We knew that we'd have our chance to kick some zombies in their stupid, three-dimensional faces sometime this summer -- but without anything more specific than that, it's proven difficult to pencil any undead annihilation into our day planners. Fortunately, Capcom has firmed up the summer launch window for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D into something more specific. How specific? How about June 28, 2011, at like, midnight or something. That specific enough for you?

You can find a trailer announcing the release date posted after the jump. We found it scary, but mostly because we're pretty terrified by acts of violence against journalists. And, you know, decapitation.

Capcom's juggernaut, the Resident Evil series, always makes it a point to blast its way onto the hottest new systems, and the Nintendo 3DS is no exception. Not to be confused with Resident Evil: Revelations, which is a completely new entry bearing similarities to the core titles in the survival horror franchise, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a completely different experience. Confused? Worry not-- we've got all the details you need right here...

In the words of Wesker himself, nobody could have ever predicted "it" would spread so fast. We assume he's referring to the Resident Evil franchise, which will see five (five) different releases this year. See footage of them all in the Resident Evil 15th anniversary trailer after the break.

One thing to note: Both Code: Veronica X HD and Resident Evil 4 HD are promoted with the Xbox Live "Games on Demand" logo beneath their titles (as opposed to the Xbox Live Arcade logo). It's possible that Capcom is opting to distribute the titles under the Games on Demand platform in North America (where they will be download-only) in order to bypass the 2GB size limit placed on XBLA titles. We've contacted Capcom for clarification.

Along with the announcement of Resident Evil: Revival Selection, the latest Famitsu reportedly has some smaller-scale Resident Evil news as well. According to leaks from the magazine, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will be released in Japan on June 2. The Famitsu article also introduces Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine as playable characters, with Jill as a more "balanced" character, and Wesker more skilled with heavy weapons.

The last we'd heard about any release date was Capcom's announcement during the January 19 3DS event of a "summer" release in North America. If it's hitting Japan in June, it seems to be on track to make that summer date here.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D isn't a game -- it's fan service. You see, there are two types of Resident Evil fans: casual ones that have fun playing a "survival horror" game and the hardcore buffs that really, really dig its absurd, kitschy, over-the-top action. I'm part of the latter group, meaning The Mercenaries 3D seems like a love letter to me.

However: If you're not part of that latter group, you'll quickly find yourself disinterested in what The Mercenaries has to offer. There's a reason why the original "The Mercenaries" game mode was tucked away as a bonus in the last two console RE offerings. Where are the puzzles? Scripted events? Where is the story? These are all features that have been severed, packaged into Resident Evil: Revelations (another 3DS game, due at a later date).

While some will rightfully take offense at Capcom's obvious "double dipping," it's hard to deny the sheer fun of knifing "zombies" in the knees and spin-kicking them to increase your score multiplier. The Mercenaries is meant for those gamers that find the core gameplay of Resident Evil fun and want to memorize maps in order to get the highest score. It's meant for the kind of player that thinks seeing HUNK fight RE5's Executioner while roaming a castle from RE4 justifies a purchase. By merging characters, enemies and levels from both RE4 and RE5, The Mercenaries 3D has effectively become the closest thing to a "Smash Bros." the Resident Evil universe has.

Capcom has revealed a tiny morsel of information regarding the launch window of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Alas, the game will miss the 3DS's March 27 launch date, forcing players to wait until this summer to satisfy their zombie, ganado and Majini slaying urges.

We know, it hurts. But hey, at least Capcom had the decency to release some new screens and a trailer. Check out the screens in the gallery below and find the trailer after the break.
