Limbo came out for PC yesterday, available via Steam for £7. Having never played the 360 version (despite paying for it – I’m an idiot) I’ve played it through for the first time and am ready to tell you just exactly Wot it is that I Think.

Right, well we’ll have to get to writing about that very soon, eh? Apologies for the supashort post: just thought you should know, in case you didn’t have evening plans (or morning plans. Or whatever o’clock it is near you plans). The wildly-acclaimed XBLA tale of horror, puzzles, platforming and silhouettes is out right now on PC at last, via Steam. It’ll cost you £6.99 or $9.99, and if you’re unsure we’ll hopefully be telling you what we think very soon.

Trailer below, in case you’re unfamiliar with its sombre, haunting, unsettling work, plus you can read our recent interview with the devs here.(more…)

Video games are an art form made up of visuals, sound, and a mysterious little something we call gameplay. Limbo is the perfect example of these three crafts working together in harmony to create something astounding. With no text, no dialogue, and no explanation, it manages to communicate circumstance and causality to the player more simply than most games. This black-and-white 2D puzzle platformer is one of the best games you'll play this year on any platform...

Playdead's quiet, beautiful downloadable title Limbo has finally made the voyage to PlayStation Network, heading up an odd grab-bag of a week's worth of releases. For instance, the decidedly un-quiet Burnout Paradise has had its DLC offerings marked down for the summer, while the Fallout: New Vegas expansion Old World Blues has reared its ugly, roboscorpion-covered head. Check out all the releases below!

Give in to Limbo with this week's PSN update. One of the best games of 2010, Limbo is finally available on PSN for $15. PS Plus members can pick it up for $12.

Another sweet deal is all of Borderlands (including DLC) for $20, $15 for PS Plus members. One of the best games of 2009, Borderlands melded an open-world FPS with Diablo-style loot drops for an addictive combination. Explore past the break for all the details on this week's update.

Did you hear? After having been stuck in an undetermined state for a long time, Limbo is now PC-bound, releasing via Steam on August 2nd. I caught up with Dino Patti, CEO & Co-founder of Playdead, to ask him some questions about it. He was kind enough answer them all, so I thought I’d share his responses with you: (more…)

The Limbo folks have sent word that the spooky silhouetted platformer Limbo (one of the prettiest side-scrollers on the playboxes) will be turning up on Steam on August 2nd. That’s about it really, but we’ll probably WIT it or something before it hits.

Hey look, here comes a video! It’s actually one of my favourite trailers ever. Grim.(more…)

Playdead is celebrating Limbo's first birthday by giving all of us a present -- a PSN release date for the gruesome yet gorgeous indie darling.

Limbo will be creepy-crawling onto PSN July 19 in the United States, July 20 in Europe and at a to-be-announced date in Japan. The Limbo soundtrack, which would be great for overnight, solo camping trips in the middle of Dead Man's Woods, will be released Monday, July 11, due to popular demand. Playdead's Dino Patti finished his announcement on the PlayStation Blog with the promise (or threat) of a "little extra secret we have in store for you..."

Update: Limbo will be launching on Steam worldwide August 2, apparently with the same dirty little secret coming for PSN.

It has been one year since LIMBO originally launched, and that year has been an incredible time for everyone at Playdead. We’ve gotten feedback from many people around the world, and it’s been amazing to hear about the experiences people have had with the game.

So we are happy, on the mark of LIMBO’s birthday, to bring the experience further and share it with even more people. We will be releasing the game on the PS3 through the PlayStation Network on the following dates:

  • US – July 19th
  • Europe – July 20th
  • Japan/Asia – to be announced soon

Since we have gotten a lot of requests for the LIMBO Soundtrack, we are also making that available starting this Monday, July 11th on iTunes. If you are interested in more infrequent updates about the game, please feel free to sign up for the newsletter on our website www.limbogame.org. So, with less than two weeks to wait to get LIMBO on PSN, we hope everyone will enjoy the game and the little extra secret we have in store for you…

We look forward hearing what you think!
Regards,
@DinoPatti

It seems the "Games as Art" debate is over, as New York City's Museum of Modern Art is co-hosting a game-centric event later this month with haute gaming mag Kill Screen. Titled "Arcade," the one-night soiree on July 27 features several great indie games (Bit.Trip Beat, Canabalt, Limbo, and "a new motion-based Kinect project" from ex-Harmonix dudes Ryan Challinor and Matt Boch, as seen here). The games will be playable throughout various parts of the museum, including the MoMA's gorgeous sculpture garden. That's where we'll be hanging out, in case that wasn't clear.

You may be wondering how the folks at Kill Screen finagled a gaming night at one of the world's most famous art museums, and we were too. It turns out that the event is part of MoMA's "Talk to Me" exhibit, which explores "the communication between people and objects." Video games seem like a perfect fit, no?

If the incredible location and selection of great games weren't enough to convince you, tickets are just $16 in advance and $20 at the door, which entitles you to "an exclusive viewing, a cocktail reception, a tote bag," as well as the aforementioned opportunity to play games at the MoMA. We'll also be there in our sharpest outfit handing out exaggerated high fives, so keep an eye out!

Update: Rather than write a whole other story, figured I'd just update this one. Sony's PlayStation Facebook page has confirmed that a PSN port of Limbo will be coming this July, and Playdead co-founder Dino Patti confirmed elsewhere that the team is also working on a PC version to be released on Steam. Both ports are being worked on by the Playdead team internally.

Here's to more people being able to experience horrifying child death (and really excellent gameplay)!

Into a Limbo large and broad, PlayStation 3 owners may soon be headed.

