This just in: E3 2013 starts tomorrow. Well, technically, tomorrow is what we affectionately call "Day Zero" - due to the slew of major media briefings we'll be attending.

It's been nearly a decade since Microsoft and Sony brought new gear to E3 2013, and nearly a decade since Joystiq started making the trek to the industry's most important North American event. How do we do it? (Apart from all the coffee and nanotechnological augmentations, that is.)

Here's how the Joystiq crew is rolling in this year, including Jordan's tactical kit above and Mike Schramm's gear with the most up-to-date and hard-hitting (all in good fun) questions after the break.

Earlier this week, GameStop issued a June 18 "recall" of the 8GB $300 Wii U Basic, the version of the Wii U that smart consumers knew to avoid. Now a tipster sends us an internal flyer from Best Buy that looks like the retail giant is chucking the 8GB next week. Nintendo had called the GameStop "recall" a "rebalance" of supply. It sure looks closer to a discontinuation from here. The Best Buy flyer says "stores should pull all new in box units and send them back" on June 10-11. "Stores should expect to see more Wii U deluxe units arriving in the coming weeks." The black 32 GB Wii U Deluxe, which has sold for $350 and includes a game, doesn't appear to be going anywhere, though a price drop is surely possible. Note that Best Buy is anticipating more Wii U Deluxe units, perhaps a sign that Nintendo is going to start delivering the announced-for-Japan white 32GB unit in North America soon, too. Expect to find out more on June 11 at 10am ET, 7am PT when Nintendo holds its big online Nintendo Direct to kick off E3. And, remember, Best Buy is partnering with Nintendo next week to let shoppers play Nintendo's E3 Wii U demos at the stores. Surely they're on top of whatever Nintendo's got planned. The biggest news on the Nintendo eShop this week is definitely the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It hits the eShop on June 9 and, in case you didn't hear, we really enjoyed it. Meanwhile, Wii U Virtual Console picks up Spelunker today, and it gets Yoshi - the NES puzzle game - on June 12. The Wii also gets some Virtual Console love with Sengoku 3.

Trine 2: Directors Cut for Wii U is on sale for $9.99 until 9am Pacific on June 27. Finally, Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth has received a permanent price drop to $29.99.

Nintendo is pushing back a tad against the notion, reported by Kotaku yesterday, that 8GB Wii U Basic's demise is imminent. Yesterday we reported that GameStop has issued a "recall" of the $300 white version of the Wii U. Today, Nintendo says that they are simply doing a "rebalance" of the supply of white 8GB and the $350 black 32GB Wii U models. "There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware," Nintendo of America director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta told us in a statement today. "To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available." Sadly, the clarification clarifies little and seems to still allow for the potential removal of the 8GB Basic on June 18. GameStop doesn't appear to be "rebalancing" supply but instead intends to remove the lesser 8GB model. We've asked Nintendo for further clarification about whether the 8GB Basic is being discontinued. We'll let you know more, though it appears that the company's current priority is to disabuse anyone of the idea that the 8GB model was recalled, which is the language GameStop used in their notice to their stores—and which could imply malfunction rather than simply a decision not to sell the unit anymore. Nintendo will be selling a white 32GB version of the Wii U in Japan in July. Perhaps Nintendo is clearing these 8GB units for that one or just opting to go with one size and one price for its young console. We'll surely find out by June 11, the day of Nintendo's E3 address to gamers and exactly one week before GameStop is slated to pull the 8GB models. Ubisoft Quebec City has announced the appointment of new executive director of development Francois Pelland, who was most recently senior producer on Assassin's Creed 3 at Ubisoft Montreal. Pelland will "ensure the leadership of the innovation and creativity hub of Ubisoft Quebec" while "successfully delivering the ambitious projects being developed at the studio."

"I'm very proud to have accepted the position of Executive Director of Development at Ubisoft Quebec," says Pelland in the press release. "For me, it's a unique opportunity to be part of this rapidly growing studio and to provide my support for the studio's ambitious projects in the years to come."

Pelland has over 16 years of experience in video games, the lion's share of which were spent at EA and Ubisoft. Pelland founded EA Montreal and his work can be seen in the Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and Army of Two series.

A reliable retail source tells us that some GameStop chains will no longer be selling the 8GB Wii U as of June 18, exactly one week after Nintendo's big E3 kick-off event. Our source says GameStop has contacted stores with the following message: Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall - Two Week Preparation On Tuesday, 6/18, all stories will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic (020359). .. Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the [distribution center]. .. All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall. What's this mean? GameStop officials have not replied to our request for an official comment; we'll let you know if they do. Nintendo tells us: "We do not comment on our business practices with retailers." That's not helpful! Product recall for a defect? Or some pre-E3 removal of inventory to get ready for a price drop for the 32 GB model? Or just a discontinuation of the 8GB model? We don't know, but our retail source has a good track record. We'd love to hear from more. The 8GB version of the Wii U costs $300 and is white. Nintendo sells a 32GB model for $350 with Nintendo Land packed in. The Wii U launched on November 18. It's a good system but has been plagued by a lack of compelling first-year games, something Nintendo hopes to change with the looming releases of Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 and promised new Zelda and Mario adventures. Precursor Games, the development studio of ex-SIlicon Knights employees that has been attempting to fund a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness dubbed Shadow of the Eternals, will cancel both its Kickstarter campaign and its self-powered crowdfunding campaign through PayPal this Thursday, June 6. Precursor plans to re-launch the Kickstarter campaign in "just a few short weeks," at which point "exciting new developments" will be revealed.

"Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for," the announcement reads. "Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6."

Due to Kickstarter's architecture, no one that donated to the fundraising drive will be charged for their contributions. Likewise, the studio says that anyone who donated via the Precursor Games website will receive a full refund through PayPal.

As previously rumored, the undead ninja from the iconic Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise will be showing up as a downloadable add-on for Injustice. Scorpion shows up to bedevil the heroes and villains of the DC Comics universe for $4.99/400 Microsoft points. The video above shows superstar comics artist and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee talking with NetherRealm studio head Ed Boon about Lee's re-design of Scorpion. You also get a glimpse of Scorp fighting Blackest Night Superman. With a T-for-Teen rating from the ESRB, Injustice isn't quite as gory as the MK games. That's a shame because it'd be great to see how Aquaman reacts Scorp's fire-breathing fatality.

Eighteen days away from the end of its alloted lifespan, Precursor Games' Kickstarter fundraiser for Shadow of the Eternals has raised $117,484 of its $1.35 million dollar goal. Add that to the $157,415 Precursor has raised on its own website, and the entire movement has amassed $273,944 since this whole deal started back on May 6.

At its current rate, the Kickstarter campaign will top out at around $234,000, according to Kicktraq's analysis as of press time. "If the project does not reach its goal on Kickstarter, we will refund all pledges made through PayPal on our own site," Precursor COO Shawn Jackson said during a recent Reddit AMA. He also said, should the fundraising campaign fail, continued work on the game will be "unlikely," as Precursor does "not have any other source of funding."

"We will entertain all options to make this game a reality because we believe in this project," Jackson said. "However, we can't be sure a publisher will share our vision for interacting with the community during development, or this would work in the traditional model."

Toki Tori 2 is headed to Steam for the summer. Developer Two Tribes announced the enhanced port, titled Toki Tori 2+, will reach Windows and Mac on July 2.

A Steam Workshop-integrated level editor puts the plus into the new moniker, along with additional puzzles and some further tweaks building on the update to the Wii U version.

In addition to sprucing up the presentation, Two Tribes says it's added a new guiding mechanic for the puzzle platformer's early levels, as well as adding more gates to let players move across the world easier. The world map itself is also "improved" to help players better orientate.

Two Tribes originally had a level editor in mind for the Wii U version, but it wasn't included at launch. However, earlier this month the developer said it's still "heavily in development," so it should be due in a future update. In terms of the other Steam additions, Two Tribes said they'll also come to the Wii U version "where possible" and where it "makes sense."

Finally, anyone in a flap about the exclusion of Linux should know Two Tribes said a future version is headed there "probably at some point."

Tokyo Game Show's annual tagline for 2013 is significantly less wacky when compared to those used in previous years, and we're kinda bummed out about it. Whereas other TGS events have been embodied by excellent phrases like "GAME: Dancing Your Heart" and "Game, it's so energetic!" this year's slogan is "GAMES: Limitless Evolution," which is lacking a certain je ne sais quoi.

Japanese artist Ippei Gyoubu's female personification of the event (full-size here) is as fantastic as ever, though: "In this year's main visual," the announcement reads, "character 'She' who is the core of games wears a wide variety of devices and tools as parts and she is now going to transform herself into 'something' beyond the reach of imagination to dynamically represent 'GAMES: Limitless Evolution' which is the main theme of Tokyo Game Show 2013."

The conference will take place between September 19 and 22 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, where officials expect an estimated 200,000 visitors. Last year, the Tokyo Game Show broke its previous attendance records by drawing a total of 223,753 folks over the course of four days.

After coming to smartphones and tablets last month, the web version of Miiverse now allows users to post as well as browse. You still need the GamePad stylus if you want to doodle all over the Wii U's social network, but this week's update does bring other welcome features.

The web version now lets users follow and unfollow profiles, display friends and followers, and adjust profile and Miiverse settings. Also, for those curious about the Wii U world but without a Nintendo Network ID, any Miiverse post is viewable even if you're not signed in, as long as you have the URL. Test that out by clicking that source thingamajig just below.

Created by Gears for Breakfast, A Hat in Time tells the story of Hat Kid and her battle against the evil Mustache Girl. The game takes its inspiration directly from "collect-a-thon" platformers from the N64 era, with Gears for Breakfast unabashedly calling it "Banjo-Kazooie, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario 64 all in one!"

Hat Kid has a number of abilities at her disposal, thanks to a wonderfully useful umbrella that can be used as a hookshot and a pogo stick. As the title implies, the game also features time travel, though it's not clear exactly how that ties into the gameplay just yet. Also, if you haven't noticed, she has one sweet hat.

