If you're a resident of the United Kingdom and would prefer to put your money directly into Luigi's pocket, rather than into the coffers of big business, you now have the option of doing so, as the Nintendo UK Online Store has opened for business.

The shop offers the expected range of Wii U bundles, limited-edition Pokemon-themed 3DS units, games and other various sundries. While there don't appear to be any sales or surprises to speak of, other than in-stock New Leaf 3DSes, you do get free shipping on every order and free next-day delivery on orders over £200.

If you've somehow avoided accumulating a backlog over the year or just enjoy the act of spending money, Steam and Amazon have some weekend gaming deals to help you burn cash.

Steam enthusiasts can splurge on the service's 2K Games Weekend, which includes Bioshock Infinite for $13.59 and Civilization 5, Spec Ops: The Line and Borderlands 2 for $14.99 apiece. PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate is $9.99, or if you say to hell with the past decade, 1998's Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is an even $5.

Amazon has blacked out $30 from The Bureau: XCOM Declassified's price on Xbox 360 and PS3 while knocking the PC version down to $19.99. Splinter Cell: Blacklist has crept its way to $39.99 for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U, but you can gear up for a special mission with its Aircraft Edition for $99.99 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

If you'd rather get ready for the PlayStation 4, Amazon is also offering $30 of bonus credit towards a DualShock 4 if you trade in $30 worth of qualifying video games. You can check to see if anything you're willing to part with is eligible through the search function on the promotion's page.

Yacht Club Games' platformer Shovel Knight, a mash-up of old-school aesthetics with new school sensibilities, got a fancy new trailer today to show off its 8-bit sound and style. Now, when are we going to get to play it?

"We're shooting for winter, but no specific release date to announce," Yacht Club's Sean Velasco told us. "When we know, we'll make sure to let you know too."

The game is currently available to pre-order for Steam PC, Mac and Linux for $15. Those interested in the Wii U and 3DS versions will need to wait a while longer and can rest assured it's not shovelware.

I have a lot of action figures. Every once in awhile I like to pull them down from their shelves or out of their boxes. I admire each one. Maybe I'll pose then and take a few pictures. Then I get bored and put them away again. Playing Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure feels just like that. Read more...

Nintendo might be playing Trick or Treat a little early this year. Notable new eShop releases are relatively thin this week, with the highlights being Just Dance 2014 on Wii U (arriving October 8) and the new Picross E3 for 3DS. If you missed out on Sega's inventive Rhythm Thief last year, that's up on the eShop now as well. There is also, in fact, a game called Halloween: Trick or Treat 2, possibly a subtle hint from Nintendo that we haven't given it enough candy.

But who needs big new games when you can get old games on the cheap? From now until 9am PT on October 10, those who pick up the newly released Wii U Virtual Console versions of Final Fight, Final Fight 2 or Final Fight 3 can get a second fighting game (from a limited selection) for half price. The promo doesn't appear to be live as of this writing, but you'll be able to find it right here. Finally, you can pick up the weirdly engrossing Little Inferno for half price until 9am PT on October 9.

A new Disney Infinity figure, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas, will be available as a timed exclusive through GameStop. Starting on October 5, all brick-and-mortar locations in the US will sell Jack and almost 100 locations will have Nintendo representatives on-hand to demo the game to curious shoppers. The first 50 sold in each store that Saturday will also walk out with a free poster.

Disney Infinity launched in August and uses a physical base not unlike Skylanders to marry toys with a video game. By placing the figurine on the base along with "Power Discs," the character is activated and transported into the game's virtual toy box.

In our review of Disney Infinity, we ultimately found the experience to be enjoyable for both kids (we're kids at heart) and adults. Disney Infinity is currently available on the Nintendo Wii, Wii U, 3DS, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, the enhanced version of the 2011 hit, will be released on October 22 in North America. The European launch will follow on October 25. Director's Cut has been expanded with new features and content, though the big highlight is a new "second screen experience.*"

Using the GamePad, PlayStation Vita and SmartGlass on Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively, players will have access to numerous features on their touchscreens of choice. That includes everything from inventory management to hacking, using radar, looting enemies, sniping and more.

