EA's Origin service is "a huge success" in its first year, according to EA senior VP of global e-commerce David DeMartini. Despite a rough start with end-user license agreement mishaps and banning some users from playing games they purchased offline, DeMartini said the service has seen 12 million downloads and counts 50 publishing partners among its catalog.

Still, he called the first year "foundational," and he's excited to add "more sticky features" to Origin. Not, like, "We're gonna pour maple syrup on the servers," but in the sense that players will see Origin more as a service (like Steam or Xbox Live) rather than yet another digital retail outlet.

"We want to put features in place where we fully take advantage of your friends lists and gameplay activities amongst all of your friends so you can compare achievements," DeMartini said. "We want you to be able to challenge your friends, and to challenge your friends to play other EA games to try and achieve things that might even be across EA games."

DeMartini insisted that EA games removed from Steam, such as Dragon Age 2, remain off the service due to Steam's rules. "We'd love to have those titles up on Steam, but unfortunately, those titles don't follow the rules that Steam has so therefore those titles are not up on Steam."

As for the future beyond those "stickiness" additions, DeMartini noted additional publishers he'd like to see join Origin. "If Activision was open-minded, we're absolutely willing to take on their great titles. Diablo III is a great game. Call of Duty will be very popular. Take-Two ... I mean there are a couple of large publishers out there that are not on Origin."

Steam has a pair of deals worth checking out right now for Napoleon: Total War and SOL: Exodus. First up, Napoleon: Total War is free to play from now until Sunday at 1PM Pacific time. If you like what you play, the game is currently half-off for $10, which is a lot of strategy for something so little -- much like Napoleon.

Also half-off today only is SOL: Exodus. The indie flight sim may not by the grandest space adventure ever digitized, but for $5 there's plenty of value in playing a genre we haven't seen much of in the last ten years.

Splice, the newest game from Auditorium developer Cipher Prime, is available today on Steam for $10, on both PC and Mac. Splice is also available as a soundtrack package deal for $13, and the soundtrack, Flight of Angels, is purchasable on its own for $5.

Coming from a studio known for its musicality, the Splice soundtrack should be a piece of microbial heaven: Immerse your senses in its auditory particulates with the video above or listen to the soundtrack on Bandcamp.

Splice takes place in the world between millimeters, under microscopes, presenting geometry and sequence puzzles in the form of microbial strands, all set to the soothing melodies of science. Splice features almost 100 strands in all, with each one presenting new challenges and riddles.

DOTA 2 BOTS
- Added Chaos Knight bot.
- Made bots more likely to unify around a Roshan attempt.
- Added bot role/laning info for all heroes, which should make for better hero and lane picks.
- On Easy and Easier, bots will no longer consider whether a target is currently slowed when determining whether to slow/stun.
- Bots are now more likely to push late-game when they are feeling indecisive.

Beatbuddy, a quirky rhythm-based action-adventure game from indie studio Threaks, already has a cozy game page on Steam - in fact, you can download a demo right now. Soon it will be available through more digital distribution channels. Reverb has announced it will publish Beatbuddy, though no exact platforms beyond Steam have been exactly mentioned.

Developer Threaks, a small German outfit, has been working on Beatbuddy since 2009. The team said it plans on bringing Beatbuddy to "a wide variety of platforms," and when those exact platforms are announced, we'll be sure to relay the info.

Splice, the latest puzzle game from the creators of Auditorium and Fractal, is now available on Steam!

Splice is an experimental and artistic puzzler. Every level ("strand") consists of a number of cells that you will need to rearrange into a target structure in several moves ("splices"). Exploration and experimentation are key in determining how the curious little cells react to each other. Predict the sequence of splices you'll have to make in order to successfully arrange each strand. Solve your way to the final strands and you'll be left with a heady sense of mental accomplishment!

Gameplay
• Bot difficulty has been adjusted. They should be a bit easier now.
Dedicated Servers:
• Added support for overriding values in gamemodes.txt via gamemodes_server.txt
- See csgo/gamemodes_server.txt.example for instructions on how to modify it and define your own map groups.
• Added support for map sidecar files, which allow mappers to distribute map-specific gamemodes.txt variables in a separate file.
- See csgo/maps/de_dust_se.kv as an example.
• Fixed mp_timelimit not working properly when mp_maxrounds was set to 0.

UI
• net_graph has several changes that will allow players to better see values they (or the server operator) have configured incorrectly.
- The most important difference is that the game tick rate is now shown in the bottom left, which is where sv: (server fps) used to be. Server fps is not really a useful metric for players except when it is below the tick rate (indicating the server is overloaded). Server FPS above the tick rate is meaningless.
- The cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate rate are now labeled as up: and cmd:, respectively. There is now color coding added to some of the values to indicate out of band values. If cmdrate or updaterate are set above the tick rate (requires a server operator to override the sv_maxcmdrate and sv_maxupdaterate), these values are shown in red. For optimal play experience, these values should match the server tick rate, which is the default behavior unless a server operator has overridden convars.
- Fixed formatting so that the right aligned values are correctly aligned and text doesnt shift and jump as displayed values change.
• A banner element has been added to the Match Scoreboard to better convey Win, Lose, and Draw match results.
• Hint text has been added to the bottom of the Loading screen.
• Updated the Armor icon next to the Armor meter to include the Helmet when purchased.
• Updated the dominated/dominating/revenge icons for freeze panel, mini-scoreboard, and death notices.
• Updates to the Arms Race UI:
- Now when someone reaches the Gold Knife level, the HUD shows a message in the chat text, displays an alert, and plays a sound effect.

- The Arms Race weapon progression HUD element in the lower right now properly displays the data for the person you are spectating.
• In Casual and Competitive modes, the weapon inventory in the lower right of the HUD displays the spectated players information now.
• Voting UI updates:
- Fixed the panel going away right after you cast a vote or saw a vote be cast as a client.
- The vote panel has been made smaller and positioned so it doesn't cover other UI elements.
- After you cast a vote, the game no longer shows the text instructing you to press F1/F2 to vote.
- The Vote to Surrender option has been removed. Voting to Restart serves the same purpose.
- When an attempt to vote fails because it had already failed recently, the error message is now more descriptive about what's going on.
- If a player casts a vote when another vote is already in progress, they get a message letting them know.
- If there are no players or maps that can be voted on when you try to cast a vote, those categories are disabled in the UI.
- The vote panel now animates.
- Added the proper sounds to the voting events.
- A fix was made to a vote you cast in a single player game automatically failing.
- Fixed the map you are currently playing displaying in the vote UI as "undefined".
- Updated the size, look and translucency of the vote panel.
- Added the ability to change the next map in the map list which overrides the next map in the mapgroup.
- Changed the text, "Restart the map?" to "Restart the match?"
- Voting for the same map you are playing as the next map will extend it and just restart the map instead of loading.
- Fixed voting panel displaying during the freeze cam screenshot.
- Fixed votes for a certain category failing if they had failed previously but had a different subcategory (for example, a vote failed for kicking player A wouldn't let anyone vote to kick player B)

UI
- Selecting "Equip" on an item in the backpack now flips to the loadout and automatically does the equipping for you.
- Added support for watching replays via URL. For example, "dota2://dota2://matchid=15478&matchtime=300" will go directly to five minutes into match 15478.
- Added button in replay panel to copy an URL into the clipboard that can be used to get back to that point in that replay.
- Added Hall of Fame trophies to the bases. Clicking on them will display the winning teams of The International.

DOTA 2 BOTS
- Made bots not leave a gank if they currently have the ability to reincarnate and allies are still attacking.
- Fixed bug where bots would pick their heroes before humans locked in their picks.
