! A nice photoshoot ensued…” “Which didn’t last long.” “But we’re all friends in the end, right?” “We got married on March 2nd, 2013.” “Our wedding party.” Here's the letter they included with the package: Dear Valve Team, I am writing you today to tell you our story of how Team Fortress 2 brought us together. My wife and I met through Team Fortress two years ago when she saw my Meet the Medic cosplay online. Despite our love for opposite teams, me-BLU and her-RED, we started playing Medic and Heavy together and made a great team. We talked constantly, working together to refine metal and craft hats eventually becoming inseparable on and off game. Although she lived in warm, sunny Florida she eventually opted to move to freezing Canada with me after going back and forth for long visits. We were happily married on March 2nd 2013. Our vows included “you are the Medic to my Heavy” and we played “Still Alive” from Portal as our cake cutting song. We have our own small business now, Identity Productions, and have done quite a few TF2 commissions including Itsy Bitsy Spyers, Anger hoods, the Wraith Wrap, a couple of Sniper vests, a Soldier jacket replica, and more. We wanted to let you know that if it wasn’t for your hard work on this awesome game we probably would have never met from so far away and we want to thank you all for making such a great game that has brought together so many people through killing tiny baby men and trading hats! We had this little photo book printed just for you and we hope you will take a moment to look through it and give yourselves a pat on the back. Sincerely, Damien (Steam name: Feicoon) and Rebecca (Steam name: FennecFox777) Murphy Valve wrote back. What was in the package? This. How sweet! A few weeks ago we sent VALVe a photobook and letter (see comments) about how we met through TF2 and are now married. This is what we got back! [IdentityProductions]

Like the world’s most fun STD, Team Fortress 2 really likes to spread itself around. What’s that itch, Joe Danger? Why it’s a just a case of the hats. That’s not a wart on Poker Night at the Inventory, it’s an achievement. And though the one game we all wanted to have a little bit of TF2 in it has remained resistant, there’s a new strain that’s proven to be too much for its immune system. Surgeon Simulator 2013′s rib-cage cracking ridiculousness really did look a lot like the Meet The Medic trailer, and Valve has allowed the characters to appear in Bossa Studio’s scalpel sim. It was inevitable.(more…)

Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie are set to pop wheelies on Steam on June 24, and the sequel port will come with additional Minecraft and Team Fortress 2-themed goodies. You'll be able to play as the Team Fortress 2 cast - don't tell Joe you're racing without him! - and Minecraft Guy, plus pull from a whole suite of Minecraft items, objects and environments in the level editor.

Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie on Steam both benefit from Big Picture mode and will incorporate Steam Workshop into their level editors. Keyboard and mouse controls, as well as game pads, are also supported.

We were really impressed that so many of you resubmitted your items as Gold Star submissions since our last post two days ago. Now, given that this is what we asked you to do, you might wonder why we’re so impressed, and the answer is that nobody’s ever done anything we asked ever, so this is a bit of a novelty for us. We’ve been asking Robin Walker to stop breaking into our houses at 2AM to show us his latest hat designs for two years now, and we still wake up with him hovering inches over us, whispering “No worries” and holding up his sketchpad.
But enough about our night terror! The important part is that, to celebrate, we grabbed some of those Gold Star submissions and shipped them. “How much did you ship them?” you ask, your eyebrow arching suspiciously. We shipped them all the way, guys. No half-measures. We shipped the HELL out of these items.
This isn’t the big update we hinted at in the last post, by the way, or any of the other super-secret update content we've been working on that we haven't even hinted at yet*. This is just a little taste, a tide-me-over, what the French might call an amuse-bouche (“Your mouth pleases me.”) Enjoy! Or as the French say, Bon appétit! ("It is good that you are starving.")
*Except just then.

