Valve accepted 75 more games for distribution on Steam after approval from its community on Steam Greenlight, among which is Pier Solar and the Great Architects HD, Watermelon's remake of the Megadrive RPG. Pier Solar HD, which earned over $230,000 on Kickstarter in December 2012, is joined by a recent crowdfund hopeful, sci-fi sandbox roguelike Proven Lands.

In fact, a number of this week's new Steam recruits were once success stories on Kickstarter. Dolphin exam cheating simulator Classroom Aquatic earned over $31,000 earlier this month, Trichotomy's Dog Sled Saga found modest success in May 2013, roguelike Dungeonmans earned over $43,000 in August and MURA Interactive's twin-stick shooter Dubwars received over $34,000 in July. Additionally, Will O'Neill's game about love and depression, Actual Sunlight, was among the group of games added to Steam this week. [Image: Watermelon]

Valve is showing off its newly redesigned Steam Controller at GDC 2014, and Joystiq just tried it out. As avid Joystiq readers are already aware, the new version of Valve's controller ditches the central touch screen and its odd quadrangle of buttons for a more traditional setup, including four directional buttons and four lettered face buttons.

My impressions are more or less in line with our impressions from January. I tried out both Portal 2 and Broken Age. The circular track pad does a decent job of recreating mouse movement in Broken Age, though the sensitivity could make it difficult to settle the pointer on dialogue options (I wasn't able adjust sensitivity in my demo, which could alleviate the issue).

Using the thumb pads in Portal 2 proved much more challenging. Precision aiming when firing portals, especially when I had to make portals on a distant surface, was tricky. Four way movement was a little awkward as well, though I was pleased that my position on the thumb pad simulated analogue movement, allowing me to move at a slow creep or a quick run. The haptic feedback in both pads also helped create a feeling of resistance, though obviously it won't fool you into thinking you're using an analogue stick.

It's impressive that the Steam Controller can bounce between styles as disparate as 2D adventure and first-person puzzling, and its touch pads could become second nature over time, but it's definitely not going to provide a seamless transition from traditional controllers.

While self-funding a massively multiplayer real-time strategy game such as Stronghold Kingdoms was a risky move for a developer like Firefly Studios, it seems to be paying off as the castle building game has attracted over three million players since its debut on February 27.

Firefly cites a passionate player base for the game's success, and notes that the game draws 200,000 users from 100 countries each month. Of course, it helps that Stronghold Kingdoms is free to download and play, and is supported by optional microtransactions, but given the number of other online games available to players with the same "free to play" price of entry, that three million player figure is still an impressive achievement.

Those interested in joining the fight can find all the information they need to get up and running on the game's official website or by visiting its page on Steam. [Image: Firefly Studios]

Valve is gradually embracing the warmth of an enormous video screen being mounted to its face, as it updated the beta client of Steam to add a "virtual reality mode" option. The newest beta version of Steam removes the "-vr" command line option in favor of a button in the view menu, which only appears for those with SteamVR installed when a head-mounted display like the Oculus Rift is detected.

Virtual reality became a big focal point for Valve in recent years, and its former head of VR joined Oculus VR's new Seattle team just one week ago. Our friends at Engadget seem to believe that this week, the week of the Game Developers Conference, is the time that the virtual reality landscape will begin to "look very different." Given the recent rumor that Sony will unveil its own virtual reality headset in the coming days, we tend to agree. [Image: Oculus VR]

Deus Ex: The Fall made the jump from mobiles to PC today, and you can pick it up on Steam right now for $10 in North America, or £8/10 euros in Europe. The PC port was originally due on March 25, but Square Enix stealthily brought the release date forward by a week.

The Fall follows on from The Icarus Effect, a prequel novel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it features a different protagonist in former SAS mercenary Ben Saxon. The hero may be new but the game is a familiar mix of stealth, action, and gold-tinted cybernetics.

In terms of what's not familiar on PC, the port professes AI adjustments, revisions to the tutorial, the option to toggle cover styles, and controller support. Also, microtransactions have been removed from the game completely, with the economy tweaked as a result.

Finally, if you're tempted by the itch for more Deus Ex, you might like to know that if you buy The Fall today, you get a copy of Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition for free. [Image: Square Enix]

Ether One seems like a nice, calm exploration game - until it doesn't. Most of the gameplay takes place in the memories of dementia patients, where skilled Restorers repair broken images and minds. Restoration is a standard task in this technologically advanced world, but it retains the potential to go horribly wrong. And as the launch trailer shows, things do go wrong.

Really wrong.

Ether One is a first-person exploration and adventure game that recalls BioShock or Portal in its mechanics and unmistakable "something is not right here" tone. It was Greenlit in June and is due out for PC on March 25 from UK studio White Paper Games. [Images: White Paper Games]

Battle Chess: Game of Kings™ is Now Available on Steam Early Access!

It took 2,000 years for someone to make chess better!

The most challenging game on earth comes to life in Battle Chess. An entire medieval world at war is reflected on the checkered field.

Everyone who's ever had a knight take a pawn has seen that capture as more than one piece replacing another on the board. In player's minds, the bold knight, resplendent in his armor of silver or ebon, sallies forth and slays the foul footsoldier. Combat, mortal combat, is the heart and soul of chess, but this aspect of it can only live in the mind's eye... until now!

Lots of computer chess games capture the basics of chess. Only Battle Chess brings chess to life by combining a magnificent chess logic system with colorful, humorous, and dramatic three-dimensional animations.
