I could probably tell you more the origins of prohibition than I could about Mega Man games. Did you know that, on average, Americans consumed three times as much hard liquor while the eighteenth amendment was in place than they do now? And that there were getting on for 100,000 illegal speakeasies in New York alone? By contrast, I can tell you that I once played a Mega Man game on a friend’s GameBoy in the early 1990s and thought it was kind of hard.

Mega Man isn’t exactly a PC series, but nonetheless Capcom are releasing official retro shooty-platformers Street Fighter x Mega Man later this month, as a celebration of the series turning 25 and an apology for doing something or other I don’t really understand that made Mega Man fans upset. It features the little blue chap battling against similarly pint-size, 2D recreations of Street Fighter’s man-puncher’s gallery.(more…)

Capcom’s blog has mentioned that the PC version of Super Streetfighter IV Arcade Edition is getting multiple updates: “Our development team has been cracking the whip on this project, and are aiming to have the 2012 update ready for you all by the end of February. We will have additional updates in these upcoming weeks. so keep an eye on this space for more info.” The patch was a big rebalance of various characters, which were deemed out of whack, so to speak, on the console versions for a patch in December.

You may have already check out the original Street Fighter IV when it was released on PC back in mid-2009, but this will be the first time the mouse and keyboard crowd will get to jump in and test out Super newcomers like Hakan and Juri along with the Arcade Edition fighters Oni, Evil Ryu, Yun and Yang...

I do believe that is the longest abbreviation I have ever put in a headline. But still not as long as the one Lewie used in the original story about this issue. The news should be clear, however: Capcom have announced some substantial changes to their original DRM plan for the PC version of Super Streetfighter IV’s Arcade Edition. Christian Svensson writes:

Shortly after launch (it might even be at launch, but we’ll see how submission timing and approval goes) we will roll out a small title update that will completely remove the character limitations for offline mode. That is to say, once you’ve updated, you will be able to use all 39 characters when not connected to the Internet to practice your combo timings, have some fun with a friend on a laptop, or whatever while offline.

So that’s different. It’s not too surprising either, given Svensson’s apparent attention to PC as a format.

Capcom isn't really known for its PC titles -- sure, ports here and there populate the platform, but it's primarily a console company. In a missive over on Capcom-Unity, corporate officer and senior veep, Christian Svensson, details how he and a select few others within Capcom are working to change that. "As we continue to expand our businesses in Russia, China, Korea and Brazil, the PC becomes increasingly important as it is the primary platform in those territories," he says.

Svensson points to the "historically" small PC market in Japan as a hurdle, which means the Japanese developers aren't very familiar and comfortable with the platform -- but online experiences are becoming quite prevalent; a viable means of revenue and justification for allotting resources for PC development. The success of Monster Hunter Frontier Online is certainly helping Capcom understand the importance of the platform. "PC gaming's profile is growing at Capcom," Svensson assures.

Several games are slated to come to the PC this year, including Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Svensson says the Japanese COO and other execs "increasingly request a PC version" when discussing what to green light if no PC version is planned during the first stages of a product. "So in short, while we're still not yet where I'd like for us to be, the future is getting better for Capcom fans who are PC gamers all over the world."

Capcom is trying to tempt you into a purchase of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition with the seductive power of evil ... Bobble Budds. As a pre-order bonus for purchases of the game from the Capcom Store, the company is offering "Bobble Budd" toys of Oni (above) and Evil Ryu. Like past Bobble Budds, these have awakened evil forces that allow them to pack their bodies into their own spherical heads.

Free toys might not be enough to talk you out of just getting the Arcade Edition DLC on June 7; however, if you were already planning to buy the disc, now you can get free toys.
