Hello gamers! I’m Philippe Morin, one of the co-founders of Red Barrels. Our first game, Outlast, is coming to PS4 next week, and I’m excited to share that those of you who are PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download it completely for free.

Outlast itself is a survival-horror game created by a team of 11 people with one common goal: to scare the *bleep* out of you.

Here’s the story so far…

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, the facility was recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation. Taking advantage of the Asylum’s history and remote location, they’ve been operating in strict secrecy. That is, they were until the reporter arrived.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur has broken into the facility, and what he is about to discover inside will walk a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something entirely other. Trapped with nightmares old and new, his only hope of escape will lie with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

So, in short, you’re a journalist who’s found himself in a very wrong place at the very wrong time. You can’t hope to defend yourself against the mutated patients of the asylum, so you have to sneak, run, and hide… or die. We’ve done our best to create a memorable roller-coaster ride, one that entertains, scares, and leaves you craving more.

In fact, one of the most fun things about watching players make their way through Outlast has been watching the terrified looks on their faces, so we decided to step things up a notch. Newly added on PS4 is a difficulty level we call “insane.” If you feel brave enough to pick this mode, you’ll have very low health, very few batteries, no checkpoints, and no chance to save your game. It’s do or die. Survive or start again.

So here it is – turn off the lights, crank up the sound, and hold tight to your controller, because true horror is coming straight to your console next Tuesday.

Hi, Playstation.Blog readers! 10tons is back this week with another PS Vita game — a unique and eccentric, skill-based puzzler called King Oddball.

As the title states, King Oddball is… unusual. Sure, the Angry Birds comparison comes to mind quickly, but King Oddball stands on its own handsomely.

Like Angry Birds, King Oddball is about clearing the level of enemies by squashing them with lobbed objects. And the way it’s done is all about physics.

Unlike Angry Birds, King Oddball’s levels fit in single screen, and there’s (basically) only one kind of ammo to lob: rocks. And you don’t get to throw them around any way you please, either. Oh, no. The King automatically picks up the rocks and swings them back and forth by his tongue, and the player merely releases the rock by pressing X or tapping the screen. That’s it.

It may sound easy, and it is… until it gets hard. It may also sound simple, and it is… until it gets complicated. The beauty of the gameplay mechanics lies in the fact that we’ve tightened the physics engine’s precision screws as tight as they go. That way we achieve accuracy and predictability with the way the rocks bounce and roll. You really need that predictability, because typically there are many more enemies to take out than you have rocks for, so you need to take out several targets with each rock. That, in turn, requires perfect timing when releasing the rock.

I guess it’s difficult to explain well. Try the game yourself — there’s a free trial!

When we developed King Oddball, we had the gameplay down early and knew it was good. We had a whole lot more trouble coming up with the theme and related bells and whistles which would fit the gameplay. All we were sure about was that it wouldn’t be about cartoon animals.

Eventually, the design became a bit surreal, and we soon realized more surreal is the way to go. We’re really happy with how it all turned out. Who, or what, is King Oddball? We all have our own pet theories. Why does he want to destroy the world? Your guess is as good as mine. What the heck is the tongue and the rocks about? Not sure, make what you will of it!

The icing on the art style cake is the awesome soundtrack (which was recorded live, by the way). There’s not nearly enough accordion in games.

So yeah, King Oddball. Try it. And collect the moustaches.

A new generation of gamers will also have a chance to discover why Thief, one of the founding fathers of the stealth genre is so well-loved, to explore the rich lore of The City and to experiment with a different style of gameplay that emphasizes thoughtfulness and patience as well as skills and reflexes.

We respect players. I know it sounds like empty pandering, but we really do take it to heart. We’ve given you a huge amount of options to customize your experience to enable you to play exactly as you prefer. You want the most complete immersion possible? We let you remove any clutter from the screen: the interface, the reticle, any visual indicator that isn’t part of the game world.

You want the most extreme stealth challenge? No problem — try Iron Man mode, which results in Game Over if you die, whether it’s at the beginning of the game or during the very last mission. And the reverse is true for players who just want to enjoy the story, who can take advantage of different options to help them through the game.

The development team has given their best to ensure this Thief is worthy of its legendary predecessors. We’re huge fans of the original games in the series, and this new entry is a genuine reflection of the passion and talent of a truly dedicated team. We cannot wait to share it with you all on later this month.

In The Witch and the Hundred Knight, you play a warrior devoted to the witch Metallia, a vindictive mistress hellbent on expanding her swampy dominion until she's taken oven the world. In case you hadn't guessed by the description or by looking at it, the PS3 action-RPG comes from the minds of Disgaea studio Nippon Ichi Software.

In addition to laying out the story, a new trailer shows how the Knight does Metallia's bidding across various lands. Highlights include how combos can be customized by assigning different weapons to each of the hits, and how the Hundred Knight needs a depleting resource called "gigacalories" to seemingly do anything in the world, including stay alive.

The Witch and the Hundred Knight is set to take over Europe when it arrives on March 21, before spreading its rule to North America on March 25.

Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day, the video game finale in Short Peace, a collection of anime films by Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo, will reach fans in North America, Europe and Australasia this spring. While the associated press release does not note an American release, Bandai Namco's release schedule does. Longest Day is in development by Tokyo Jungle creator Crispys, and it's written and directed by Goichi "Suda51" Suda.

Longest Day follows Ranko through her days as a high school student and her nights as an assassin. Though it will feature anime scenes, it will play like a 2D action platformer, with players dodging obstacles as they run from larger enemies on the left side of the screen.

We made it to the weekend! Let’s celebrate by reminiscing about all the cool stuff that happened over the past few days.

