Listen: the first thing you need to know about the music in the newest Rayman game is that it's got some kickass virtuoso kazoo playing. More »
The AP has unleashed its list of top ten games this year and ... it's a pretty competent list. Not only did Bastion make the cut, but so did Rayman Origins and, as you may have guessed from the headline to this very post, Portal 2.
Valve's game took top honors, followed by Skyrim and then Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Rounding out the top five are Bastion and Rocksteady's sequel, Batman: Arkham City. In a year so full of great games, we envy AP's finished list -- for us, the work of choosing our favorite games of 2011 is only about to begin.
I'm going to lay all my cards on the table with this one and simply state that, to me, Rayman Origins stands as one of the year's most important games. Between the beautiful, hand-drawn graphics, razor sharp controls and unique fantasy setting, the game manages to deliver an experience so refined, it practically reignited my passion for platforming. This title is a showcase for what games can be: unique, artistic and bucking the trends of the day...
...this is a solid title that must be experienced. If you don't mind a few disembodied handfuls of rage-inducing difficulty or the constant, sanity-warping slapstick, you'll have a blast, especially if you invite some friends to slap around.

In a lengthy interview published today on Gamasutra, Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel confesses that although he likes The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, he doesn't care for playing Miyamoto's Super Mario games. From the interview: More »
Rayman Origins, the newest game from creator Michel Ancel, is often compared to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In our E3 preview, we called it "the best Nintendo game Nintendo will never make" and said that NSMB was "the largest inspiration for Rayman Origins' frantic multiplayer platforming action." But in a new interview with Gamasutra, Ancel calls himself "very different from Miyamoto" and explains why his philosophy is completely different than the Mario designer's...

Apparently, the powers-that-be at Ubisoft know that the visual splendor of their latest gorgeously rendered platformer can be straight-up confusing. That's the only raison d'etre I can figure behind the video above. More »
A certain Italian plumber should watch his back - Rayman Origins is as good as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and not far off from approaching the quality of some of his finest 2D adventures. This is a tightly designed yet grandiose platformer that is stuffed full of wide smile-inducing joy. While limited in terms of multiplayer options and potentially too difficult for some of its intended audience, Rayman Origins is nonetheless one of this year's best games on Wii, and a blueprint for 2D jumpathons in the 21st century.
Sometimes exhilarating, sometimes frustrating but rarely boring, Rayman Origins is a fantastic game for seasoned fans of platformers, particularly those who have blitzed Mario's recent adventures and those who reckon game developers lost their "imagination" balls somewhere in the 90's.
Given the abundance of violent, mature titles that are hitting the market this holiday season, Rayman: Origins is a great title that will appeal to gamers of all ages and skill levels.
I adored my experience playing Rayman Origins and I'm certain that anybody with a love for 2D platform games will feel the same. It stands tall in the field as being one of the best of its kind in this console generation and supplies ample hope that there's not only plenty of life still in that genre, but in Rayman as a franchise.
If you only know about Rayman from his affiliation with the now-ubiquitous Rabbids, that probably wasn’t the best introduction. Rayman Origins is the proper way to catch up with the character, who finally has a game that puts him squarely in the majors.
Regardless of how you choose to play Rayman Origins, the important thing is that it should be played. Characters speak in Pig Latin. Upon discovering each secret area, an unseen audience expresses my unspoken thoughts, collectively cooing, "oooh!" The underwater sections have appropriately burbly background vocals. I couldn't possibly enumerate them all, but every detail, every nuance is positively dripping with goofy, heart-swelling joy.
...it's easy to see higher production values here. We don't get many big ambitious 2D platformers these days, and above all else, I'm happy to see Ubisoft didn't waste the opportunity.
