After PC, PS3 and Vita players have been enjoying the delightfully campy Retro City Rampage for months, Xbox players can finally see what all the hubbub is about. The 2D, pixelated open-world crime game is now available on Xbox Live Arcade, offering up more video game and pop culture references from the last three decades than you can shake a shotgun at.

As our review notes, if you've been playing video games for a long time, you're bound to get a kick out of it. You can snag it for $10.

Joystiq is revealing its 10 favorite games of 2012 throughout the week. Keep reading for more top selections and every writer's personal, impassioned picks in Best of the Rest roundups. Borderlands 2
The first Borderlands quickly established itself as one of the best co-op experiences back in 2009, and succeeded despite being forgettable in the realm of story. Not so with Borderlands 2, which not only builds on the RPG systems and excellent shooting of its predecessor in practical ways, but tells a compelling story full of memorable, endearing characters. There are few arguments for a better time with friends in 2012.

Retro City Rampage welcomes Xbox 360 owners to the mean streets of Theftropolis on January 2, 2013. The official word comes from the game's creator, Brian Provinciano, who tells us the PlayStation 3 Europe and Asia launches, along with the WiiWare release, should also occur in January.

"Remember that the XBLA version has an additional month of development, polish, tuning and improvements," said Provinciano. Those updates have also been patched into the PS3 and PC versions, which have been available since October 9.

In a year full of great games, our review of RCR called it the "perfect game for gamers."

Retro City Rampage is currently going through the certification process for Xbox Live Arcade and WiiWare. RCR creator Brian Provinciano mentioned on Twitter (noticed by Eurogamer) that the game will "hopefully" be out this month on WiiWare, with no date mentioned for XBLA.

The game is also close to a launch on the European PlayStation Network, where it has been available in the States since October 9, along with PC. If you have the opportunity, do check RCR out, for in our review we called it the "perfect game for gamers."

In many ways, it bites off more than it can chew, especially when it comes to some of the one-time gimmick missions. Regardless, it is an ambitious achievement that celebrates everything that gaming has been and ever will be. It's clever, funny, outrageous, and even a bit frustrating, but there is a genuine respect for both the players and the sources of all the referenced material.

To some, Retro City Rampage may be a bit rough around the edges, but to others, it's the kind of game that brings a smile to your face whenever you play it. All of the time and attention that went into the little details of this game shine through for the initiated, and make it an overall wonderful experience.

Despite all of these complaints, RCR manages to rise above mediocrity thanks to its sheer scope and detail. Its creator has invested remarkable love and effort into this game, and while you're sometimes left with the impression that he just couldn't bear to cut certain personal favorite bits that the game would have been better off without, you can't help but admire the amount of stuff to be done here.

YOU'LL LOVE
A virtual museum of the 1980s
8-bit, pixelated graphics rendered with care
Clever, surprisingly biting script

YOU'LL HATE
Poor mechanics are still bad even when you joke about them
“Classic” gameplay often just out of date
Getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of nostalgia

Seasoned players will enjoy it on a higher level, smiling at every sly wink and clever nod, but even the uninitiated should have a good time waging a one-man crime spree through Theftropolis.

It's an adventure built of other adventures, then, and its originality comes from the manner in which everything comes together. If you love old games - and old movies and all that other old jazz - there's a good chance you're going to love this, too. It has an ancient heart, shot full of bullets and criss-crossed with tyre treads.

True fact: Retro City Rampage has been in development since the late ’80s. I mean, look at it. To this day, no one knows exactly how it managed to pre-date many of the games it originally set out to parody, but you can’t argue with the sheer history that’s written in charming 8-bit graphics. It has, in other words, been quite a long wait since VBlank first took the wraps off Retro City Rampage. Next week, though, you’ll be able to tastefully array its files on your hard drive or maybe even play it if you’re into that kind of thing.
