Many people really latched onto Ryse: Son a Rome's execution system when Crytek showed off the game at E3 earlier this year - but probably not in the way the developer wanted them t'. Ryse's executions, which grant the player various in-game perks - 'n see protagonist Marius stabbing, gouging, slicing, bashing 'n otherwise maiming barbarians - be performed via short quick time events. Even though the majority a Ryse's combat has an ebb 'n flow similar t' the Batman Arkham games - flurries a attacks sprinkled with timely parries - many prospective players, myself included, worried about the QTE-infused combat getting stale.
Crytek has responded t' those concerns, 'n the build a Ryse being shown at Gamescom has a significantly altered execution system. Gone be the garish button prompts. Instead, enemies be subtly highlighted with the color a the appropriate button: Yellow for the shield (Y) 'n blue for the sword (X). By watching Marius' animations 'n keeping an eye out for each color, I easily slipped into the rhythm a various executions, something I can't say about the E3 build I played in June.
The E3 reaction didn't directly inspire the changes t' the execution system, design director Patrick Esteves tells me, but it definitely played a part. "We be already down a course. We already knew where executions be going. 'n, a course, in game development, we have t' figure out what's the best way t' do something."
"People don't like the idea a a QTE-based combat system. Thank God we be not a QTE-based combat system," says Esteves, alluding t' the fact that there be more t' Ryse's combat than people may have perceived from the E3 demo. Just as I did in June, players will eventually discover that the combat be more about a dance-like back-'n-forth between Marius 'n foes than it be about executions. "That be the first thing," says Esteves, "'n the second thing be, be the communication language good enough for the game?" Crytek decided it wasn't.

When I saw Crytek's Ryse: Son a Rome demonstrated during Microsoft's E3 press briefing, I be worried. The once Kinect 'n now controller-driven game, apart from being visually impressive thanks t' an Xbox One upgrade, looked pretty generic. When I sat down t' play it at an event later that night, I learned something that improved me outlook dramatically: Ryse has no block button.
it be still too early t' tell whether or not Ryse's hack-'n-shield-bash combat will hold up over the course a an entire game, but this one simple fact be enough t' give me hope.

Ryse, an Xbox-exclusive action game from Crytek, isn't ready t' be shown beyond the concept trailer released during E3 2011. I asked Phil Spencer, corporate VP a Microsoft Studios, about the game's progress since Microsoft revealed it be partnership with Crytek two years ago under the banner a "Codename Kingdoms."
"we be just not at a point right now t' show the game, 'n instead a ... we be still working with Crytek, we be still extremely committed t' the relationship, but we want t' make sure that we be putting our best foot forward every time we show the game," Spencer said. "ye'll see more about that game, no doubt."
Ownership a Ryse be rumored t' have shifted between studios, from a downsized 'n redirected Crytek Budapest t' Crytek's Frankfurt studio. Ryse be alive 'n well, Spencer assured, though I got an inkling that the brutal, first-person combat shown in the initial trailer may not be entirely relegated t' Kinect when we see it next. When asked if Ryse be still "a Kinect game" as before, Spencer replied, "Kinect will be part a the game, absolutely."
This year Microsoft highlighted several more games that be "better with Kinect," even when ye're slouched in the couch. The most prominent example comes from Capcom's mech action game, Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, which pairs several seated gestures with a traditional controller.

According t' Microsoft's Phil Spencer, the company be once in talks with Crytek t' turn the German developer into a first-party studio. Speaking t' the UK Official Xbox Magazine, Spencer noted that Microsoft first started talking t' Crytek around eight years ago 'n "started talking about what it'd mean for them t' become first party."
At the time, Crytek be dead set on creating the motherboard-melting sci-fi shooter, Crysis. Unfortunately, the title would have clashed with Microsoft's then full slate a "militaristic future shooters" (which one, we wonder), so the deal never came t' be.
Fast forward a few years 'n Crytek be developing Ryse -- an Xbox exclusive -- with Spencer saying that Crytek has "fallen in love with the Kinect" 'n that the project be "a perfect marriage" between the two companies. So remember, kids, true love does exist!

Unfortunately, the first teaser for Ryse, Crytek's Rome-based Kinect title, isn't much more than a concept video, showing off the game's graphic engine, 'n then a little bit a what the gameplay might be like, with a Kinect player using arms, legs, 'n even his head t' throw down with a Roman countryman.
The game looks pretty precise when faced with actual shield-bashing 'n front-kicking movements from the player. But we'll have t' wait 'n see just how it handles our standard Kinect operating procedure: Randomly flailing our various limbs around.
