Nightlife: Rift Rogue Class Trailer

By the sounds of things, fantasy MMORPG Rift is the most competent game to try and encroach on World of Warcraft’s turf in quite some time. Our man Dan Gril was certainly impressed, and the view from the top of Mount Metacritic is impressive enough. The latest trailer, showcasing the Rogue class and the game’s create-your-own-class mechanics in general can be seen after the jump. You know, in case you were thinking about going rogue. Ha! Ah. Ahh.(more…)

Direct2Drive knocking 15% off March's best sellers

In celebration of, um, March, Direct2Drive is reducing the price of this month's top fifteen games by fifteen percent. The list of titles includes the likes of Dead Space 2, Rift, Shogun 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm. Fifteen percent amounts to a reasonably hefty $9 discount on $60 titles and around $7.50 on $50 titles, and it also has the effect of lowering Magicka's already ridiculously low $10 price to just $8.50.

Head over to Direct2Drive to see the full list of titles, and enter the promo code "MARCHMAYHEM" at checkout to receive the discount.

Rift’s updates have begun, and with 1.1 comes the “dynamic event” River Of Souls, which is some kind of invasion by “the plane of death”, aka the undead faction. There’s a video to illustate the goings on (below) it’s all a bit dramatic, with giants, and an skeletal dragon, and some woman talking about weak flesh. Exciting stuff.

Not sure about that voice acting, though. Hmm. Anyone playing Rift? Come on, hands up. (more…)

Wot I Think: Rift

I’ve played a lot of MMOs. I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ATVs under fire off the Oshur gate. I watched ice-crystals glitter in the darkness near the shoulder of Arthas. Tiered PvP rewards in the rain… Actually, you probably believe all of those things. So you understand that, after all that, I might not want to start another MMO. Another fantasy MMO. Another fantasy MMO that looks awfully like WoW, Aion, WAR…

It’s so easy to damn this game for its familiarity. Yet, even the developers admitted to us that Rift isn’t particularly original in most regards; they were happy to say that it was a portmanteau of all their favourite games and all the MMOs they’ve worked on (lots). However, as those games were packed with good ideas and as the developers know what they’re doing, learning from experience is not a bad thing. So MMO veterans (which is y’all) will recognise the button-chaining and tab-targetting, the ability to survive ankle-shattering falls with barely a whimper, and the useless pets; but you’ll praise the mounts at zero level, the ease of getting the various currencies and the huge world of optional quests. RIFT subscription deals available through March 31

Trion Worlds' assault on World of Warcraft, the just-launched RIFT, is the same price to play per month -- but if you subscribe now through the end of March, it'll cost you less. Its publisher announced today that it's extending the "Founder's Subscription" pricing plans through March 31, offering as much as $5 per month off in exchange for buying in for six months.

A half-year of play time is going for $10 a month for the time being, with three-months at $11. Once April rolls around, RIFT subscriptions will run $15 a month, or $11 if bought six months at a time. It's not a massive savings, but anything to save come copper, right?
