The "Summer of 8 Bit" begins with two downloadable 3DS releases of NES games that were, until now, exclusive to "Ambassadors:" The Legend of Zelda and NES Open Tournament Golf. Each game will get eShop release updates, such as save states (Ambassadors can update their existing games). Also available on this spectacularly packed day are Family Tennis 3D and a demo for Square Enix's Heroes of Ruin.

Nintendo's "Game of the Weekend" promotion continues with a special $4.99 price on Sakura Samurai, from 12pm EDT Friday through midnight Monday morning. There's more, on 3DS, DS, and Wii, so check it all out after the break.

Nintendo's Audioguide Louvre, 3DS software designed to assist self-guided tours of the Louvre museum, may seem like a weird, random lark, but Shigeru Miyamoto is much more serious about the software than we thought.

"One big thing I recently handled is the Audioguide Louvre - Nintendo 3DS, referred to earlier in this meeting," Miyamoto told investors during a recent Q&A. "This has not made money yet, but it has the potential to be one of our core businesses in the future."

Later, in a nod to the announcement, reaction to, and eventual retraction of the announcement of Miyamoto's eventual retirement, Miyamoto admonished the assembled shareholders. " I should be careful about telling you about these things and I would like to add that we are not announcing any concrete business plans here. I would also be glad if you carefully tell someone else about my remarks."

Seemingly in an effort to have the most confusing career path possible, former Electronic Gaming Monthly editor in chief James Mielke has left his post as a producer at Q? Entertainment (where he headed development of the excellent Lumines Electronic Symphony) and joined Q-Games , thus making those two companies even easier to mix up.

"To be clear, Q and I are parting company on the best of terms," Mielke told CVG, referring to Q? Entertainment. "For a lot of reasons I won't bore you with the time felt right to shift gears and move forward."

If his first project at Q-Games is called "Pixeljunk Luminous" or is a Pixeljunk Eden spinoff for children, we quit.

#nintendo In the midst of Nintendo's massive barrage of news last night, the House of Mario also announced a new 8-Bit Summer promotion. They'll be rolling out two old-school games a week on the 3DS' eShop digital store starting on July 5th, with titles that will include the original Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and Sonic Rush. The NES classic Double Dragon 2 unexpectedly shows up on Wii today, in an otherwise portable-heavy week. Today's 3DS releases include the popular Order Up!!, and a series of "Slitherlink" math puzzles.

Normally, we don't give too much attention to the kids' stuff on DSiWare, but we feel compelled to share this. There is a game called Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku, and it is a sudoku game designed for four-year-olds. You line up pictures of fruit instead of numbers. This is incredible.

It's two weeks after E3, so naturally Nintendo has more announcements to make (just as it did two days before E3). As has become the company's custom, it'll host a "Nintendo Direct" video, streaming from Nintendo's site, tonight at 12am EST.

According to a brief blurb from Nintendo, the video will be "about Nintendo 3DS, Wii and Nintendo DS products," so don't expect to hear any surprises about the Wii U. Do expect to see a different room in Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters.

It's been too long since Nintendo addressed its fans, but the company is breaking its two-week info drought with a new Nintendo Direct webcast focusing on Wii, DS and 3DS, tonight at midnight Eastern here. We'll cover the top news. More »
