Bohemia are well known as the creators of the deep and deeply shonky military sim Arma and its zombie-infested survival spin-off DayZ. They’re moderately known as the creators of turn-based spinoff Arma Tactics and commercial helicopter sim Take On Helicopters. They’re not at all known as the developers of XCOM-homage UFO: Afterlight and Alpha Prime, which is some sort of videogame.

Yet you’ll find all of the above in this week’s Humble Weekly sale, the Bohemia Humble Bundle.(more…)

A PC demo for Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is now available. Created by Arma (and now Day Z) developer Bohemia Interactive, Carrier Command revisits the 1988 game of the same name, mashing up strategy, vehicular land and air combat and first-person shooting.

You can nab the demo now from the Carrier Command website.

Did you read Jim’s thoughts on Carrier Command: Gaea Mission? If not, go and read them now. I’ll wait. If it takes longer than ten minutes, I’ll just assume you accidentally fell into the comments and read them as well. Ooookay. Everyone back? Good. Some of you might be thinking that Carrier Command sounds like a game you’d like to play but with a whole lot of issues you’re not sure you can tolerate. Well, lo and behold, a demo has been released. It features “two demo-exclusive assaults on the Thermopylae and Granite islands”. Maybe that will help.

Bohemia’s remake of a classic 1980s hybrid strategy game, Carrier Command: Gaea Mission, landed quietly on the beaches of a PC release last week. But will it now storm the citadel? Or simple wash away with the tide? Here’s wot I think.

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is Now Available on Steam.

From the creators of the award-winning Arma™ tactical military shooter series comes a next-gen re-imagination of a groundbreaking 80s classic. Set in a vast open archipelago, Carrier Command: Gaea Mission brings a breathtaking combination of action game and strategy elements!

As a result of a catastrophic war between the United Earth Coalition and the Asian Pacific Alliance, Earth has been rendered an almost uninhabitable wasteland. The only hope lies in a distant planetary system, where the moon Taurus holds the key to restoring Earth's dwindling water supply. As a battle-hardened member of the surviving UEC forces, Lt Myrik is put in command of an armed vehicle carrier. By traversing the seas and establishing a network of island bases, his mission is to hunt down the enemy and conquer the Dead Zone on the planetoid Taurus.

The release of the Carrier Command remake from Bohemia is almost upon us! (September 27th!) That means last-minute fancy trailers showing the game’s mix of strategy and action are now inevitable, as you can see below. I’ve played a bunch of this already, and I am keen to get my hands on the finished thing and really get stuck in. While being somewhat nostalgic, this is something of a departure for Bohemia, with them making a game that seems to put spectacle before action, while at the same time delivering strategic depth and tough tactical challenges. It’s going to be an interesting balancing act: keeping Bohemia’s wish to be faithful to the original 1980s game with modern spangles.(more…)

Surprise: I’m delighted that Bohemia Interactive’s big, bizarre remake of Carrier Command can be played with an Xbox 360 pad.* I love Arma II, but its control scheme sometimes feels like it was designed by a randomly picking menus from a… menu. In Carrier Command, meanwhile, you control a small flotilla of vehicles as you attempt to gain control of an archipelago of thirty randomly placed islands, and you can do it quite easily with a joypad. Someone somewhere in Bohemia’s studios has learned a valuable lesson in accessibility, and I want to hug them.

I didn’t hug them. This article can be the hug.(more…)

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission will make its way to North American shores this October 2, Rising Star Games has announced. Developed by Bohemia Interactive, the studio behind the Arma series (and now the standalone version of DayZ), Carrier Command will be available on both Xbox 360 and PC.

Based on the original Carrier Command simulation game, Gaea Mission takes place in a futuristic setting, blending first-person shooting and vehicular combat both on the ground and in the air. Check out a new trailer above.

You should not attempt to fistfight robots. Because they're made of metal, and robots are strong.

As the slow dribble of behind-closed-doors E3 videos begin – rendering that whole “behind-closed-doors” bit a little farcical as it does every year – I suggest saving them all up and watching them all in three days, ideally in rooms about half a mile apart, with five minutes to get back and forth between them. Have those rooms be un-airconditioned, sealed off heat traps with the volume three times louder than the human ear can stand. Capture the experience. One very worthy addition to your schedule is Carrier Command‘s 11 minute presentation, giving you an in-depth idea of how it will play. It’s below.

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission has entered a “play & contribute” beta, a familiar sort of exercise in which you get to play a slice of the strategy campaign – the meaty archipelago-conquering core of the game – in exchange for your pre-order. Having already dabbled in some of the story mission elements of this action-heavy strategy, I was keep to get stuck into this deeper challenge. Read into the depths to see how I got on.

Last time we head from Bohemia’s remake of the 1980s vehicular action-strategy masterpiece it was due for a “Q2″ release, but that’s now been pushed back to September. Fear not, brave carrier-captains, because a beta will soon be along to satiate your old-made-new desires. There’s going to be a 20€ basic pre-order pack over here from April 6th, but you can also pay 40€ for some kind of deluxe one. Bohemia explain that the beta allows players access to the most interesting part of the game: “The beta, which will launch on April 6, offers a compressed version of the Strategic Campaign. Instead of following the Gaea Mission storyline, this mode spotlights the gameplay and is considered to be a great representative of the enormous amount of player freedom – as opposed to the more linear experiences seen in many other games.” I reckon the game looks pretty good, too, and I got my hands on it way back here. I’m rather excited to see how it has progressed, too!
