White Knight Chronicles II is the sequel to White Knight Chronicles: International Edition, a unique role-playing game that combines an expansive story mode with strong multiplayer elements. Created by LEVEL-5, the acclaimed RPG developer of Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII, White Knight Chronicles II offers a new chapter in the epic fantasy RPG and even includes a remastered version of the original game as a bonus!

The tale continues one year after the events of White Knight Chronicles: International Edition. Leonard, the pactmaker of the White Knight, and his team are the last hope to save the world from the Yshrenian Empire, which has set its eyes on dominating the three kingdoms of Balandor, Foria, and Greede. While the first game mostly focused on the love story, White Knight Chronicles II features a grander vision that unravels the truth behind the Incorruptus through 10,000 years of history, culminating in a true finale to the epic saga that may leave you touched by its conclusion.

The extensive multiplayer component enables you to tackle unique online quests with up to six players. The extensive Georama feature also returns, enabling you to build your own town where you can unlock materials to create powerful items to use during your adventures. Some materials can be collected only from the Georama and will give you an advantage in the story mode.

White Knight Chronicles II boasts various improvements based on user feedback regarding the original game. The battle system has improved dramatically over the original, with enhancements including new skills and spells that make combat more strategic, as well as a faster Action Gauge for speedier battles. You can also earn AC (Action Chips), used for transformation and combos, much more easily in White Knight Chronicles II. A new Auto-run feature helps you search a vaster area of maps. Finally, for the first time, you will also be able to create and upgrade a unique Incorruptus for your player avatar.

The North American version will include a fully localized version of the Japanese game with additional on-disc quests that were originally released as downloadable quests in Japan in January 2011. In our North American version, players can start from White Knight Chronicles II without completing the original game — an important point, as the Japanese version requires players to clear White Knight Chronicles: International Edition in order to play the sequel.

We are currently targeting September for a North American release. The gameplay time will easily go over 100 hours. Prepare yourselves, folks!

A member of the Sony PR team recently noted on Twitter that the White Knight Chronicles series has shipped a million units globally. Siliconera points out that the figure covers White Knight Chronicles, White Knight Chronicles EX Edition, White Knight Chronicles: International Edition (US/EU), White Knight Chronicles for PSP and White Knight Chronicles 2.

White Knight Chronicles 2 was recently announced for North America, and both it and the PSP game were announced for Europe. The franchise may not be doing Pokemon numbers, but it's not fading into the night either.

If you're in the market for a new PS3, and you don't mind waiting just a bit, Sony Style has an appealing offer. Through August 21, Sony's retail site is offering one of six first-party games for free with the purchase of a 120GB PS3 Slim. You can choose from Uncharted 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, MAG, Heavy Rain, ModNation Racers or White Knight Chronicles.

Why the wait? The PS3 is currently on backorder at Sony Style, though the offer still seems to be good. So you can order now and actually receive your system later. Think of it as setting your future self up with a wonderful surprise.

[Thanks, Pete!]

Level-5's White Knight Chronicles may have had some issues, but it's not stopping the company from pursuing a sequel, set to be released in Japan next month. It would seem the series is also extending to Sony's PSP, as the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (via Andriasang) reveals a PSP entry set for a 2011 launch.

While White Knight Chronicles 2 wraps up the story of Leonard and the events set in motion by the first game, the PSP game will introduce a new story and characters. "And then, to a new world," the text on the teaser page announces. "White Knight Chronicles New Project. A story of your avatar and new allies, told on the PlayStation Portable, is set to start in 2011."

If you can't wait for the updated (and mandatory) version of White Knight Chronicles that's slated to come packaged with the RPG's upcoming sequel, you might want to act on today's Amazon Gold Box deal. Instead of ponying up $60 for Level 5's giant soldier-centric onus, the online retailer is offering it for $37, which ... well, which seems like an awfully arbitrary price point, doesn't it? Why not $35, or $40? Something round and pleasant, you know?

As with all Gold Box deals, this one has a fairly short half-life, and will be taken down at 2 a.m. EDT, or whenever it sells out -- whichever comes first. Again, considering the game will be bundled with White Knight Chronicles 2, we're betting on the former.

While the first White Knight Chronicles only made its English debut a few months ago, Japan is already preparing for its sequel. It's been a long time since Sony's released media of the upcoming PS3 RPG, but with its July release encroaching, it appears the marketing machine is being oiled up. This new trailer focuses largely on the story and the cinematics for Level-5's sequel, and it highlights characters -- new and old -- for this second adventure.

Even if you can't understand a word they're saying, don't fret -- there's still a lot to appreciate. Free-fall mecha transformations can be understood in any language, right?

You and your trusty White Knight Chronicles monster-slaying team don't have to repeat the same quests over and over again (though you will, simply for the experience and materials). Every Thursday, starting this week through June, Sony will add new quests to Level-5's RPG, visible in the world map, and all downloadable for free.

Each week, a new permanent quest will be available, along with limited-time quests that you can only download for two weeks. And to mark the occasion, Sony is giving away a 12-inch White Knight figurine to one lucky player that logs into one of six quests during a certain time period. See PlayStation Blog for all the details.

The hype for White Knight Chronicles seemed to run out in the long wait between its 2006 announcement and its 2010 North American release. Had it been released closer to the PS3 launch, it might have wowed some gamers with its large enemies and online integration, but the time seems to have elapsed for that as well. Instead of the grand system-selling RPG many expected back then, Level-5's PS3 debut is a fairly standard JRPG with excellent character building options and nothing incredibly special to do with those characters.

Sony made us wait a few years for a North American release of White Knight Chronicles, but it's not waiting at all to give us a chance to spend more money on the game -- the official Sony blog has news that the first DLC for the game will be out ASAP, offering up microtransactions for items to fill out the in-game "Georama" space, as well as a $4.99 "key" that will allow you to completely re-customize your character without having to start the game all over again. Of course, Sony guarantees that "there is PLENTY for you to work with in the game itself," but just in case you want to pay a little more of your hard-earned paycheck, Sony will be happy to take it. And finally, just in time for launch day, it's offered up a brand new trailer. That won't cost you anything but a click on the link below, as it's available to watch after the break. [Via VG247]

Further expanding on LittleBigPlanet's catalog of costumes portraying PS3-exclusive game protagonists, Media Molecule has revealed that the next set of in-game duds will come from White Knight Chronicles on February 25. According to the PlayStation.Blog post announcing the new content, the costume pack will include the garbs of four of the RPG's legendary heroes: The White Knight, Black Knight, Dragon Knight, and ... Leonard. One of these things is significantly less awesome than the others.
