United Front's open-world action game, Sleeping Dogs, is now available for free to PlayStation Plus members as part of Instant Game Collection.

Papo & Yo is available for $9 this week (or $12 if you want the soundtrack tossed in), while Retro City Rampage is down to $7.50. Fatal Frame 2 joins the PS2 Classics list, and a multiplayer demo for Fuse teases Insomniac's latest shooter before its launch later this month. Sony Santa Monica is working with artist Richard Hogg and Frobisher Says! developer Honeyslug to produce Hohokum, an upcoming title for the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PS Vita.

Hogg describes Hohokum as a "whimsical colorful game with an emphasis on playful exploration and creativity." Players control a wormish, kite-like flying creature as they navigate a virtual playground and ferry around its inhabitants. It resembles Keita Takahashi's Noby Noby Boy in premise, and Hogg notes that the experience is free from the "usual pressures" common to video games, such as persistent hand-holding and failure states.

Hohokum was named as a finalist in the Excellence in Visual Arts category of 2011's Independent Games Festival. Hogg expects the game to launch in 2014.

The Star Wars-themed pinball tables that found their way to Zen Studios' myriad pinball games last February will be released as a standalone product for PlayStation 3 and Vita next week. Star Wars Pinball will include the Star Wars Episode V, Boba Fett and Clone Wars tables previously seen in Zen Pinball 2, et al.

Players can choose to contribute their high scores to either the Galactic Empire or Rebel Alliance, with the game's interface changing dynamically depending on the global balance of power. The game will be Cross-Buy enabled at $9.99/€9.99, though anyone who already owns these tables in Zen Pinball 2 can download the new solo app for free. Likewise, anyone that purchases Star Wars Pinball will unlock the equivalent tables in Zen Pinball 2.

