Have you read our recent mega-blowouts of Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity? Then congratulations: you know everything about Pillars of Eternity except what the pillars of eternity actually are. But Obsidian’s not planning to dip a furtive pinky toe into classic CRPG waters and then leave its legacy behind again. This time, it’s in control of its own destiny, and no one knows that better than CEO Feargus Urquhart. He wants to push the classic Black Isle mold further than it’s ever gone before, into worlds so immense that the classic Infinity Engine never would’ve been able to handle them. But that was then, and this is now. His company has new-old tech and new-old ideas. Hear all about Urquhart’s grandest plans below.

Last time we looked at 'Skywind,' the elaborate mod that puts Morrowind into Skyrim, it was mostly eye candy. While the team behind the project still has a ways to go, it seems like they're making progress on the mod judging from this new trailer.Read more...

Skywind is a mod that brings Morrowind into the Skyrim engine. It’s like someone at Bethesda took the Morrowind and Skyrim design documents and riffle shuffled them as a party trick, and then forgot to unshuffle them. Somehow–probably through a montage–those files ended up with modders. A less tired Craig would probably recount that montage, but that show-off wasn’t up late playing Starbound and eating takeaway, so you just get facts and trailers. The last time I reported on Skywind, it was just an empty world. You could run around, but you could not do anything, but more recent updates have begun the task of integrating people, monsters, and quests. Which means it might be worth installing. There’s a wee video to demonstrate some of that work.(more…)

According to international law, I am not allowed to post the video I made playing of myself playing this Skyrim Mod, which changes the fighting music into Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. Now, I’ll admit there hundreds of reasons and at least three court orders that should prevent me from going anywhere near recording equipment, but I am sad that one of them is “A man in his pants enjoying a game and wants you to share it with the world.” It seems like my happiness, and the happiness others would get from it, should override petty rules and regulations, particularly when it involves Skyrim and the Top Gun soundtrack.(more…)

Nineteen-year-old Alexander Velicky's Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim mod, Falskaar, was originally meant to be part video game, part Bethesda job application. Earlier this week, Velicky posted to the Bethesda forums that while Falskaar failed to land him a position at the company of Dovahkiin and friends, he has instead found gainful employment as an Associate Designer at Bungie. You could say his acceptance at Bungie instead of Bethesda means he just had a different ... destiny.

Velicky wrote that the experience gave him a "corny life lesson" he wanted to pass on: never be afraid to try. "I applied to many companies, and Bungie was in my, 'Huge company that will completely ignore me' category. Well, they didn't and look what it got me. Bungie is an awesome company with an amazing team, and I'm very lucky that they've decided to give me a chance! Never be afraid to try."

Velicky thanked the modding community for their support and encouragement, saying that he wouldn't be where he is without their support and encouragement. He also noted that he's "unsure" if he'll keep modding. Velicky's top priority will be his professional work, but he specifically called out the oft-rumored - but not yet formally announced - Fallout 4 as something that he may not be able to resist.

Good luck at your new job, Alexander!

Like so many diamonds and angry Creepers, the people behind the Xbox 360 iteration of Minecraft have once again unearthed something unexpected: an upcoming DLC pack full of content drawn from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Included in this addition are "an exclusive Skyrim-themed texture set, 40 character skins, themed menus and user interface, craftable items," and 20 songs from the Skyrim soundtrack. Most intriguingly, the DLC also adds a new pre-generated world to Minecraft. While this will obviously be a blocky adaptation, the map is said to directly mimic that seen in Skyrim, and will cover an area that includes Bleak Falls Barrow, Whiterun and Riverwood.

There's no word on when we can expect a public release for this DLC, but those attending this year's Minecon in Orlando, Florida this weekend will be the first to see the new content.

H… h… h… hey there, Lichdom. Gee, you sure are pretty. Why, you’re basically what Skyrim would’ve been if Bethesda wasn’t still using a 1000-year-old engine. You maybe want to get coffee some– [trips over an inconveniently placed chair, falls out the door, stumbles into a patch of cacti, trips over a hillside, rolls into an errant band of wild boars, loses terribly on an episode of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, crawls broken and defeated back to Lichdom's location] time?

If someone is keeping a Big List Of Inevitable Things somewhere, they can cross out ‘modders remaking Morrowind in the Skyrim engine’. For it is no longer inevitable, but is in fact, er, evitable? No, that’s not right. Though I guess you could avoid it, but that would make the modders of Skywind very sad indeed, because all their hard work in rebuilding Morrowind is worth looking at. Even if you just coo over the videos below, because cooing over the scenery is pretty much all that’s possible right now.(more…)
