"Freedom of progression." It's a phrase Funcom uses to describe characters creation in The Secret World. They've done away with levels and classes, and hope to reshape the landscape of the MMO genre that's been mired in standards for years. But can it break through the confines of familiarity? EA S...

Yesterday we spoke to The Secret World‘s project lead, Ragnar Tørnquist about the game’s factions, mythologies and more peculiar ideas. Today we get a bit deeper, and dig into the motivations behind it all. Why the recurring themes in Tørnquist’s work? Does he have an agenda? And why does most of gaming not? We have a good argument about the nature of truth, and ask where games are falling short. And then somehow again return to the topic of Ragnar’s death.

Later on today we have the second part of our massive interview with The Secret World lead, Ragnar Tørnquist (first part here). In that one Ragnar and I end up having a bit of a “discussion” about the nature of truth and authorship, as well as ambiguous endings and where gaming needs to go next. In the meantime you can enjoy the latest CGI (cinematic) trailer for The Secret World, which is below. This one is mostly about wee.

The secrets of The Secret World are slowly being revealed, with the latest being a new location for the MMO, the Savage Coast. A place that Stephen King might call home, Solomon Island plays host to abandoned carnivals, dark woods and, of course, a spooky lighthouse. And, uh, whatever that thing is.

After spending some time at Funcom’s Oslo HQ to see The Secret World, I sat down with project lead Ragnar Tørnquist to chat about the game, the process that led up to it, and how it fits in with his philosophy of gaming. In part one of our chat we talk about the game’s origins, find out why we should care about each of the three factions, how Funcom is able to make games that don’t match the trends, some of the more peculiar and esoteric plans for blurring our realities, and finally how the game is going to inevitably lead to Tørnquist’s brutal murder.

Funcom’s The Secret World is five years deep into development, and still some way off. But having spent a couple of days in their Norwegian HQ, I’m reasonably convinced it exists. I mean, it could just be one heck of an elaborate conspiracy. Below is my report on where things are just now, which I’m pleased to report is somewhere genuinely exciting. We also have four exclusive new screenshots, which you’ll only have to click on to enjoy.

Four years ago, it was still reasonable to believe that we were on the verge of some kind of console MMO explosion. That's when Funcom unveiled The Secret World, an MMO in development for PC and Xbox 360 -- the first and last time there's been a definitive statement about the console version of the game to date. (A press release in January described The Secret World as "a next-generation massively multiplayer online game for the PC platform.")

What a surprise, then, to hear creative director Ragnar Tørnquist tell Eurogamer that he's "been very vocal in saying that when -- I guess also if -- we have a console version of The Secret World, it's not going to be exactly the same game." This is the first we've heard of a change in plans, even if we'd presumed that, at best, The Secret World console game had been secretly delayed.

While Tørnquist allowed that he had "a team" working "specifically" on an Xbox 360 version (at least at some point), he noted, "It's not something we're focusing on now. I think it will only happen if The Secret World turns out to be -- as of course it hopefully is -- a huge success. We will want to do things on other platforms; we will want to expand the universe. But it won't be the same game."

"You can still have the same setting; you can still have the same philosophies, the same basic systems," he said of a console version. "But you really need to make a different game. How different that will be, it's hard to say."

As for the PC version, Tørnquist told Eurogamer, "We're at the point where we know when the game is going to be released, but we're not quite ready to tell people yet." It's a secret.

I know about as little about The Secret World as the name of Funcom's next MMO implies. In the five years since its inception, I've only seen a few of the game's playable zones, little actual combat, and have never played it myself. It exists though, and today IGN brings you the latest trailer...
