It's the Monday after Thanksgiving, and there are video game deals on Amazon - lots of 'em. New releases like Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3 or Arkham City for $40? Yup. Dark Souls for $35? Yes. Following the departure of its CEO and CFO, Future Publishing's new CEO, Mark Wood, has a plan: The UK-based company will combine resources with its US branch, merging the two together. Wood hopes this move will "enable us to operate more efficiently and return the U.S. business to profitability." Future's US branch is responsible for Nintendo Power, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, OXM and @Gamer, among others.

Future has been planning to shift its resources away from print to online for a few months now, following significant year-over-year losses. "The changes will also mean that we can accelerate our transition to a digital business model and start to sell our entire range of digital content to high-value audiences in the U.S. and other key markets," Wood added.

#metroid Before the 3DS launched, Nintendo promised that it'd be rolling out a catalog of Game Boy classics for their new handheld. While that roll-out hasn't been as fast as some fans has wanted, a genuine classic's hitting the system this Thursday. Metroid II: Return of Samus sends the iconic bounty hunter to the home planet of the powerful alien race to exterminate them all. Fans of the franchise knows that the game sets up the even more beloved Super Metroid; you'll be able to download it from the eShop in 48 hours or so. More »

Toys R' Us is offering some pre-Black Friday savings this weekend. This Friday from 3pm to midnight, and Saturday from 7am to 1pm, all 360, PS3, Wii and 3DS games will be buy one, get one 40 percent off. Furthermore, starting this Sunday, November 20, and running through Wednesday, November 23, all DS and 3DS games will also be buy one, get one 40 percent off.

Sure, they may not be truly killer deals, but it's hard to put a price on not getting trampled.

We're really pleased we don't work at Best Buy during the holiday season. We're sure it's a wonderful company to work for in general, but its Black Friday sales are almost as legendary as Wal-Mart's, though thankfully not as lethal (yet, fingers crossed).

This year Best Buy is offering deals on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and 3DS swag, including 360 and PS3 console-and-game bundles for $200, three months of Xbox Live Gold for $8, Assassin's Creed: Revelations for $35 and a bevy of major new titles for $30. You can even snag X-Men: Destiny for $30 in a special "pay more than it's worth" sale. If you're not brave enough to go to the store (we don't blame you), Best Buy is offering free shipping on everything from now until Dec. 27 on its website.

#shinobi It's been a hell of a month for side-scrollers from 20 or more years ago. First Sonic, next Mario and now Shinobi. Joe Musashi is back, on the 3DS. This launch trailer sets up his mission of revenge and shows off what looks like some gyrometer-enabled gameplay. Players will mix a new combo system in with good old ninja magic to defeat the terrorists once and for all. Shinobi hits shelves on Tuesday. More »

#pokemon With a Victini-themed sweepstakes, the limited theatrical release of Pokémon the Movie: White-Victini and Zekrom, and a special December distribution event, players will be hard-pressed to elude the victory Pokémon this holiday, not that they'd want to. More »

Capcom released its earnings for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012 (which puts the halfway point at September 30). Net sales are down year-over-year, from 40.7 billion yen ($522 million) in 2010 to 29.3 billion yen ($375.1 million) in 2011. Net income is down 878 million yen ($11.3 million). Capcom attributes the downward trend to the fact that "no major titles were launched in Consumer Online Games business."

As for the titles that did come out in that period, Capcom sold 450,000 units of the Japan-only Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver., the PS3 port of the PSP hit. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition brought Oni into 400,000 homes worldwide, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D also sold 400,000 worldwide. "These figures are shipment volumes," president Haruhiro Tsujimoto noted in his summary of the results, "so digital downloads are on top of those figures."

The second half of Capcom's year will be anchored by the December 10 launch of Monster Hunter Tri-G in Japan (of which Capcom expects to sell 1.2 million copies), and Dragon's Dogma (1.5 million), Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (2 million), and Street Fighter X Tekken (2 million) worldwide. Oh, and Snoopy's Street Fair for iPhone. In a Q&A, the publisher said it "will consider launching [Monster Hunter Tri-G] overseas," but hasn't come to a decision yet.

Capcom also announced that it's merging its North American subsidiaries, Capcom USA and Capcom Entertainment, Inc. In other news, Capcom had two North American subsidiaries.

Last week's news was tragic for Nintendo: Profits for its fiscal first half were deeply in the red to the tune of $926 million.

A near $1-billion six-month loss is potentially catastrophic for most companies, but for a game company like Nintendo the profits typically come at the end of the fiscal year, the period ending in March, which includes the heavy holiday buying season. First and second quarter losses are not unheard of; they're even expected. What isn't expected, at least for Nintendo, is a potential loss for the entire fiscal year, which is what Nintendo is facing this year, projecting revenues $264 million in the red for the first time since the company began reporting profits in 1981.

To get some perspective on what this means for Nintendo and, perhaps, the game industry, I spoke with two men who have been following recent events intently, and Nintendo as a whole for most of its existence: Kyle Orland, News Editor at Gamasutra, founder of Super Mario Bros. HQ and self-confessed "Nintendo fanboy," and Bill Harris, industry analyst and blogger at Dubious Quality.

Target will hold a "buy 2, get 1 free" sale on its stock of video games next week. With half of the season's major titles out -- Uncharted 3 hits next Tuesday during the sale -- 'tis the season for bargain watching.

#nintendo We live in an era of demos and freemium games now and one thing that's probably hampered the fortunes of the 3DS game library is that users can't try anything before they buy it. There's no ability to sample and see if a title might be worth your ducats. After apparently getting requests from Nintendo's finally got the hint on this and a few other connectivity issues and will be rolling out features to beef up the services offered through eShop and the web. More terrible news from Japan: Nintendo has posted a $926 million loss for the first half of the fiscal year ending in March 2012. Take a second look at that number. That's 926 million dollars. As in "very close to a billion."

The sheer volume of that amount of cash is staggering. In ones, it would fill a room roughly the size of the one Scrooge McDuck uses to hold his gold. Now imagine simply handing that money over to ... someone. Iwata, perhaps. The point is, you had it and now it's gone. Sucks, right? OK, now you know how Nintendo feels. It gets worse.
