With the dust of the Xbox One launch having settled, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Spencer is ready to turn the company's attention toward the future of PC gaming.

During a recent roundtable discussion at GDC, Spencer was asked his thoughts on Valve Software, and more specifically, the upcoming Steam machine platform. "[Valve has] been the backbone for PC gaming for the last decade when you think about the work that they've done," Spencer replied.

"As the Windows company I appreciate what they've done," he added. "In a lot of ways they've focused more on PC gaming than we have, and for me that's something inside the company that we'll have a renewed focus on - Windows and PC gaming inside of Microsoft is definitely happening - you saw the DX12 demos here and you will see more from us over the summer."

Spencer failed to specify when we could expect to see more from Microsoft, though he later suggested the company is preparing for a big showing at this year's E3 conference. [Image: Microsoft]

Ne'er has a Goat faced an adventure so demanding, so puzzling, and of such extraordinary magnitude since... well, the first Escape Goat. MagicalTimeBean's Escape Goat 2 is the sequel to the 2011 puzzle-platformer, and it's breaking for freedom today on Windows PC, Mac and Linux via Steam, GOG and the Humble Store, priced at $10.

Escape Goat 2 follows the formula of the first game: Our purple caprine hero has to make his way through rooms filled with environmental perils, lots of moving parts, and puzzles that require the help of his magical mouse companion. However, the sequel ups the ante with a graphical overhaul, a new, more interconnected map system, and just to ram it home, there are 100-plus rooms compared to the original's 50 or so. Rumours that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all sat around a campfire during GDC, toasting marshmallows and singing Kumbayah are entirely false. From a distance, the merry folk troubadours might have looked like the creators and purveyors of generational gaming devices, but closer inspection revealed an entirely different picture. Microsoft were there, yes, represented by Microsoft supremo Phil Spencer (not Kirstie Allsopp’s chum). But the other figures were animatronic effigies, constructs of cloth and straw vaguely resembling PC gaming’s past and future. One of them distinctly resembled Gabe Newell and Spencer applauded his every move.

Tabletop games are pretty great, but losing pieces or having to play with faraway friends over video calls can be less than ideal. Digital adaptations with online mulitplayer solve both of these problems, as is the case with Hive, Bluepoint Games' translation of the Mensa Select board game.

In Hive, players swear allegiance to a queen and use their mess of bugs to surround the ruler of an opposing army. A turn consists of moving one bug to a new space. Each of the hexagonal pieces in play must be touching at least one other however, so no, you can't just gradually move your queen to a table corner while advancing the rest of your arsenal.

Each species has its own movement attribute, so cunning unit placement is crucial to victory. Ants can move to any open position on the outer ridge of the board, while the spider can venture exactly three spaces per turn. Grasshoppers can jump over any straight line of creepy-crawlies, but the one-space-per-turn beetles can climb on top of units from either team, allowing for a slow-but-straight shot for the opposing queen. You can also move the queen itself one space per turn.

Hive has made its nest on Steam for PC users and is currently on sale for $7.99, down from its normal price of $9.99. There's also DLC for the Pillbug, a critter that can pick up adjoining pieces and move them, regardless of which queen they serve. If your friends know better than to challenge your tactics, Hive also has AI opponents with five levels of difficulty, depending on the aptitude of your strategery. [Image: Bluelight Games]

Some games pit players against zombies. Some feature monsters. Still others go toe-to-metal-toe with robots. EnMasse Entertainment's Zombies Monsters Robots has all three. EnMasse announced the game at this year's GDC, revealing it to be a free-to-play third-person shooter and spiritual successor to iOS shooter Mercenary Ops. Unlike Mercenary Ops however, ZMR will be coming to PC, with Steam Early Access starting in May.

In ZMR, portals have opened into alternate dimensions, unleashing zombies, monsters and, yes, robots. Up to eight players band together to stop the advancing hordes across multiple game modes, including a campaign and wave-based survival. Alternatively, if you can't - or don't want to - beat 'em, join 'em by playing competitively; the game also features a 16-player head-to-head mode where teams are split into monsters vs. humans.

Polygon reports that EnMasse plans to roll out extra content after the game is launched, including "Dino Island" DLC which features an map inhabited by dinosaurs with guns on their backs. Screenshots released for the game show off plenty of other baddies as well, so place your bets on which creature will be your undoing. Personally, we vote death by merman. 2011 shooter Bulletstorm is no longer available on Steam, having disappeared from the marketplace earlier in the week. No reason has been given for the game's removal and we've reached out to publisher EA and co-developer Epic Games for comment, but suspicions are it's linked to Games for Windows Live. It's believed (but not yet confirmed) GFWL will be discontinued on July 1, and without an update that could make Bulletstorm one of a number of unplayable PC games. The game remains available on Origin at the time of writing, but that version also uses GFWL.

Co-developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, now Epic Games Poland, Bulletstorm is a first-person shooter romp in which players perform Skillshot murders with style, finesse, and variety to rack up high scores. It may sound artful and it's definitely a blast to play, but high culture it ain't. To remind you of some of the Skillshot names: Rear Entry, Nutcracker, Assplosion, and Meat Fountain. And those are just the Skillshots... [Image: EA]

The Forest is about the scavenging that comes with surviving in the woods, but it's also about avoiding a band of cannibals that would very much like to scavenge the meat from your bones. The open-world survival horror game finally has a Steam Early Access release date of May 22. and while there's no news on a final release, the $15 alpha will hopefully make for a decent starter.

Ben Falcone, the lead of four-man indie dev Endnight Games, says The Forest is inspired by films like The Descent and Cannibal Holocaust, while gaming inspirations lie in Trespasser and Minecraft. The idea in The Forest is to explore the world around you and scavenge materials to build up your base and weaponry, then defend your base from the cannibals at night - or take the fight to the enemy, if you're feeling brave.

In terms of the nitty-gritty, the game runs on Unity 4 and Oculus Rift is supported, and while it'll be single-player only on initial release, there are plans to add "some form of co-op" further down the line. [Image: Endnight Games]