Developer Eidos Montreal announced earlier today that it plans to greatly expand the Deus Ex franchise with a new project called Deus Ex: Universe, which will include a new game for PC and next-gen consoles.

On October 15, Zen Studios will issue three additional tables to Star Wars Pinball. PSN in North America gets the new "Balance of the Force" pack first on October 15, followed by a launch on PSN in Europe the following day as well as Xbox Live Arcade, Steam, Windows 8, iOS, Android and Kindle.

Unfortunately, the Wii U and Mac versions have been delayed. Zen Studios says it'll make an announcement regarding those platforms "at a later time."

The "Balance of the Force" includes three new locales based around series loud-breather Darth Vader, the planet of Endor from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and a Starfighter Assault table that pays homage to the series' iconic space battles.

Though the Wii stands as Nintendo's top-selling console, it appears that the device is not long for this world.

Nintendo of Japan revealed the news on its official Wii website (courtesy Kotaku translation), stating that Wii "manufacturing is scheduled to end soon." It offers no firm date after which the company will cease building Wiis, nor any official word on whether this move is exclusive to Japan or if it applies globally. We've reached out to Nintendo for clarification.

As Engadget points out, this decision should come as little surprise. Nintendo released the Wii's successor nearly a year ago, and has long since turned its PR efforts toward the new machine. Further, the Wii U has been able to play Wii games since day one. Its most recent update even allows players to enjoy Wii software on the new system's portable GamePad screen.

Nintendo's latest Wii U firmware update is stuffed with additions, including the ability to play Wii games on the GamePad screen - although Wiimotes are still required to control them. The 4.0.0 U update is live, so you can download and install it right now.

Standing out among the various features and tweaks is the ability to plug a headset directly into the GamePad for Wii U Chat, and being able to take screenshots and upload them through the Internet browser during gameplay.

The 4.0 update also adds USB keyboard support, Surround Sound support for Wii games, the option to automatically download recommended software and demos via SpotPass, and even the ability to view PDF files in the browser, and more besides.

Check out the full update notes here.

Injustice: Gods Among Us invites patch 1.06 to join its ranks on October 1, bringing in a range of balance adjustments and gameplay fixes. Also dropping tomorrow, for free, is the Man of Steel skin for Zod.

Fixes impact most of the characters in Injustice, with a notable amount of tweaking for Black Adam, Zatanna and Flash. With patch 1.06, Black Adam's Lightning Strike only hits grounded opponents when performed outside of a combo, his back-dashing covers less ground, the duration of his Orbs of Seth power is reduced and its cool-down increased, and he has an improved hit advantage with the Eye of Horus combo. The hitbox on Flash's Flying Uppercut has been improved and Zatanna no longer has an infinite combo against larger characters.

Check out the hefty list of patch 1.06 fixes below.

Mega Man 2 sound composer Takashi Tateishi (above, right) has joined Keiji Inafune's team at Concept, and will help score the Kickstarter-funded Mega Man spiritual successor game Mighty No. 9.

Composing under the psedonym "Ogeretsu Kun," Tateishi's works helped define the 8-bit era, and his Mega Man 2 soundtrack is particularly memorable. If you want to sample Tateishi's creations (assuming that they aren't running in a near-constant loop inside your brain already), Wily Stage 1 is a good place to start. Air Man's a classic, too. I'm all about Bubble Man, personally.

The Kickstarter project for Mighty No. 9 recently crested $3 million in pledges, and has entered its final 48 hours. In addition to previously announced releases for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, and Mac, Mighty No. 9 will also hit the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 if funding reaches $3.3 million by the campaign's conclusion.

There'll be an extra bit of Nintendo Network server maintenance this morning, but it's only scheduled for five more hours. Wii U and 3DS downtime regularly occurs between 1PM and 5PM PT (4PM to 8PM ET/9PM to 1AM UK time) every Monday, but today's maintenance begins early at 8AM PT (11AM ET, 4PM UK time). Some in-game and Miiverse features won't be accessible during the downtime, and disconnections from online games may occur.

