It's FPS 101: The frag and clear. Look up, chuck a grenade, then rush towards its destination. Once there, mop up any targets that happened to be standing nearby. It's generally a sound Black Ops strategy -- that is unless you happen to be the target standing nearby, of course.

Tired of all that silly "paying" for new Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer maps? We know, we know -- money is so 2010. Good thing for you, then, that Treyarch announced plans this week (via Twitter) to officially release the promised mod tools for Black Ops sometime this May.

The tools will, of course, only end up on the PC version of Blops, though considering that they never ended up in any version of Modern Warfare 2, we're looking at this as a pretty major improvement. Also, now we can finally live out that dream of recreating Super Mario Bros. stage 1-1 in Call of Duty. Wait ... what?!

Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin has let slip that their PC team are aiming – as previously promised – to release mod tools for the blockbusting man shooter in May. It’ll be interesting to see how busy the mod community for this becomes. I can see multiplayer maps being a fairly popular target, but general tweaky gameplay type mods? What would the motivation be? Anyone enough of Black Ops player to see where obvious modding routes might lie?

A PC mod toolkit for Call of Duty: Black Ops should release next month, according to this Treyarch developer (and retweeted by community manager Josh Olin.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 disappointed many when it did not release mod tools. Treyarch promised last year that Black Ops would bring them back. More »

The Black Ops map pack, Escalation, has now been officially confirmed by Activision. It’ll feature five new maps, of which four are multiplayer maps and one if a zombie shooter thing.

…battle it out in Hotel, on the roof of a Cuban luxury hotel and casino against the vivid backdrop of old Havana; Convoy delivers intense, close-quarters combat at the scene of an ambushed US military convoy; Zoo takes you on a wild ride in an abandoned Soviet Russian Zoo, with danger at every turn; Stockpile pits players in a remote Russian farm town housing secret WMD facilities.

No price or PC date, however. BigDownload reckon it’ll be in June, but I think that’s just speculation.

Retailer GAME Australia leaked this announcement, but now the information within the leak is official: a new Call of Duty: Black Ops map pack called “Escalation” is coming, and its hitting this May 3 on Xbox Live Marketplace. Escalation will usher in a total of four new competitive maps and a fresh zombie
(wait, is "fresh zombie" an oxymoron?) mode map that will come loaded with a nice perk for fans: a cast of “all-new playable characters” according to Xbox Live guru and mouthpiece Major Nelson.

So, where will this pack thrust you and your fellow BLOPers? “Zoo” will take you to the grounds of an abandoned Russian zoo, “Hotel” will keep the killin’ classy on the rooftop of a Cuban luxury hotel, while “Convoy” will test your close-quarters mettle on the grounds of an ambushed US convoy, and “Stockpile” will have you WMD facility-hopping in a secret Russian farm town.

Remember that whole Call of Duty: Black Ops report a week ago that thoroughly detailed an upcoming DLC pack named "Escalation?" Turns out that was totally spot-on -- surprise!! -- and Black Ops multiplayer will be escalating on May 3 with the injection of five new maps: convoy, zoo, stockpile, hotel, and an unnamed Zombies mode map.

Still unknown about the just revealed pack? The price, though we imagine it'll mirror past Call of Duty DLC packs and cost a cool $15. Either way, we'll find out soon enough, as the pack drops in just three short weeks for Xbox 360 players and on PS3 at some point after, per Microsoft's exclusivity agreement.

For centuries, man has been predicting the end of the world as we know it. The Mayans, Nostradamus, R.E.M. they've all been singing the same tune. What none of them managed to predict however, was that the world would be destroyed by Call of Duty. Well, the world of video games, at least...

Whoops! It seems that Call of Duty: Black Ops will get a second DLC pack on May 3, according to a flyer that allegedly popped up on GAME's Australian retail site (since pulled, but captured by VG247). The flyer advertises five seemingly distinct maps -- a zoo, a hotel, a convoy, a stockpile, and a new locale for the co-op Zombie Mode -- but doesn't list a price.

As per Activision and Microsoft's timed exclusivity agreement, the date only applies to Xbox Live for now. Activision couldn't be reached for comment as of publishing, but we'll update this story as soon as we get more information.

While you lot have made absolutely no secret of your contempt for latter-day Call of Duty games, as I understand it they’re pretty big business on PC nonetheless. Despite others’ best, sneery comment-based efforts, people still buy them. So there will be a large and enthuastic audience for the news that DLC map pack First Strike has been given a PC release date, having already been available on 360 for some time. You may well not be that enthusiastic audience, but I’m going to tell you anyway – knowing what the biggest, most aloof publisher is up to in terms of PC gaming is always useful. (more…)

At this point it's hard to call this Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC "First Strike" with a straight face (since it first struck on Xbox a month ago, and then on PS3 on March 3), but ironic name or not, it's finally coming to PC on March 25, according to a tweeted announcement by Treyarch's Josh Olin.

As Olin mentions in the tweet, you can pre-purchase the DLC right now through Steam. Though you don't strictly need to secure your copy of a digital-only product ahead of time, since there's no concern about scarcity, you do save $1.50 by doing so.

This Call of Duty: Black Ops thing appears to be taking off. You might remember the billionaire game from its position at the top of the NPD software chart tonight, a position it's held since its November release.

In a statement released this evening, NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that in that short time, Black Ops has already surpassed Wii Play as the best-selling game in history. Like, ever. Activision hasn't released specific US life-to-date sales numbers, but it sold 5.6 million copies in the UK and US on day one. And as of October, Nintendo claimed sales of around 13 million Wii Plays.

So, more than that.
