PlayStation Vita Message Board older than one year ago

Pre-orders are up for PlayStation's "Day 1 Digital" promotion. That news applies to you if you have Plus and want to save money on downloads of Dishonored, Doom 3 BFG, NBA 2K13, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted ... and you can reconcile the silliness of pre-ordering a downloadable game.

Even before Day 1 Digital officially starts, there are some full retail games available digitally, including FIFA 13 and Dead or Alive 5, and older games Starhawk and Mirror's Edge.

Along with that stuff is way too much quality PSN-exclusive material, including Tokyo Jungle and Hell Yeah, both of which were reviewed favorably by Joystiq (in case you missed them!), along with Marvel vs. Capcom Origins, One Piece Pirate Warriors, and more.

Our pals over at Engadget recently interviewed John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles. Koller revealed that "almost all" PS Vita owners also own a PS3.

"You look at the Vita consumer and a very high percentage - almost all of them - own a PS3," Koller told Engadget. The interview focused on Nintendo's Wii U, which offers functionality similar to the compatibility between PS3 and PS Vita - like using the PS Vita as a tablet controller. Koller said that Sony's not really into offering the functionality stock across all games. It has to be the right content.

"We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily," he said. "It's dependent on the content. So we need to make sure the content isn't force fed. And, to us, making sure that the gamer receives the right type of experience is what's most important. So we're gonna pick our spots, but that technology does certainly exist here."

As suspected, Grand Theft Auto 3 is one of this week's PlayStation Network releases. The game first appeared on the Asia PlayStation site last week, scheduled to come to PSN on September 25, and lo, Sony made it so. Sony actually intended to release Rockstar's 2001 classic earlier this year, but hit a delay after a licensing issue with the soundtrack.

Mirror's Edge is also doubly confirmed for release tomorrow, after Sony dropped news of its arrival via last week's PlayStation Blogcast. Neither game has a price yet. Also on the way are One Piece: Pirate Warriors, Tokyo Jungle, Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins, Starhawk, Realms of Ancient War, (the brilliantly named) Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, Table Ice Hockey (for Vita), Turnabout (PSOne), and Final Fantasy III (for PSP.)

If you like your anthologies digital and downloadable, prepare for smiles tomorrow at the prospect of the Infamous and Ratchet and Clank collections becoming available on PSN, because they will. If not so much, why not prepare for smiles anyway?

At the Tokyo Game Show this year, we stopped to chat with Hiroshi Kawano, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, about his company's future. In part one (above), we ask about how Sony plans to push the PlayStation Vita, which was a big focus of the company's press conference this year (both at TGS and E3). We also take a second to ask about the latest Hatsune Miku game, which boosted Vita sales by over 300 percent when it launched earlier this month.

In the second part of the interview, Kawano discusses social games. Social games are huge in Japan right now, so where does Sony - a company busy trying to sell dedicated gaming hardware - fit into a market steadily shifting toward mobile phones and tables? Find out after the break.

Nothing is quite as adept at stealing your precious free time like video games. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is making a grab for your life minutes when it launches on February 5, simultaneously on the PS Vita and PS3.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will also be available as a PSN download on February 5 - purchasing the PS3 version through retailers or PSN will automatically give you the PS Vita version free, and both are cross-play compatible, the PlayStation Blog reports.

Our brothers and sisters across the pond will need to wait a little longer for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. It will launch in Europe sometime in March across both PS3 and PS Vita, and the PSN version will also be available there day-and-date with the boxed retail versions. Ain't technology grand?

It doesn't take much to create the ultimate version of Vlambeer's Super Crate Box. It needs the gameplay - including responsive controls - of the PC/Mac original, and the pick-up-and-play portability of the iOS release.

By default, the PlayStation Mobile release running on a PlayStation Vita is the best version, simply because it meets those conditions. The game feels just like it always did on PC, with excellent use of the Vita's d-pad or analog stick to move your little guy, but is portable.

I considered writing a longer preview, but there's not much you need to know. It's Super Crate Box, but portable, with buttons. Provided you're playing on a Vita or another PlayStation Certified device with controls - like a Wikipad or an Xperia Play, that is. It'll work on all the other PlayStation Certified devices, but with touch controls.