Soul Sacrifice feels like a game designed by somebody in a bad mood. This exclusive for Sony’s handheld is all about using your own pain—or the agony of others—for power. Grim? Sure. But, it’s also the best reason I’ve had in months to keep my Vita charged and in my bag. So, the bad mood thing: it’s the most logical conclusion I’ve been able to come to while playing this exclusive for Sony’s handheld. Soul Sacrifice feels like the design of a person annoyed at all the political correctness and hypocrisy that runs through the modern age. That person is most likely Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, since the game is the product of his Comcept design studio. "People will prey on each other if they can get away with it," I can picture him saying. "I will make a game that revels in that truth." For something premised on such a nihilistic view on human nature, Soul Sacrifice feels damn good. Players control a trapped sorcerer who gets to relive a mysterious past thanks to a talking necromantic tome named Librom, which holds the life story of a powerful, time-lost mage. The ultimate goal of the game is to jump into that wizard’s battles and earn enough magical acumen to defeat an immortal tyrant named Magusar. Every bite-sized battle leaves you with spells, essences or items that you can fuse with each other. What you get as end-of-mission loot changes depending on the rank you earn after the fighting’s done. You’ll get to choose from melee weapons, mines, long-distance attacks and a whole lot more to take down the smaller enemies and larger Archfiends. The creature designs are truly grotesque and there’s a ton of lore—all of it embedded with cryptic hints—in Librom’s pages about the legends, beasts and lands that you’ll encounter in Soul Sacrifice, too. The game’s tone fuses slightly cheesy Evil Dead tones with a deadly serious atmosphere that keeps jostling you into a self-serving ruthlessness. You’ll periodically have to kill a partner to build up your own powers in a cursed right arm, where their knowledge, skills and personalities will still linger in your skull. It’s refreshing how Soul Sacrifice upends the typical understanding of magic-wielding protagonists. Forget noble wizards like Gandalf the Grey. These spellcasters kill wantonly, we're told, and it's probably to justify the game's mechanics. When a foe is defeated, you get a choice of Save or Sacrifice with the life energy they leave behind. The former buffs your life bar (for defense), the latter your magic reserves (for attacks). You can align your right arm to be either Divine—where it has more life energy than magic—or Dark, where it’s the opposite. You’ll be able to carve passive power-ups called sigils into your right arm and some will have increased benefit depending on whether your right arm is Dark or Divine. This constant reconfiguring of the balance between your life and magic bars—along with the mixing and matching of life essences, soul essences, sigils of multiple stripes and spell fusions—makes SS feel uniquely alive and intricate. It really feels like you’re holding the reins of a magical ecosystem in the palm of your hand. In Soul Sacrifice, spells are called Offerings (as in sacrificial offerings). They can be exhausted during a mission, meaning that you'll lose a power you love if you spam it without strategy. There can be ways to resuscitate an offering—either by sacrificing lesser foes for energy or finding places seeded with magic in the environment— but none of them are easy when you're under attack. Soul Sacrifice feels most promising in the way it lets you mix and match abilities to come up with a unique palette of attack options. You harvest magic items and mystical essences during your battles and can craft them into more powerful combinations. Players will wind up with huge inventories but Soul Sacrifice gives you some easy ways to manage all the loot. When fusing abilities, you can filter them according to their essences—whether evasive, fire/ice, health—making it easier to find the option you want among the dozens (hundreds?) of abilities. Touch input is thankfully minimal and the most significant use of it in gameplay is for the Black Rites, which are super-attacks that severely degrade your defense. The game’s arenas are bigger than you'd expect and have a nice variation of visual styles. One level looked Venetian while another places you in a ruined Baroque cathedral. Running around the arenas quickly reveals that there are pick-ups and quick-use weapons embedded into the environments, making you appreciate the aesthetics even more. These points aren’t signaled by glowing outlines either. But when you find them using the alternate Mind’s Eye viewing filter, they'll yield essential but temporary gear like fireproof armor, do things like renew spell strength or heal you back to full strength. When it comes to multiplayer, you’d have to be blind to ignore the elements of Capcom’s Monster Hunter series and the Dark Souls games floating in Soul Sacrifice's veins. Like the former, Soul Sacrifice gathers players together to track and kill giant magical creatures and, like the latter, players can meddle with or undermine each other’s efforts. But, it’s that aforementioned ruthlessness that makes Soul Sacrifice feel like something more than an opportunistic mutation of other games’ mechanics. Sometimes, the best way to win a fight will be to sacrifice another player, whether they want it or not. They—or you—can still influence the outcome by touching the Vita screen to amp ally attacks or degrade enemy defense. Soul Sacrifice’s multiplayer is really fun, though. The experience gets doled out in short rounds but you all feel bound together by the threat of a giant boss who whupped your individual butts in single-player. Once you jump online, single-player feels like research bed for multiplayer. When you know a weakness to one of Soul Sacrifice's archfiends and can share it, that's a great feeling. And when I was downed and offered myself up for sacrifice, I swelled at being able to deliver the killing blow with my energy. It feels noble when you’re sacrificed after asking but the opposite is true when you get sacrificed after asking to be saved. Finding yourself taken out of the action unceremoniously and used for expedience makes a body feel mighty impotent. It’s critical to note that Soul Sacrfice passed the all-important commuting test, too. I was able to bang out one of the easier boss fights, sort my loot and craft new offerings/weapons during several quick subway rides during my time with the game. It’s that right-size design that makes the game feel like a great example of what the Vita is supposed to deliver: large-scale experience that you can take with you. Most mobile game experiences aren’t this involved. I can’t stop going back to Soul Sacrifice: it’s quick, it’s deep and it’s satisfying. Yes, people will stab me in the back. But even that feels oddly rewarding.

The PlayStation Network will launch an "Indie Games" section for the PlayStation Store later today as part of the standard Tuesday update.

"This category builds on the support that PlayStation has offered independent developers in the effort to highlight some of the most unique gaming experiences on PlayStation platforms," notes the PlayStation Blog. "This new category will house all of our latest indie titles in one convenient place."

Clarifying some odd wording on the PlayStation Blog, Gamasutra has confirmed that Indie games will reside in both the normal section of the PSN store and this new indies section in Europe. We've confirmed with a representative for Sony America that the plan is to have indie games found in both sections in North America, as well.

PlayStation Plus members can snag Sleeping Dogs, Pinball Arcade and Knytt Underground for free on the PS3 this May - for standard PSN users, Sleeping Dogs runs $50, Pinball Arcade is $10 and Knytt Underground is $15. Knytt and Pinball Arcade are Cross-Buy enabled, meaning a purchase on PS3 enables that game on Vita, and vice-versa.

Also free on Vita for Plus members in May is Germinator ($10 standard) and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend ($25 standard). Mother, May you get a handful of great games for free? Yes, you May.

Sleeping Dogs is free for Plus members starting tomorrow, May 7, along with a 25 percent Plus discount on Papo & Yo on PS3, making that game $9.

If you've been wondering what Draco Malfoy's been up to since his Hogwarts days, Dragon's Crown has the answer. He's grown his hair out and broadened his repertoire in the upcoming PS3/Vita beat-em-up, but he's clearly gone overboard on the bleach.

Adam Heart and developer Iron Galaxy Studios have revealed another featured character in their two-button, no-joystick 2D fighter parody Divekick, though this particular addition requires players to shoulder a major tradeoff during battle.