Nintendo hasn't said what the extended maintenance is for; we wonder if we'll find out in tomorrow's Nintendo Direct, billed for Wii U and 3DS games due later this year.

The Binding of Isaac has turned 2 years old, but it's gamers that get the birthday presents. For one day, The Binding of Isaac is $1 on Steam, an 80 percent cut from its usual $5 price tag. In addition, the creators of Indie Game: The Movie have released on YouTube a 30-minute excerpt from their documentary in which Isaac designer Edmund McMillen details the origins of his game.

McMillen explained Isaac was originally conceived as a game to be made in a week, while his friend and co-designer of Super Meat Boy, Tommy Refenes, went on vacation. "I didn't really have any idea of what I wanted to do, but I definitely wanted to do something risky," McMillen said. "I wanted to do something exciting, because I wanted something to replace that danger of running out of money, and the danger was, maybe I was going to do something that could hurt my career in some way."

Two years and 2 million sales later, it seems the game-in-a-week experiment worked.

Batman: Arkham Origins' Initiation DLC will explore Bruce Wayne's journey to be a ninja before he became a bat, producer Guillaume Voghel told Eurogamer at this week's Eurogamer Expo.

Initiation will follow Bruce's efforts to prove himself to Kirigi, the ninja that taught ninjitsu to both Bruce and his enemy Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins. Initiation will be the first event within the Arkham series to use a setting outside of Gotham.

Arkham Origins will also feature I Am The Night, a difficulty mode that unlocks after players complete New Game+. I Am The Night will not allow saves and limits Batman to just one life. Considering Voghel said that Arkham Origins' "main narrative arc and side missions last about 12 hours," it sounds like players will need to conduct a crime-fighting marathon to overcome I Am The Night.

Shadow of the Eternals has been officially shelved, according to a post from Precursor Games Chief Creative Director Denis Dyack.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold," Dyack wrote. "We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all - we cannot thank you enough."

Shadow of the Eternals is the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness, which Dyack directed. The team held two Kickstarter campaigns, the first of which was canceled, and the latter of which failed to meet its goal. Dyack said last month that the Precursor team hadn't yet given up, and that they would "pursue other avenues with the ultimate goal of having our games come to fruition," but his most recent post on the Precursor forums also notified fans that many of the team would be "taking a break."

For those looking for the upside in this news: The game is on hold, not completely scrapped. "We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again," Dyack wrote. In other words, Shadow of the Eternals isn't dead just yet. It's a Lovecraftian horror game, and as Lovecraft once wrote, "That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die."

Mighty No. 9 will head to 3DS and PlayStation Vita if its Kickstarter project reaches $3.5 million, a project update revealed today. Comcept has raised over $2.6 million in its crowdfunding campaign so far, which is scheduled to end on Tuesday, October 1. Meanwhile, the campaign's previously announced $3.3 million goal would bring the game to PS4 and Xbox One, and the game will already come to PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U thanks to reaching its $2.2 million goal.

Mighty No. 9 is a 2D side-scrolling platformer from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune. The retro-inspired Mega Man spiritual successor includes a Boss Rush mode and will seek a balance between old-school difficulty and fair, modern gameplay. Comcept noted that, providing the $3.5 million stretch goal is met, Abstraction Games will be in charge of the Mighty No. 9 port to handheld systems, the same developer that brought Hotline Miami to PS3 and Vita.

Seeing over two thousand comic book heroes and villains drawn in Scribblenauts' distinctive style is bonkers. When the sandbox series debuted in 2009, I remember fans caricaturing hundreds of pop culture figures in the same charming, squat style, imagining their favorite characters dropped into Scribblenauts' colorful world. Aside from a handful of licensed characters in previous Scribblenauts games, there haven't been many cameo opportunities for the famous figures fans have dreamed of, at least not in any official sense.

That's why it's nuts to see Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure injected with icons like Batman and Superman, along with thousands of other characters from the DC Comics universe, and all of them drawn just like the game's rooster-capped star, Maxwell. They're flying and swooping around as if it's no big deal, as if it isn't an amazing feat that you can now summon them effortlessly with Maxwell's magic notebook by just typing their name, and then interact with them in ways you'd never see in the comic books.