The villager character's face from Animal Crossing introduced yesterday as a playable character in the new Smash Bros. is rather psychotic and insane for a brawler game. Even the Team Fortess heavy and spy has to get their act together after hearing about him. This is too scary, I can't even imagine what his final special move could be. Maybe he takes your face. Over the weekend we hit a new landmark, with over ten million dollars paid out to over 400 contributors and partners. And close to $250,000 of that figure will be paid out to the sixty-plus people who created the Robotic Boogaloo update.
If you just read that last paragraph and are kicking yourself for not making that beard of bees sketch a reality, here's the good news: We've also done a bunch of work improving the item submission tool, so it's never been easier to submit. The tool now automatically tests new creations against a set of standards, meaning anything you create is now significantly more likely to be game-ready.
You can now also see how your items will render on TF2 characters within the tool, making the creation process itself even quicker. Plus, every item submitted through the tool will now be tagged with a gold star, showing everyone that it's been vetted. FYI, our next update is going to ship exclusively with "gold star" items, and there's going to be no limit on how many we'll include. (Check out the Workshop FAQ for more info.)
In short, there's never been an easier, faster or more rewarding time to submit to the Workshop. If you're not making that beard of bees dream a reality, let's face it, at this point it's probably a motivational problem on your end.

  • Added a new promo item
  • Unusual hats that are tradable can now be listed on the Steam Community Market
  • Updated the network interpolation and update convars so they can be changed immediately after changing class and respawning. This allows the automatically executed [classname].cfg files to update the values.

  • The ITFItems/GetPlayerItems and ITFItems/GetSchema WebAPI interfaces are now deprecated and will eventually be removed. External tools can call IEconItems/GetPlayerItems and IEconItems/GetSchema for current data.

Valve's next Dota 2 documentary, Free to Play, is almost done, we've learned. They're privately showing it off to "playtesters" all throughout June. A tipster just passed me this e-mail, inviting screeners to a movie-watching party at Valve's place: I reached out to Valve marketing boss Doug Lombardi to ask what was going on. His response: "Beta testing the documentary on The International." The International, of course, is Valve's annual Dota 2 tournament in Seattle, during which players come from all over the world to compete for a giant cash prize. "But wait a minute," you might be thinking. "Valve released a short documentary about The International back in November. Are they making another one?" Indeed they are. Says Lombardi: "That was a recap of last year’s event. The documentary is a different thing, and really looks more at the gamers than one specific tourney." Here's the trailer for the documentary, which Lombardi says is called Free to Play. (You might recall Valve registering the domain freetoplaythemovie.com last December.) This isn't the only film Valve is making. Earlier this year, Valve boss Gabe Newell and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams announced preliminary plans to make movies based on Portal and Half-Life. They're also working on a Team Fortress 2 short. Image: Annalaatikko/deviantArt

During Sunday's episode of Venture Bros., Valve's long-running multiplayer extravaganza Team Fortress 2 got its very own television spot. Not bad, for a nearly 6-year-old game! Watch it here: There are also some new Venture Brothers-themed items in the shop, and every Adult Swim item is on sale.

Do you like
Adult Swim? Do you like The Venture Brothers? Do you like questions? Because we have some bad news: We’re all out of questions. Is there any good news? Questions are back in stock! But that’s not even the best part - we’ve once again teamed up with Adult Swim for three new Venture Brothers-themed items. The terrifying Bacteria Blocker, the whimsical Weather Master, and the also terrifying Breather Bag are now available in the Mann Co. Store. And to celebrate both these excellent new items and the rich history of sales in general, we’re putting our existing Adult Swim items and bundles on sale.

Not sold yet? Well then, we dare you to watch this TF2 commercial that ran during The Venture Brothers premiere last Sunday. Feel free to enjoy every one of its fifteen seconds - the final, desperate fifteen seconds of the crabby old you that refused to be sold.

Andy Warhol once said, "In the future, anybody who wants fifteen minutes of fame has to fight me for it." Brave words from a man who was pummeled to death seconds later by Matt Damon. Luckily, with fame-bully Warhol out of the way, people can now be famous for as long as they want. We decided to start small with a 15-second commercial starring the TF2 mercs, which will appear this Sunday at midnight during the Venture Bros. premiere on Adult Swim.