"Jefailey," a character poking fun at fighting game tournament organizer Alex Jebailey, boasts a unique "disqualification" projectile move, in addition to the game's standard repertoire of instant-kill attacks. The tradeoff? Jefailey's head grows in size after winning a round, making him an increasingly vulnerable target over the duration of the match.

It's worth noting that Divekick features a concussion mechanic, and if any character loses a round by being kicked in the head, they'll start off the next round in a dizzied state. Jefailey, then, seems like a character for risk-takers, or for those who think that their opponents will be distracted by his massive noggin.

Iron Galaxy reveals new Divekick characters every Monday via livestream. Divekick is slated for release this summer for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PC.

Sound Shapes, Queasy Games's synesthetic platformer, gets another batch of DLC on May 14 in North America, May 15 in Europe. While Queasy's announcement was coy, PSNStores says it's confirmed the DLC comprises two sound packs: one 1980s-themed, one dubstep.

As PSNStores notes, the two DLCs packs accidentally appeared in a PS Store update for Asia back in March, and their trophies are listed too. The 80s are back in style and dubstep isn't going away anytime soon, so the timing looks metronomic for some new beats.

PlayStation Plus breaches the Eastern crime zone of Sleeping Dogs in North America on May 7. As revealed on this week's PlayStation Blogcast, PS Plus subscribers get express tickets for some murder on the Orient in next week's store update.

Also joining the Instant Game Collection in May are Pinball Arcade on the PS3, which comes with the Tales of the Arabian Nights, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Black Hole, and Theater of Magic tables, as well as subterranean side-scroller Knytt Underground and enhanced fighter BlazBlue: Contiuum Shift Extend, both for the PS3 and Vita.

These new trailers for Dragon's Crown's Fighter and Sorceress classes are in English, which is a change from the predominantly Japanese footage we've seen so far, but honestly trailers for this game could be in Esperanto and you'd still be able to get the gist of what's going down: Skeleton murder.

The rise of smartphones and mobile gaming means that there’s also been a rise of bathroom gaming. (Don’t act like you don’t do it.) But there hasn’t been an uptick in games about bathrooms. If you’ve been waiting for one, Men’s Room Mayhem offers you some relief. MRM looks like it’s going to be fairly standard time management game in the mode of genre classic Diner Dash. BUt it does make me think about the unspoken tensions of the shared latrine. We all have things that we like to happen—and not happen—when we’re answering nature’s call. Me, I have a strict “no talking in public bathrooms” rule. It means I’m a terse and sometimes even visibly annoyed conversationalist if you try to chat me up in the loo, even if we’re the best, oldest friends. So I really hope there’s no talking in Men’s Room Mayhem. What I find most ironic about MRM showing up on the Vita is the fact that Sony’s portable isn’t the best gaming device for toilet gaming. Not terribly pocketable and some games require both hands. Let’s hope Men’s Room Mayhem takes on these important issues in the game. Wash Your Hands! On the surface, Thomas Was Alone is generally unremarkable. It breaks platforming mechanics down to their most basic levels, quite literally, replacing characters with colored rectangles and environments with precarious arrangements of black rectangles. To reiterate: Thomas Was Alone is a platformer starring a cast of little, colored blocks.

What's amazing is that, thanks to the a tiny injection of story and a bit of good writing, you may actually start to care about them.

Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 have been rated for PlayStation devices by the ESRB, implying that the two classic crime games are on the way to the PlayStation Network. Yup, if you're as surprised as we are this hadn't happened already, join us in the boat.

Curiously, rumors of GTA and GTA 2 coming to PSN go all the way back to February 2008, when Official PlayStation Magazine first heard whispers. The other rumored game from that same article, Street Fighter Alpha, arrived in August 2008. GTA certainly took its time.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon lights up this week's hefty PlayStation content dump, available as a PS3 download alongside Poker Night 2, Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut, Zombie Tycoon 2 (PS Vita cross-buy; free on PS Plus) and Ninja Sigma 2. On the PS Vita side, Keiji Inafune's Soul Sacrifice sets out for role-playing adventure.