Games don't get much more metal than Limbo.

Once deemed an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive by the developers themselves, Danish studio Playdead's award-winning puzzle-platformer Limbo appears to be set for a release on additional platforms in the foreseeable future, with the Korean ratings board having just rated a PSN version of the title.

This would seem to back up some earlier rumors that the game may no longer be an Xbox 360 exclusive by various NeoGAF users, who dug up a hidden trailer for the game on Steam. While no word of a PC version has leaked out since this trailer popped up, the addition of today's PSN rating seems to suggest that the exclusivity for the title has come to an end.

Playdead has also reportedly been working on a new title following the success of Limbo's original release. The studio has yet to officially announce what the game is, but previously stated that it was an all-new IP that fans of Limbo would nonetheless feel right at home with it.

Limbo garnered a five-star rating from our own Brad Shoemaker, and made a number of our personal top 10 lists last year (including the very tippy top of mine). Any opportunity that exists to get more people to play this hauntingly beautiful, darkly clever little game can't be viewed as anything but a good thing.

Shortly before last summer's release of Limbo - that year's top Xbox Live Summer of Arcade title "by a long stretch" - the ESRB erroneously listed the PlayStation 3 and PC platforms in addition to the Xbox 360. Developer Playdead's Dino Patti told us, "We are only launching the title on XBLA. You won't see a PS3 or PC version this time around, sorry."

However, like other Summer of Arcade indie exclusives before it including Braid and Castle Crashers, Limbo could make an appearance on Sony's platform after a period of exclusivity ... like, say, a year or so. The Korean Game Ratings Board has a listing for Limbo filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Korea. It so happens that the GRB has a pretty strong track record, outing Xbox Live Arcade titles like Fruit Ninja Kinect and Sega Rally Online Arcade. Before you get your hopes up, we've reached out to Playdead for a comment on the listing.

Limbo and Xbox Indie title Inertia! have won the second annual Indie Game Challenge at DICE. Sponsored by The Guildhall at SMU, GameStop and the AIAS, the winners will each receive $100,000 and an EEDAR DesignMetrics title research assessment valued at $15,000.

Limbo, which we felt was one of the best games of 2010, took the grand prize in the "professional" category, along with another prize of $2,500 for achievement in art direction

Inertia!, available through Xbox Live Indies for $1, won in the "non-professional" category and also took awards for technical achievement, achievement in gameplay and "gamer's choice," for a total of an extra $15,000 in prize money. The game was created by Team Hermes, an eight person team of now-graduated students from The Guildhall at Southern Methodist University. Three members of the team, Evan Skarin, Michelle Hayden and Brandon Stephens, have started Inertia Studios, while the rest have already taken jobs at established studios.

To check out all the talented nominees, head on over to the Indie Game Challenge site and watch the videos.

It's almost time once again for the industry's premier awards show that doesn't feature regular appearances by Jersey Shore cast members: the 11th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. The event's organizers have released the mercifully Mountain Dew-based-category-free list of nominees, which includes a number of potential merits for Limbo, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Check out the full list of nominees after the jump and discuss your favorites in the comments! (Oh, that's your pick for Best Visual Arts? Well, we can't say we agree with you, there.)

Act before the strike of midnight tonight, and you'll be able to get a copy of Limbo for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) -- a 33% discount from its original price. Nothing says "happy new year" like running away from a menacing giant spider, while having a slug eating away at your brains.

We'd like to think it's in celebration of its esteemed position on the Joystiq Top 10 of 2010 list, but apparently it's just part of Microsoft's "Countdown to 2011" promotion. That means in addition to Limbo, you can download the Kick-Ass movie for 29% off. Like peanut butter and pickles, this pairing makes so much sense.

Much like its sparsely populated namesake, Limbo is a game defined by what isn't there.

There's no color, no speech, no real prompting to speak of ... heck, the game doesn't even use that many buttons. It asks that you bring something of yourself to the experience, that you supply your own metaphorical color, ensuring that your journey through the bitter, monochrome world will be intensely personal.

In an industry that so often chokes itself with overabundance, Limbo separated itself from the pack by saying little, yet speaking volumes.

We caught up with Limbo creators Playdead at the Indiecade festival in Culver City, California this weekend, and while CEO Dino Patti confirmed once again that the best-selling XBLA game is "exclusive for life" to Microsoft's platform, we may see the next Playdead title branching out. Patti says the company is working on "a new IP," and that Limbo fans will enjoy it. "I can't tell much, but I can tell you that if you liked Limbo, it'll definitely be for you," he said. "The gameplay style you'll really like. You'll feel it's the same team who made it, but everything will be changed."

The team "used a lot of time and a lot of money" getting Limbo out, and going with Microsoft exclusively was a way to hedge their bets and "get the money back," Patti said. "And it came out fine, because we got our money back, which was really cool." But for this new IP, admittedly still a long ways off, Patti said that "we are open for everything. To be honest, we want as many people to play our games as possible. If we end up going exclusive, we may do it for various reasons, but we just want as many people to play the game as possible."

Last night's IndieCade 2010 awards ceremony recognized some of the best independently-developed games released over the past year, as well as Tim Schafer, who was not released over the past year. The full list of winners can be found after the jump.

You're probably familiar with some of them, provided your gaming tastes wander off the beaten path -- there's Playdead's haunting platformer Limbo, Ian Bogost's Atari 2600 gem A Slow Year, and Steph Thirion iPhone title Faraway, which won something called the "Sublime Experience Award." We're sure the other honors are just as prestigious, but that's the best name for an award we've ever heard.
