Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception might be months away, but the multiplayer beta begins today. For a few weeks, we'll be able to try a handful of modes and maps developer Naughty Dog has whipped up. Today's PSN update marks the beginning of the PlayStation Plus-exclusive Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta. However, PlayStation Plus membership was offered as part of the "Welcome Back" package, meaning the "exclusive" beta is not so exclusive. In fact, it's essentially open to everyone using the PS Store (if they've activated those free memberships -- you only have until July 3 to do so), so there will be a lot of people rushing to download the beta.

Basically, what we're saying is that something given away after a PSN outage is about to knock the PSN out again, jeopardizing your ability to get Beyond Good and Evil HD. Check out all the DLC for this week after the break.

With the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta launching TODAY, Tuesday, June 28, we want to make everyone has full details! We’ve compiled a handy little UPDATED list of Frequently Asked Questions below. If you’ve got any other questions, let us know in the comments and we’ll answer what we can!

When can I start playing?
Tuesday, June 28, for all inFAMOUS 2 and current PlayStation Plus members, who all get early access to the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta.

If you’re not an owner of inFAMOUS 2 or a current PlayStation Plus member, we’re opening the floodgates to the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta for EVERYONE on Tuesday, July 5.

What time EXACTLY can I start playing?
When the PlayStation Store updates today. While we can’t guarantee an exact time the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta will likely start propagating on the PSN Stores around the world at around 2:00 PM PDT (what time is that in my city?).

It may not be available right at that time, as there are a lot of things involved into making this happen, so please be patient if you don’t spot it immediately. Keep an eye out on the Naughty Dog Twitter and we’ll update as soon as we know it’s gone live.

When does the Beta end?
The UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta will end on Thursday, July 14.

What modes and maps are available?
Throughout the three weeks of the Beta, we’ll be rotating through a variety competitive and co-op gametypes, along with access to three different maps.

June 28 to July 3 Gametypes:
Team Deathmatch, Plunder, Three Team Deathmatch, Hardcore, Co-op Arena
Maps:
Airstrip, Chateau July 4 to July 9 Gametypes:
Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Team Objective, Hardcore, Co-op Hunter
Maps:
Airstrip, Chateau July 10 to July 14 Gametypes:
Team Deathmatch, Plunder, Three Team Deathmatch, Hardcore, Co-op Adventure,
Co-op Arena
Maps:
Airstrip, Yemen

Wait, what’s the Hardcore gametype and why haven’t I heard about this yet?
We’re revealing a brand new competitive gametype with today’s update – one that has been specifically requested by many members in our community!

The Hardcore gametype is Team Deathmatch stripped down to the core basics – no Boosters, no Medal Kickbacks, and no Power Plays. Weapon Mods are still available – be sure to head to the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta discussion forum and let us know what you think about how Weapon Mods feel within this gametype, along with anything else that you want to tell us!

Can you tell me more about a specific gametype or map?
Since we revealed our first look at UNCHARTED 3 multiplayer back in April, we’ve put together a bunch of videos that provide a good sneak peek at the majority of what is included in the Multiplayer Beta. We’ve compiled those videos into a handy UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer YouTube playlist embedded below:

Can you tell me about any of the Boosters, Medal Kickbacks, and Weapon I can expect in the Beta?
Sure thing! Here goes…

Will Power Plays be active? What weapons will I have? What characters can I choose to play with? Will I be able to customize them? And Emblems?
Power Plays are active, so if you’re in a match that is decidedly lopsided, you’ll get to experience it. As far as weapons, we’ve got a good range of sidearms and long guns to use and unlock in the beta, such as the AK-47, G-MAL, Para – 9, M9 and more! You’ll only get to choose between a few characters, but you’ll have access to a limited set of customization options to personalize your character on both the Heroes and Villains team. You can also check out our Emblem editor and create your own custom emblems.

Can I play in Stereoscopic 3D and/or use split-screen?
YES! Yes, you can. But not at the same time.

Can I see my Facebook Friends list?
Yes, all of your Facebook Friends that have linked their Facebook account via their PS3 will appear on the Facebook Friends list in our multiplayer menu. Feel free to send them an invite to play the UNCHARTED 3 Beta!