Soul Sacrifice wants you to embrace the power of mortality. Because nothing says 'I want to beat this goddamn boss' like sucking the soul energy out of your girlfriend's body so you can use it to trigger a massive magical attack. Yeah, it's that kind of game. Out today, the new game from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune invites you to come to terms with the eventual end of your own life—and that of your friends. Soul Sacrifice revolves around a trapped sorcerer trying to amass enough power to defeat an evil magician who rules the world. The Vita exclusive is a many-layered thing, with magical artifacts, eldritch body art and crafted items that you'll use to battle the beasties of the game's fantasy universe. Soul Sacrifice is a big game on a small system and, while I'm still working on having a full review up soon, the most interesting thing about the game is how it uses death. Sure, killing things is a commonplace activity in video games, but here it drives the gameplay mechanics at various levels of depth. Your mystical avatar isn't limited to just doing away with enemies in the game. He or she can also dispatch allies or even his or her own self in order to keep the fight against evil going. Here's a rundown of how passing away can be a good thing in Soul Sacrifice. Sacrifice an Enemy Each time you defeat an antagonist in combat, you're given the choice to either save their soul or sacrifice it. Choose the former option and the cat that was home to evil spirits walks away peacefully, leaving you with energy to bolster your health stats. If you sacrifice the critter, then you get juice for your offense. The nature of your character's energy balance determines whether you get the best out of certain items and skills. Killing minor fiends is the major way that you'll be gathering XP in the game, so get ready to answer a life-or-death question every time you overcome a foe. Sacrifice an Ally Like lots of co-op or multiplayer games, Soul Sacrifice has players reviving their partners when they screw things up in combat. If you decide to save them, they'll dust themselves off and keeping right on fighting as if nothing ever happened. But if you sacrifice them, a powerful spell gets unleashed. That spell mutilates the ally's body so that black, spiny tendrils shoot out of it and destroy most everything on the map. Once that spell is cast, those partners will have shuffled off this mortal coil. Harsh as this tactic may seem, you can reverse the back-stabbing by using the game's precious Lacrima resource. So, if you need their particular set of powers in your quest to take out a giant, oozing blob or grotesque harpy, they'll be there after you pay the price for reviving them. Sacrifice Yourself There's two ways that self-murder happens in Soul Sacrifice. If you wind up clinging to in one of the big arenas, you can have an ally who's still alive sacrifice your soul to help beat an enemy. Or, you can choose death on your own. Either way, you'll become a spirit after you die. Spirits can watch and influence the action on screen by tapping on the glowing auras that surround enemy and ally. Tapping on the outline of a friendly character raises his attack strength while touching the part of the screen with an enemy lowers that creature's defense. Death is omnipresent in Soul Sacrifice. Innocent people and the guilty alike will meet their ends at your hands. And, as grim as it is, death can be a tool like anything else. Soul Sacrifice makes turning the end of another being's life into an extension of your own—or vice versa—a lot more engaging than in most other video games. Gaijinworks is gearing up to launch a localized version of Acquire's PSP dungeon-crawling RPG Class of Heroes 2, and has opened preorders for a physical UMD edition that also includes a downloadable copy of the game.

For $36.99, buyers will receive a digital voucher for Class of Heroes 2 once it hits the PlayStation Network next month. A boxed physical version will be shipped to preorder customers an estimated 4-8 weeks after preorders close on May 8th.

Published in partnership with MonkeyPaw Games, Class of Heroes 2 is a first-person, Wizardry-like dungeon crawler with a focus on character customization. A Kickstarter project for a proposed deluxe edition didn't reach its funding goal, but a limited physical release entered production after meeting with a positive fan response.

"[Class of Heroes 2 is] not out of QA yet, but I'd imagine it should be up on PSN about the 3rd week in May, and the physical a few weeks after that," Gaijinworks founder Victor Ireland notes. "The QA is really just a formality because all that changed was a couple lines of text cleaned up and the opening removed until the rights situation is cleared."

Class of Heroes 2 was originally released in Japan in 2009. Since then, a number of sequel titles have debuted for platforms including the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS. To date, only the first PSP entry in the series has seen a North American release.

This week's free PS Plus game is Zombie Tycoon 2, launching tomorrow as a PSN download on PS3 and PS Vita. Zombie Tycoon 2 is the sequel to Frima Studios' real-time strategy game pitting two mad scientists against one another, each with an army of zombies at his beck and call, as they try to invade the town of Finkleville.

In addition to the free game, the usual discount trumpeting will take place tomorrow. Spring Fever concludes with arguably its best week yet, offering up discounts themed around PlayStation All-Stars ($20 for PS Plus members) and its featured combatants. Many notable series are on sale, including entries in Metal Gear, Sly Cooper, BioShock, LittleBigPlanet, Devil May Cry, God of War, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank and Twisted Metal. Quell: Memento, coming to Vita, Android, and iOS, has a long lineage. "You see, the game prototype was originally created on an Amstrad CPC computer, way back in 1993," writes Fallen Tree Games art director Lewis Boadle on the PlayStation Blog. "Having said that, it was very different back then - it was called "Last of the Smileys" and was a lot more 8-bit in style."