Bethesda stopped by to answer some questions about The Elder Scrolls Online, PS4′s upcoming Tamriel-based MMO (check out its slick Imperial Edition, too). And speaking of MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV is getting a rather desirable Collector’s Edition on PS4.

Sid and Ryan got to play Dark Souls II and a slew of other upcoming Bandai Namco games, respectively —- color me interested in the new JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fighter.

Sucker Punch showed us what their world-building tools look like, and how they’re using them to build their interpretation of Seattle in inFAMOUS Second Son. Their buddy Sly Cooper is getting a CG animated film, too. Watch the trailer for that one here.

Finally, our friends down in Santa Monica are moving to a new HQ, because there’s just too much talent there to be contained by their current digs.

I’ve been neck-deep in Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition this week, but I’ve been taking short breaks to try and maintain some of my high scores in OlliOlli. I also booted up Minecraft on my PS3 a few days ago… but I managed to tear myself away before I got completely sucked in.

Next week sees PS3 owners get their first taste of free-to-play Ace Combat when Infinity enters a week-long open beta, starting on February 4. Common sense (perhaps misguided) would suggest there won't be any microtransactions in the beta, and Namco does say it's "completely free." But the beta may yet clear up any cloudiness over that particular issue - we'll find out either way next week.

Namco's billing the online co-op as the main mode in Ace Combat Infinity, but the beta does feature solo missions from the game's story campaign. There's also a mode for two teams of up to four pilots in total, and Gordon Freeman's long-lost twin brother, Commander Glenn "Goodfellow" Freeman is looking forward to seeing you try it. As for the game proper, it's still circling the release date runway with a 2014 window.

Naughty Dog's first and only story DLC for IGN's GOTY is ready for release.

Wales Interactive offers an answer to one of the oldest questions to ever boggle mankind's mind: What happens when we die? In the futuristic, simplistic, sci-fi world of Master Reboot, a person buys an island in the Soul Cloud, and when he dies the data of his consciousness and memories are transported to the cloud.

"The game starts with you being uploaded to the Soul Cloud, but something has gone wrong and you wake up on a beach not knowing who or where you are," Wales Interactive Assistant Community Manager David Banner writes. "It's up to you to explore, solve puzzles and try to piece together your life and death. With Master Reboot, we wanted to invoke an uneasiness for the player, a haunting quality as you journeyed through the game. There are certain levels where you catch glimpses of things: shadows, movement out of the corner of your eye, and there are always undertones of something not quite being right."

Master Reboot is heading to PS3 in February, after launching on Steam in October. It's horror in a freaky neon world, with simple 3D graphics and ... a Weeping Angel? Seriously, watch that video closely. And don't blink.

I’m David Banner (not the HULK… don’t make me angry!), Managing Director and co-founder of Wales Interactive and I’ve been making video games professionally since 1995.

Wales Interactive is a BAFTA Cymru award-winning indie developer and publisher which I co-founded back in 2012 with my friend and colleague Richard Pring, Technical Director. Our team has grown to 14 strong and we are Wales’s biggest game developer and publisher. We even have a display dedicated to us at Cardiff Wales Airport! We are passionate about games and our aim is to create original titles that entertain the world as well as put Wales on the video games map.

We started out primarily as an app developer, but have now made the leap to console development and we’re very excited about next month’s release of our first PS3 title.

Our first PlayStation title, Master Reboot, is a haunting first person sci-fi adventure game. In the not too distant future humankind has created the Soul Cloud, a giant server that holds the data of your soul and memories when you die. The Soul Cloud is filled with floating islands, each island looks like a town; village or city filled with rooms, skyscrapers and houses that hold people’s memories.

To house your Soul, a family member (or yourself before you die) purchases an island on the Soul Cloud where the server will generate rooms, houses or skyscrapers that hold each and every memory from the deceased’s past, or of memories of their choosing. With Master Reboot we wanted to invoke an uneasiness for the player; a haunting quality as you journeyed through the game. I think ‘less is more’ in our game and we’ve taken the horror genre in different direction and steered away from blood, guts and violence. I can honestly say there is nothing quite like Master Reboot out there – it’s definitely a game that needs to be experienced.

We deliberately tried to make something visually striking and that, combined with the music, gives a beautiful, haunting quality to the game. We wanted to create a look that would really stand out from the crowd and give us as the developers an identity and think we have achieved that with this game.

It’s great to receive critical acclaim and it’s rewarding for the team to get positive recognition for trying something a bit different from the norm. It’s been described as “A gorgeous indie horror” by the folks at PC Gamer, “A breath of fresh, creepy air” by RockPaperShotgun, and “freakishly cool” by Kotaku.

Hi there! This is Alexey Menshikov, CEO of Ukraine-based Beatshapers. I’m excited finally back to PlayStation.Blog and announce our new project – Ready to Run.

In case you’re not familiar with Beatshapers, we’re a small developer and digital publisher from Kiev, Ukraine. To date, we’ve published 19 games on PlayStation Store. The most significant are BreakQuest series (minis), StarDrone Extreme (PS Vita), Jetpack Joyride (minis) and Furmins (PS Vita, made together with Housemarque).

Ready to Run is a furious RC car racing game in a unique retro-futuristic setting, and it’s actually planned as a franchise, with the first title coming exclusively to PS4.

Here are a few of Ready to Run’s features:

• Highly responsive, arcade-style RC racing physics
• 15+ futuristic radio-control cars with various designs
• Single city environment featuring endless track configurations for different race modes
• Real-time and asynchronous multiplayer modes

We’ve always been fans of RC racing games, and it seems now’s the time for a new title on PlayStation Store. We are planning to launch Ready to Run on PS4 in Q2 2013.