The game is planned for PC and Mac in early 2014, and Gears for Breakfast is in talks to create a Wii U version as well. It's also up on Steam Greenlight, if you feel like giving it a doff of the old cap. A Hat in Time is currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, having raked in nearly $25,000 of its $30,000 goal in just one day. Check out another gameplay trailer after the break.

One of the ways you could differentiate the Wii U Basic and the Wii U Premium bundles was their colors. Not any more. Until now, Nintendo has made the Wii U Premium Set available only in black (the Basic Set was white). But on July 13 in Japan, Nintendo is releasing the 32 GB Premium Set in white. Nintendo just released the list of more than 75 U.S. cities where Best Buy stores will be holding public, playable demonstrations of games the company will be showing off at E3. The demos will take place during four-hour blocks on two different days during the week of E3. The list of games to be shown was not provided in the release, nor were the locations of the 21 Best Buy stores in Canada also participating in the showcase. Rex Rocket, the Mega Man meets Metroid action-platformer, reached the end of its Kickstarter over the weekend. Originally seeking just $6,000, a goal it met at the beginning of May, the funding drive closed at $10,987 this past Sunday. That put the project just shy of its $11,000 stretch goal, which the developer - now known as Castle Pixel - has decided to unlock anyway. The goal will put the game on Linux, and it will also allow backers at the $10 level or higher to contribute info that will be stored in nodes throughout the SS Montana, Rex Rocket's massive ship.

Rex Rocket is aiming for a January 2014 launch on PC. In addition to the Linux port, Castle Pixel is trying to release the game on as many platforms as possible, including Mac, Vita, 3DS, Wii U, Ouya, iOS and Xbox Live Indie Games. If you'd like to play it on Steam, you might consider giving it a thumbs up on Greenlight.

Maybe it's just our Memorial Day hangovers, but today's gaming Gold Box from Amazon feels a bit muted. There aren't that many deals, and the all-day discount sees Injustice: Gods Among Us drop to $35 - a price we saw it at some time ago - albeit, the Collector's Edition is also going for $65. Still, maybe it'll perk up with the Lightning offerings.

The highlights look to be Tomb Raider (9AM PT, midday ET), Forza Horizon (2PM PT, 5PM ET), and Dead Island Riptide. Regards Riptide, it has a couple of hours to survive at the time of publishing. The Gold Box discount sees the Special Edition sliced to $31.99 and the Rigor Mortis Edition cut to $59.99.

We've all had our fun with the Xbox One's less-than-stellar reveal, but for eBay, the console's problems are more than just a joke; they're a way for Nintendo to make some sales. eBay Germany's Facebook page ran the above ad over the weekend. The image is fine, but it's the text underneath that's getting the jab in. it reads: -Keine Gebraucht-Spiel-Sperren-Keine Online-Pflicht-Kein Gedöns Which translated means: - No used-game locking- No mandatory online- No fuss Cute. Wii U [eBay Germany, via Destructoid].

Lego Marvel Super Heroes will feature Venom and the Human Torch when the game launches this fall for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U, Vita and 3DS. TT Games Producer Phil Ring announced the character additions at MCM Comic Con in the UK, according to a series of tweets from TT Games employees.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes has an original storyline starring Nick Fury, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and others, all battling Loki and Galactus, and all in Lego form. The game stars over 100 unlockable characters from the Marvel universe, so staples such as Venom and the Human Torch are just the beginning.

This developer diary video for Splinter Cell: Blacklist explores the characters that players can use in the game's co-op missions. The game is coming to Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on August 20.

Gamestop's financial data for the first quarter of its fiscal 2013 have arrived like a pizza with nearly 25 percent fewer toppings than the pizza you ordered during the same 13-week period last year. Also, cheesy bread sales are way up? This may not be the strongest analogy.

In non-allegorical terms, gross revenue (overall sales) and net income (post-tax profit) were both down year-over-year, at $1.865 billion and $54.6 million, respectively. As far as net income, that's a 24.69 percent decrease from the $72.5 million Gamestop reported at the end of Q1 2012.

Meanwhile, mobile device sales were up 290 percent, though this massive increase was largely due to the fact that Gamestop's mobile trade-in/sales program was just getting started during Q1 of 2012. Digital sales also increased, to the tune of 47.3 percent year-over-year, while new software sales, both physical and digital, fell 3.8 percent.

As was the case during Q1 2012, used hardware and software sales accounted for the majority of Gamestop's pre-tax profit, with new hardware and software sales making up just 29.5 percent of the quarter's overall gross.

Square Enix America CEO Mike Fischer left the company this month and is now vice president of digital music and video for Amazon in Japan, Polygon reports. This follows news in April that Square Enix America eliminated "a number of positions" and Fischer was expected to leave in May. Those same reports said the head of marketing should be gone after E3, along with other employees in public relations.

In March, Square Enix President Yoichi Wada stepped down and the company announced widespread restructuring that it expected to cost $106 million. Square Enix posted a net loss of $134 million for fiscal year 2013, citing "weak" sales of major console games, including Sleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider, the last of which sold 3.4 million in its first month.