Since that Amstrad prototype, the Quell series has grown, with two other games on mobile platforms. Memento is a series of 150-plus puzzles set in an abandoned house, in which you slide a raindrop to collect pearls, navigating other obstacles with various idiosyncratic properties. The elements are, in general, recognizable real-world things. "This would mean, we felt, that the player is able to establish the rules of play quickly, because they know that a pearl is valuable, or that a thorn will likely burst a droplet," Boadle says.

The fourth character trailer for Dragon's Crown showcases the Elf, who looks to have a dynamite range(r) of moves, able to gracefully string together mid-air attacks with kicks, fireballs, and flurries of arrows. Also, was that Medusa with laser eyes?

The web-based Sony Entertainment Network store has enabled automatic downloads of PlayStation 3 content. Items in your store queue will begin downloading once you turn on your console, either via Remote Play or a gentle caress of the power button. The process takes a few minutes to kick in after boot-up, according to PSN Stores.

Before this addition, games and other content purchased through the web store had to be manually retrieved from the PS3's download list.

Stealth Bastard, Curve Studios' sneaky puzzle platformer, has cleaned up its act and now sports a new name, as suggested by two fans: Stealth Inc - A Clone in the Dark. Curve held a contest to rename Stealth Bastard ahead of its launch on PS3 and Vita, promising the winner a Vita, a copy of the game and his name in the credits. Curve ended up picking two names and mashing them together, giving each person the grand prize.

"I'd like to express my gratitude to all 3,500+ of you that entered (yes, even those of you who submitted the perverted Stealth Orgasm, the outlandish Ze goggles! Zey do something! and the more classy El Chappo Stealtho)," Curve Lead Designer Sam Robinson writes. "They were all worthy titles, but there could be only one... well, two!"

It looks like that cute little robot dude in Machniarium has found the source of eternal life, the game first launching for PC in 2009 and still hitting other platforms in 2013, all to the wondrous fanfare. Machinarium is headed to European Vitas on May 1 for €5.99, following its North American launch on March 26.

The Vita version of Machinarium includes touchscreen options, improved zoom and full-quality audio and graphics. That last one is a good thing, because even after four years, Machinarium is still gorgeous - and adorable.

RubiqLab, the developer accused of cloning Vlambeer's upcoming 2D dogfighter Luftrausers, has taken to Facebook to assert that Vlambeer's game isn't an original concept.
The Game luftrauser is cloned by ( SKYSTRIKE , JETSTRIKE & many more ) And your game also came under pixel art. Earlier games likes SkyStricks & Jetstrike also were in pixel art. SO WHAT DO YOU SAY IS THAT REALLY YOUR OWN IDEA ? We dont think so. The clone in question, SkyFar, shares certain mechanics and a visual style with Vlambeer's game, painting the world in a blue hue versus Luftrausers red color scheme.Joystiq has contacted RubiqLab for further comment on its stance, and will update this post if the developer responds.

Luftrausers is the second game of Vlambeer's to be cloned. The first is the notorious case of Radical Fishing (Ridiculous Fishing on iOS), where Vlambeer's browser-based fishing game was beaten to iOS. Luftrausers is slated to launch this spring on PC, Mac, Linux, PS3 and PS Vita.

So far we've enjoyed Divekick based solely on its two-button mechanics, but the biographies of each character provided by creator Adam Heart are a brilliant addition to the game's satirical, ridiculous premise.

The bios divulge a lot of information about each fighter: Dive and Kick, for example, are fraternal twins whose mother sent them to live with their uncle in a town called Bel Air. Redacted, the Skunk Bear, has a cigar fetish.

The PlayStation Store update this week includes four full games, two new for PSN and three Vita games. The full games are Star Trek, SoulCalibur 5, Dead Island Riptide and Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII, while PSN gets God Mode and Thomas Was Alone.

Thomas Was Alone is a Cross Buy game, making it available on Vita today as well, along with Draw Slasher and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R.

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns is out as a PS2 Classic and PSP gets Black Rock Shooter The Game. The Spring Sale is still on, with discounts on Resident Evil 6 and Thomas Was Alone this week.

Vanillaware's pseudo-retro side-scrolling hack and/or slash game Dragon's Crown will launch for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, August 6, at $39.99 and $49.99 respectively, publisher Atlus has announced. Can you imagine getting a new crown put in for $50? You'd figure dragon dentistry would be a lot more expensive than that, what with the size and plentiful nature of their teeth.
