#supermario Mario's coming to a handheld in an all-new game. That's always cause for celebration and Nintendo's going to be mounting some rather athletic festivities this coming weekend. To commemorate the release of Super Mario 3D Land on Sunday, Nintendo will be setting up an obstacle course in New York City's Times Square complete with trampolines, warp pipes and a flagpole marker. Along with all the frolicking, attendees will be able to take pictures with Mario and, most importantly, buy Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS early. No word if they'll be handing out Tanooki tails. Yesterday, we found out that the Japanese version of Super Mario 3D Land packed a mandatory 3DS firmware update, which enhanced security (of course) but also streamlined the friends list, adding a new "Join Game" option.

Today, upon the arrival of our US review copy, we discovered that the same firmware update is loaded on that version, as well, and offers the same amenities. You can see the "Join Game" button at the top of the screenshot above. It's faded out because the game I had running at the time doesn't have multiplayer.

There's more 3DS updating to come, as a more comprehensive update is due this month to add video recording features, along with updated StreetPass games, DLC functionality, and other eShop improvements.

I think the thing that strikes me the most is all the little things that you’d invariably miss the first time round, only to spot them when you play again. All the little visual touches, the audio cues to games from the past, the way that long-established genre staples have been evolved to suit this game. Toad’s house has that tune playing when you go in, some Goombas have Tanooki tails that waggle as they run, you jump on an enemy and the coin is instantly added to your running total rather than you having to go chasing it. All little things admittedly but the joy is in the detail and the way Nintendo have taken existing things and re-invigorated everything for a modern audience is very clever and SM3DL is full of incidental tweaks like this. You cannot help but just sit and stare at it all in wonder.

Those letters return in Super Mario 3D Land, but this time around they're actually 3D pictures that tell a story. You can check out a bunch at the link below, but be careful. The pictures tell a story, and they do indeed spoil some things!