Publishing a game on PlayStation Mobile will be easier than usual, thanks to an initiative by Sony. Developer relations exec Shane Bettenhausen revealed during a Fantastic Arcade panel that Sony has collaborated with ratings boards for a simpler method of ratings. "ESRB lite, PEGI lite, CERO lite," he called it.

Under the new system, developers are able to self-report content by checking spaces on a form. That saves time and overhead required for ratings boards to check the content manually. It also means that games on PS Mobile are subject to the same content restrictions as console games - and not, say, at the mercy of Apple.

Earlier today, we had a chance to get our grubby little mitts on the PlayStation Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken during a Capcom event held concurrently with the Tokyo Game Show. Specifically, we pit the Vita version against the PlayStation 3 version to not only test the port's crossplay functionality, but to also determine which is superior: Bear, or Robot Chainsaw Lady?

A promotional smartphone app lets you play a minigame using ... the package for LittleBigPlanet Vita. The "PlayStation Official App" allows European Vita fans to scan the cover of the game, whether in a store or at home, and then play "a fantastic mini-game with you controlling the hero of the creative adventure series, Sackboy."

You can also watch a trailer, and place virtual Sackboys in photos. Really, this is more of a promotional app than a standalone game experience, but at least it's a novel promotion! We have only one question: why is this a phone thing instead of a Vita AR app?

Namco Bandai is planning a simultaneous PlayStation Vita and PSP debut for God Eater 2, a sequel that promises faster, more strategic battles and even larger divine delicacies (see: huge monsters) than before.

The action RPG will feature mixed-system adhoc multiplayer and the same content across both versions, though the PlayStation Vita will enable superior graphics. God Eater 2 is expected in Japan sometime during 2013. The previous game, dubbed God Eater Burst in America and Europe, was released in 2011.

Tecmo Koei has revealed a new way to feed your need to slash demons into pieces: a dark fantasy, samurai action title dubbed Toukiden for the PlayStation Vita and PSP.

Developed by Omega Force, the team behind the Warriors franchise, Toukiden will launch sometime in 2013. The new title will have some cross-platform play between both handheld devices.

The new intellectual property was revealed today during Sony's TGS 2012 keynote. A brief trailer for the game revealed a female protagonist in slicing giant spiders and ogres in a feudal Japan-style world setting - which leads us to believe it's based on a true story.

The digital version for Borderlands 2 on the PSN highlights this week's content dump, available as a download alongside its physical Blu-Ray cousin starting today. Gearbox Software's next installment in the gun grab-em-up is accompanied by Zuma's Revenge and the HD revival of Jet Set Radio.

EA Tiburon detailed the inclusion of fantasy drafts for online Connected Careers franchises for Madden 13 in a recent blog. The feature, which now allows players to run a 54-round fantasy draft when starting an online franchise-style league, was not initially included in the game's feature set, much to the dismay of many players.

EA Tiburon is "looking into adding similar functionality into offline Connected Careers in the future," so the fantasy draft feature is currently locked to online Connected Careers leagues, which can still be played as a single-player franchise.

Sony is allowing UK fans to vote on cover candidates that will appear on "special, high-gloss sleeves" of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Sony is working with UK retailer Game for the cover vote.

Fans have ten characters to choose from: Heihachi Mishima, Sackboy, Radec, Ratchet and Clank, Parappa the Rappa, Kratos, Jak and Daxter, Nathan Drake, Big Daddy and Cole McGrath. Voting takes place on the PlayStation All-Stars Facebook page; clicking "Like" on a character's image adds your vote to his visage.

Let's talk about LittleBigPlanet Vita, Double Dragon, Metal Gear, and Candy Corn Oreos.

The Vita's sales pitch - "console-like" games in a mobile device - mirrors that of the PSP when it first launched, admits John Koller, Sony Marketing VP for handhelds and consoles. The Vita, however, has learned from the PSP's failures.

"The issue that happened with PSP is we got overrun with ports," Koller tells Gamasutra. "It became very difficult for us to define what made PSP unique. The content development became a bit unstructured or decentralized, in that we got a lot of content that was on PlayStation 2 and got thrown over to the handheld."

Sony is recommending publishers create unique content for the Vita, citing Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation or Activision with Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, rather than ports.

"The messaging is similar [between PSP and PS Vita], but I think the output is going to be quite different," Koller says.
