Separated by a generation, this week's two Rock Band 3 DLC music groups couldn't be more different -- except for when it comes to drunken sing-along-ability, that is. Both Poison and Three Doors Down have that going for them in spades, making each a perfect fit for the world of Rock Band.

'Pac-Man Fever' Makes Rock Band 3 Debut, Renders All Past and Future DLC Irrelevant
screened.com posted by Giant Bomb Jun 23 2011 19:15 GMT

There is no longer any reason to continue buying Rock Band 3 DLC. It's done. Music games are, from this day forth, no longer capable of improving themselves, and thus finished. Harmonix might as well pack up its collection of upcoming master tracks and charting tools and plunge them into a tire fire, because the greatest song ever written has finally made its Rock Band debut.

To any Rock Band Network charters out there, here is your next assignment.

I am, of course, speaking of master songwriting duo Buckner and Garcia's monumental musical achievement, "Pac-Man Fever." Released by Rock Band Network production company Ozone Entertainment, the transcendentally beautiful song comes alongside three of the group's lesser works, including the beautiful lamentation to the plight of the amphibian, "Froggy's Lament," the Asimovian sci-fi epic "Hyperspace," and "Mousetrap," which is presumably about some manner of mousetrap.

Each track costs 160 Microsoft points, or $2. Though RBN songs begin as exclusives on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 players typically get the most popular tracks in following weeks. Considering this song seems poised to break every download record Microsoft has ever tracked, it should be on the PS3 in no time.

Many have dismissed "Pac-Man Fever" as a mere novelty song derived from Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" in a cynical ploy to capitalize on the booming arcade movement of the early 1980s. What those tone-deaf dilettantes fail to realize is that "Pac-Man Fever" is the greatest song ever written. What's that? Want proof? Such is the demand of an uneducated philistine. That's like asking for proof of the Mona Lisa's status as one of the world's greatest works of at, or Ghostbusters' reign as the greatest movie ever made. It is not to be challenged. It is simply understood.

For anyone interested in acquiring some "Pac-Man Fever"-related wares, be sure to keep an eye out on our various Twitter accounts and the Giant Bomb site. We might have a few goodies to give away in the relatively near future.

Oh, also released this week to the Rock Band 3 music store was some other crap that isn't "Pac-Man Fever." I think there were some Puddle of Mudd songs. Whatever. Let's all listen to "Pac-Man Fever" together and just pretend other music doesn't exist.

Harmonix on the state of post-MTV Rock Band DLC
gameinformer.com posted by Joystiq May 04 2011 23:20 GMT

In a new interview with Game Informer, Chris Rigopulos, VP of strategy and business development at Harmonix, addresses the state of downloadable content for Rock Band now that the studio is no longer under MTV. Rigopulos said that Harmonix has "effectively severed all ties with MTV, and all proceeds from Rock Band belong to Harmonix."

He explained that music selection for the Rock Band series had been a "collaborative effort between Harmonix and MTV," noting that most of the downloadable tracks we've seen this year were selected before Harmonix was sold by Viacom (last year). This month's downloadable tracks, said Rigopulos, will be the "first glimpse" at the music the company has secured without MTV. Rigopulos doesn't expect any "dramatic changes" to the music selection process, though he cheekily added, "I doubt you will see any more SpongeBob SquarePants packs."

Rigopulous also discussed the overall success of Rock Band's DLC enterprise, noting that the series recently surpassed 100 million song downloads.

In an interview with Game Informer, Harmonix's Chris Rigopulos revealed the slate of downloadable content in store for Rock Band this month. Tracks from the Foo Fighters new album Wasting Light will be released next Tuesday, May 10, alongside some new Pro Guitar and Bass upgrades to older Rock Band tracks. Later this month, add-on songs will coincide with Lady Gaga's new album, Born This Way, as well as with the re-release of two "legendary" Ozzy Osbourne albums, Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz.
Rigopulos also disclosed that Peter Frampton's classic "Do You Feel Like We Do," from the live album Frampton Comes Alive (pictured), will also be released this month. In other words, it will totally sound like your plastic guitar is talking.
Don't Expect Rock Band 4 Anytime Soon

You'll keep rockin' on the same disc...for now. The soft commercial response to Rock Band 3 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock prompted MTV Games to sell Harmonix and get out of games and Activision to send Guitar Hero into at least temporary retirement. Harmonix has no plans to ditch music video games, however, and in an far-reaching interview with Game Informer today, VP of strategy and business development Chris Rigopulos talked the future.

Harmonix has already promised an announcement next month at E3 (another Dance Central, easily the most well received Kinect launch title, seems likely), but Rigopulos threw cold water on speculation we'd be seeing Rock Band 4.

"We’re not planning a Rock Band 4 disc release in 2011," he said. "Rock Band 3 is a big game with lots of available music content and lots of new goals and challenges. We want to give our fans the time to explore that fully. But rest assured that Harmonix is still developing new ideas and concepts to advance the Rock Band franchise, and we look forward to sharing those when the time is right."

There's wiggle room there, of course, by specifically saying "disc release." Harmonix could implement new features into Rock Band 3 through a significant patch, but by all accounts, folks are happy keyboard tappin' on Rock Band 3. Having recently reduced the price to $19.99, there's now a very small barrier to entry.
