#supermario Yesterday, I had a chance to play through several levels of Super Mario 3D Land. I came away impressed by the way that the game successfully combines elements of 2D and 3D Mario games into a fun, playable package. Is it enough to pull pull the 3DS out of its current tailspin? No. Is that a fair burden to place on a single game? Well no, not really. More »

Not much news to report, but I took a meeting with Nintendo of America this morning to play a few new levels of Super Mario 3D Land and check out the updated version of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords.

When Nintendo asked if there were any questions about last night's press conference, naturally most of them were about the circle pad add-on, which technically wasn't even at the event--it showed up after online.

Unfortunately, Nintendo of America didn't have anything to say about the add-on's availability in North America. That may have more to do with the accessory's current ties to Monster Hunter, a franchise that hasn't achieved the same phenomenon status over here.

We'll have to wait a little longer to find out what Nintendo's plans are outside Japan.

On Nintendo's website last night, the company confirmed the first set of games to support the add-on--Monster Hunter Tri 3G, Resident Evil: Revelations, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D, Dynasty Warriors, and Kingdom Hearts 3: Dream Drop Distance--which will cost 1,500 yen (about $20) when it arrives on store shelves on December 10.

That's the same release date as Monster Hunter Tri 3G in Japan and may be awfully close (or the same day) as Vita.

Your guess is as good as mine! It's clear that Bowser actually does have a Tanooki Tail here, but we haven't seen him put it to use in any of the game's footage. Looks like we have some secrets to look forward to!

Not content with the mini-flood of 3DS news out of last night's Nintendo 3DS Conference? Nintendo of America has some exciting news tailored to American tastes, including release dates for its two biggest upcoming 2011 releases.

Super Mario 3D Land will travel into America (and into your screen, thanks to the 3D effect) on November 13; it'll be followed by automotive adventure Mario Kart 7 on December 4, which now has a gyro-controlled first-person mode. You know, for the real feeling of being atop a tiny go-kart driving into a banana peel. Check out a trailer after the break.

Additionally, the Wii's Mario/Dragon Quest board game, Fortune Street, is teaching us Slime economics on December 5, and the DS Fossil Fighters sequel is coming November 14. What we won't see this year is Paper Mario for 3DS -- that, along with Luigi's Mansion 2, is slated for 2012.

We've known for a while that Super Mario 3D Land features the return of Mario's cherished Tanooki Suit, which powers up the heroic plumber with a furry costume equipped with a powerful swiping tail. But it seems like after all these years, his arch-nemesis is tired of Mario being the only one to use power-ups like that so Bowser's going to use the raccoon power too...

Whatever you do, don't call Super Mario 3D Land a new 3D Mario game. Despite that being one of the key ideas behind this new adventure - that it is the first original, portable Mario game in 3D - Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto isn't attempting to make 3D Land like Super Mario 64...

The new Super Mario for 3DS is an interesting new take on 3D Mario gameplay ... in that it largely restricts the level design to 2D. Or, at least, 2.5D. There are plenty of sections where you move in and out of the screen, sure, but for the most part, you're following corridor-style paths from left to right. Where previous 3D Mario games were about exploring spaces, Super Mario is in general about navigating to the end of the level. It's a mix of the styles of classic and 3D Mario.

It also makes more of an effort to integrate the 3D effect into gameplay. But the parts that don't really deal with that are a lot more effective than the ones that do.
