After the Wii successor, Wii U, was revealed this morning, Nintendo detailed two unique functions of the giant touchscreen controller: video calls and web browsing. Internet and the equivalent of Apple's FaceTime on Nintendo hardware? We're just as shocked as you are. We'll be sure to update you with more information as it comes in.

During Nintendo's E3 2011 press conference, president Reggie Fils-Aime took to the stage and confirmed that Super Mario 3D, the 3DS title briefly teased back at GDC, would launch before year's end. Also, the tanooki suit is back -- gameplay footage showed a blend of 2D and 3D gameplay, highly reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy. It makes sense, since the same team is handling the 3DS game.

MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online may have gone free to play, but that doesn’t mean Turbine have to stop making pay-for expansion packs. The third, Rise of Isengard, now has a date- September 27th. It’ll bring with it three new areas (Isengard, Dunlan and the Gap of Rohan), a level cap increase up to 75, a new 24 player raid and more.

I’m continually impressed by the deviousness of games developers. Check this out: As an extra bonus if you buy Rise of Isengard now, you’re immediately granted access to in-game benefits ranging from a 25% XP boost to new mounts. Genius. I’m also not sure I’ve ever seen Base, Heroic and Legendary editions of an expansion pack before. A trailer as well as a full list of both Rise of Isengard’s features and the pre-order benefits awaits after the jump.(more…)

Do you know what Nintendo's successor to the Wii will be called? No? Us neither. That's embarrassing too, because we're supposed to have the scoop on stuff like this.

But beginning at 9 a.m. PDT/12 p.m. EDT, we're finally going to know what Mario and Co. have planned for the year to come. Let's go!

The most arresting E3 trailer for me so far is the new’un for From Dust, the Populous-esque game from Another World/Out Of This World creator Eric Chahi. It seems to take the god game ball dropped by Lionhead/Bullfrog and run with it to about a hundred strange and wonderful places. I have no idea how any of these remarkable world-reshaping powers work in practice, but I almost don’t care. I’m simply happy enough to watch it, goggle-eyed and dreaming fondly of the things only video games can do.(more…)

AND YET IT STILL COMES. The next offering from the infinite wheel of trailers is BIS’s Arma 3. They’ve gone for the live-action teaser trailer approach with this one, and something of a mood piece rather than giving much away about the game. I’ve attempted to ameliorate this by including a second, fan-made video composed of all the screenshots to date stitched together and given an ominous soundtrack.(more…)

In an email sent to its "Faithful" fan mailing list, Atlus revealed plans to localize SNK's PS3/Xbox 360 fighting game The King of Fighters XIII, for a North American release "this holiday season."

Originally released last year in Japan, the latest release in SNK's fighting dynasty includes over 30 characters, a significant step up from the 20 included in the last game. "Back by popular demand, your favorite fighters rejoin the roster including K', Vice, Kula, Maxima and more," the website says, in front of an image of Mai, Yuri, and King -- none of whom appeared in KOF XII. In addition, the sequel promises a "rebuilt online mode" for enhanced stability.

Atlus linked to Amazon's pre-order pages on the website, both of which have KOF XIII arriving in October for $50. That's not exactly as trustworthy as a royal decree, but it's encouraging.

We have a first proper glimpse of the co-operative Star Trek co-op action game! As stated, it’s firmly in the vein of the JJ Abrams reboot of the series, featuring plenty of lithe young things hurtling through vacuums and leaping out of the way of explosions. I expect I already know the answer to this, but to any physicists reading this- is that TV trope of people clinging onto rails and the like to prevent being sucked out into space even remotely plausible? And if not, why not?(more…)

Considering the embarrassing regularity and bone-smashing severity with which the riders are ejected from their motorcycles, Trials might as well have been called ExitBike. The tricky test of speed, momentum and balance is set to return to Xbox Live Arcade this year with Trials Evolution, a sequel to two-million seller Trials HD.

Finnish developer Redlynx claims that it took its time in "carefully planning and developing" the follow-up before making today's announcement. "We listened carefully to all the feedback we received from the previous game and added it to our own vision of what the ultimate Trials game could be, coming up with a gamer's wish list of must-play features," said creative director Antti Ilvessuo.

Judging by the teaser trailer posted after the break, it seems gamers no longer want to be alone in leaning just a little too far over the handle bars.

We’re still agonisingly denied a look at Hitman 5, aka Hitman: Absolution, in as-it-plays action, but at least we’ve got some raaaawk-soundtracked, stylised pre-rendered kill sequences and scene-setting to stare at. It also features a sort-of naked lady, but you can’t really see anything, but if you’re reading this in a place where an image of a sort-of naked lady but of whom you can’t really see anything would cause you trouble, like a nunnery or on a projector in a primary school classroom, you probably shouldn’t carry on.(more…)

Though Microsoft didn't deign to mention Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online at its E3 press conference, Capcom released a new trailer for the XBLA title anyway. This is, in fact, the first time we've seen this version of the game, ever, even though it was announced a year ago.

The video shows what pretty much looks like Street Fighter III: Third Strike ... but the trailer reveals features like GGPO online and YouTube sharing. There's also a lot of footage of people being thrown.

The E3 trailer for Dust 514 has been deployed by the PlayStation Blog, giving us a glimpse at the now PS3 exclusive shooter. Dust 514 is a persistent shooter, where the universe goes on through your absence and impacts EVE Online on the PC/Mac platforms.

This is achieved through territorial control over planets -- your performance dynamically shifts the power balance on these worlds, affecting the pilots in EVE Online. But it goes both ways: events in EVE Online can affect the make-up of any particular world.

On top of that, Dust 514 will have a largely similar economy of that in EVE Online, employing virtual goods and a single person overseer responsible for monitoring the game's economy. And when it comes to expansions, CCP promises free expansion packs, development of which will be fueled by players spending real world money in-game.

Hit the jump for the E3 trailer, and check out PlayStation Blog for more from the game's community manager, James Egan.

Heretics! Blood Letters! Chaos Space Marines! And Orks. Always with the Orks. (The Orks need their own game, really: they get such a bad rap, treated as idiots and fodder). Here’s the Chaos-centric E3 trailer for Space Marine, a game I am very much looking forward too, albeit with the concern that the lone hero thingy might not entirely sit well my own vision of Space Marineyness. Still, I love the 40K universe as much as any poorly-shaven man of my generation, so the opportunity to get all first-person on it makes me tremble like a tiny rabbit.(more…)
