#mariokart Mario's debut on the 3DS was, appropriately, called Super Mario 3D Land. And never in the series 19-year history has the game had a numbered sequel (well, technically there's Mario Kart 64, but it was not the 64th game in the series.) So why is the franchise's 3DS version, due out in North America next week, called Mario Kart 7 and not, say, Mario Kart 3D? More »

Did you know that being in first place actually changes up the soundtrack? You'll get an extra layer to the music that lets you enjoy the tune in a different way. Now you have a bit more incentive to stay in first as long as possible!

We're just about two weeks away from the release of Mario Kart 7 now, and as the game has raced closer and closer to store shelves Nintendo's been regularly spilling the details on its content. (In fact, we have it in the IGN offices and are working away on our review!) During September's 3DS pre...

N64 Luigi Raceway

- The hot air balloon with the item box attached is now much easier to get to, as it bops just above the race-track instead of floating way up then down. However, the item box is now a regular one and no longer is guaranteed to yield a Blue Shell.

- During the long turn, you can now drive-up onto the bordering walls to access some speed boosts.

Normally, Mario's Kart is just a bit of virtual video game magic, confined to a world where turtle shells fly and banana peels litter racetracks. But Nintendo has joined forces with auto shop West Coast Customs to produce two real life Mario Karts, currently on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Both Mario's main ride, above, and Luigi's Bumble V kart were made, and both are equipped with front-wheel drive, 18-inch wheels in the back, and a propeller addon for traveling through water.

Unfortunately, that propeller doesn't really work underwater (so says the press release after the break), but the karts really do move. And their construction will be spotlighted in an upcoming episode of West Coast Customs' reality TV show. You can see more shots of the karts over on the company's site (including one of Reggie Fils-Aime himself driving), and the machines themselves are on display this week in Los Angeles.

- online communities let you create custom communities with specific play parameters
- you can share these communities with others
- start with a list of the different items, characters and kart parts to choose what you want
- example: you can have a green shell only race or a Luigi only race or a standard kart frame race
- cannot specify more than one at a time
- Balloon Battles has you trying to pop as many of your opponents' balloons as possible within a time limit
- coin battles are timed as well
- six levels to choose from in battle mode
- Battle Course 1 from Mario Kart Super Circuit, Big Donut from Mario Kart 64 and Palm Shore from Mario Kart DS return
- Honeybee Hive, Sherbet Rink and WuHu Town are the new maps
- Mirror Flip races

Mario Kart has always been one of Nintendo's most multiplayer-focused franchises. While having a system with multiple controller slots was enough to facilitate this back in the day, today things have shifted heavily toward online. Luckily, the series that pioneered the kart racing genre isn't one to be left in the dust, as Mario Kart 7 comes packed with tons of multiplayer options to give you plenty of ways to challenge friends and strangers...