Can I upload videos and photos to Facebook or YouTube?
No, that functionality is not available during the Beta.

Will my Beta progress or unlocks carry over to the final game?
No, what happens in the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta stays in the Beta, however we’ve lined up some killer rewards for the retail version of UNCHARTED 3 if you keep playing in the Beta:

  • Download the UNCHARTED 3 Beta and receive the exclusive UNCHARTED 3 PSN Beta Tester Avatar!
  • Complete 10 matches in every mode of Competitive Multiplayer and receive the Exclusive Beta Decal Pack 1!
  • Complete 5 matches in every mode of Co-operative Multiplayer and receive the Exclusive Beta Decal Pack 2!
  • Complete 4 Treasure Sets and receive the Treasure Hunter’s Starter Pack!
  • Rank up to level 25 in the Beta and receive a handsome reward of in-game cash on day one!

Is there a level cap in the Beta?
Yes, it’s currently set to level 25.

Can I check my UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta stats on NaughtyDog.com?
Stay tuned – we’ve got some cool things in store for NaughtyDog.com real soon. We’ll keep you updated on the Naughty Dog blog as soon as we can reveal more.

I like/hate something in the Beta OR I think I found a bug – where do I tell you about this?
Let us know on the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta forum in the NaughtyDog.com Community Forums.

We can’t stress this enough – please, please, PLEASE post in the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta forum with your thoughts, complaints and suggestions! Your forum feedback was critical in finalizing the UNCHARTED 2 multiplayer modes between Beta and the final retail version. We absolutely want your feedback this time around as well. You will help us make a better multiplayer game.

You already read a mess of information about Uncharted 3's upcoming multiplayer beta back before E3, but now developer Naughty Dog wants to show it off in a slurry of walkthrough videos (which we've dropped after the break). The studio also revealed a variety of details about the beta, breaking down which gametypes and maps will be paired across the beta's three weeks, as well as noting it'll take up approximately 1.7GB of your precious HDD space.

Additionally, ND says that the beta will allow for stereoscopic 3D, as well as split-screen co-op (though not both simultaneously, of course). As the beta goes live tomorrow for PlayStation Plus subscribers and inFamous 2 owners, you may be wondering when you'll be murdering Drake with ... uh ... other Drakes -- unfortunately, the studio isn't sure just yet, but suggests keeping an eye on the official Naughty Dog Twitter account for up-to-the-minute info. Studio head Evan Wells also notes on his Twitter feed that the beta "should be on PSN around 2PM PDT tomorrow," so there's that.

One of my personal favorite moments from our E3 PlayStation live show has to be Naughty Dog’s visit. Community Strategist Arne Meyer brought along a doggie bag of Sully fries, a double quarter-pounder of Nathan Drake, and a jaw-dropping demo which premiered at our PlayStation E3 press event. You may have also seen this demo make its late-night premiere on Jimmy Fallon last night, but that was only a fraction of UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception. Arne was awesome enough to walk us through the full demo and explain some of technical hurdles Naughty Dog is jumping in order to bring such an impressive demo to E3 2011.

Watch for moments when we chat about their evolved water effects engine, dynamical changing the environments around you, horseback riding, and best of all — answering your Twitter questions. Enjoy the ride.

Of all the things that Jimmy Fallon is -- a man who can't help but laugh at his own jokes, half the starring cast of the hit film Taxi -- he's been largely represented on Joystiq in one way: as a gamer. Fallon held up his reputation once again last night by having Naughty Dogs Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra on to show off Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, playing through a bit of the demo we saw last week at E3.

Most odd about the demo, however, is Fallon's repeated amazement at what the game does when he himself isn't actually controlling Drake's actions. If Naughty Dog was hoping for Fallon to dramatically point out the game's scripted action moments, he more than overdelivers. Head past the break and look on in amazement with us, won't you?

As it's the last official day of E3 2011, we took to the rapidly thinning show floor to snap some pics of Sony's enormous setup this year. Of course the company's forthcoming handheld, the PlayStation Vita, was on full display, but games like Uncharted 3 and Ninja Gaiden ... 3 seemed most adept at drawing the attention of attendees. And hey, did you know Sony games are all about 3D? 'Cause they totally are.

As I watched the latest demonstration of Naughty Dog's upcoming, half-tucked installment in the Uncharted franchise be played out in a dark and decorated corner of the E3 expo hall, I couldn't help but consider the Pixies. Not because the demo was bland enough to allow my mind to wander -- quite the opposite, actually -- but because of the rigidity to which Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception adheres to the seminal indie rock band's trademark song construction style: It's loud, then it's quiet, then it's loud again.

The demo consisted of Nate Drake's struggle for survival on a sinking cruise ship and a 3D-infused cinematic trailer -- both of which were shown off during Sony's E3 press conference -- as well as a new, far more aerial action sequence. All three highlighted distinct set pieces in Uncharted 3's world, but all three were also invariably connected by steady, stark waves of rising and falling action.

All of Naughty Dog has been looking forward to tonight ever since we announced Uncharted 3 with Entertainment Weekly and showed it for the first time at the SPIKE VGA show back in December. And just a few minutes ago, if you were watching the SCEA Press Conference on any of the live streams, you go to see what we’ve been working so hard to be able to show you!

At the SCEA Press Conference, our Co-Presidents, Evan and Christophe, took the stage and with just a short intro, launched into the first live demo of Uncharted 3 ever shown publicly. The brief Cruise Ship sequence shows just a small slice of one of the most challenging scenarios we’ve concocted for any of the Uncharted games – as a massive, moving environment of the Cruise Ship gets turned on its side mid-battle, Drake has to scramble for his life. This sequence showcases the next level of our physics and water technology – and you’ll see video of this sequence later this week.

The Cruise Ship isn’t everything we’ve got up our sleeves – Naughty Dog is bringing more content to E3 2011 than we ever have before. We’ve also brought a ton of PS3 systems all hooked up with a massive chunk of the Uncharted 3 competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes – those are all on the floor of the SCEA booth for all E3 attendees to check it out. Do drop by!

Speaking of multiplayer, at the SCEA Press Conference, Christophe announced that PlayStation and SUBWAY struck a partnership that will allow Uncharted fans throughout the United States early access to the COMPLETE Uncharted 3 competitive multiplayer experience. This partnership starts in October and we’ll be sure to keep you updated with more details later on this year.

We’ve also prepared what I think is one of our best trailers to date of any of the Uncharted games. Check out the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception E3 2011 trailer above!

One more thing, if you happen to come by the SCEA booth this week, we’ve giving out a limited number of E3 exclusive Uncharted 3 t-shirts! The awesome t-shirt design was created by the excellent Cory Schmitz and this is the only time you’ll be able to grab a t-shirt with this design on it. Each t-shirt will also come with a very special, very limited PSN voucher code good for one of three Uncharted 3 in-game items once the game ships in November:

  • The t-shirt design on a torso item for your customizable multiplayer character
  • Mystery Skinned Weapon #3
  • Mystery Skinned Weapon #4

I’m also going to be attending several of the reader meetups and events throughout the week and I’ll be bringing a few t-shirts and codes with me – keep an eye on the Naughty Dog Twitter to see where I’m headed.

If you remember, we handed out t-shirts and codes just like these back at PAX East and they were extremely popular, to say the least. If you can’t make it out to E3 this year, don’t fret!

Have a great E3 everyone – I’m looking forward to a crazy, yet awesome week working the show floor!

We're still five days from E3 [nervous puke] but try telling Nathan Drake he needs to wait until the appropriate time to show-off Uncharted 3's co-op mode. Look at game's title, the silly goof doesn't even know where he's going, you think he can afford to be picky about when he gets there?

The reveal went down last night on GameTrailers TV where designer Richard Cambier said that the mode will dust-off some co-op partners for Drake that haven't made an appearance in the franchise in a while.

Also shown off in the footage is new, Dark Void-esque vertical gunplay which has corpses falling so close to our hero that you can practically hear them shout "Hey, I loved you guys in Mafia 2!" See for yourself right after the break.
