There’s no question that Dishonored’s Heart deserves celebration. Fortunately RPS contributor Paul Walker has done that in fine style, digging in to what makes the object so significant to the game, and speaking to co-creative directors Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio about how it came to exist, and their feelings about its part in the game.

Dishonored’s Heart is an object which lives up to its name in many ways. It breathes life into the game’s characters, imbues the city of Dunwall with soul, and helps the player to feel the melancholy tone which permeates all facets of its world. Characterised by the intersection of the mystical and the technological, it distills the very essence of the pseudo-Victorian steampunk landscape in which Dishonored’s tale unfolds. It is presented to the player as a navigation tool — a guide to lead players to the occult items littered throughout the fictional city of Dunwall. But, as co-creative directors Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio told me, “It also plays a part related to informing their decisions about when to apply violence or not, making it a really interesting, more subtle part of the power fantasy.” Here we start to get to grips with what it is the makes the Heart so compelling.

With Dishonored, the team at Arkane Studios let you decide what type of assassin you wanted to be – you could focus on stealth and remain in shadow, or simply leave a trail of blood across the game’s missions. However you played, by the game’s end, you had become Dunwall’s greatest assassin.

But how do you stack up about against the rest of the world?

In Dishonored’s new DLC, Dunwall City Trials, all your skills will be tested across 10 challenge maps. Providing a challenge to all levels of players, these maps will require you to creatively combine your supernatural abilities, weapons and gadgets with well-timed stealth and agility tactics.

8252675605_2266426c5a_n.jpg8252673899_1d1be7a53f_n.jpg

Read below for a quick overview of the Challenge Maps:

  • Assassin’s Run: A true test for accomplished crossbow users, you’ll need to quickly eliminate targets as you move through the level. Just be careful not to kill any civilians.
  • Mystery Foe: Collect the map’s four clues without being discovered to investigate which NPC is your assassination target. Complete the level by successfully completing the assassination.
  • Bend Time Massacre: Each round of this challenge map begins with your character peering through glass and learning your assassination goal. Once you break the glass, the “Bend Time” effect will begin and you’ll need to race against the clock to complete the objective. Attain higher scores by completing the Bonus Round at the end of each objective.
  • Burglars: Sneak into a mansion (easier said than done) to recover six Clockwork Eggs and as many valuables as you can. Make sure you’re not detected – three strikes and you’re out.
  • Bonfires: This one is for Blink experts. With the clock running, touch as many light beacons as you can.
  • Oil Drop: Be quick on the draw to destroy waves of oil tanks tossed from above. You’ll have to be handy with the steel if you know what I mean.
  • Train Runner: A true test of agility, you’ll need to be faster than a speeding bullet in this race to outrun a locomotive.
  • Back Alley Brawl: Put all your offensive abilities to the test as you battle hordes of enemies, round after round.
  • Kill Chain Massacre: Kill a high number of enemies in a continuous chain using the environment and/or your powers. Take your time before each round to map out a killing-combo strategy. Once you make your first kill, it’s a race against the clock.
  • Kill Cascade: Perform a series of drop assassinations as you try to reach the end of the run as fast as possible. Perfecting this challenge is no easy task, but it ends with a surprise twist.

As you complete challenges, you’ll receive a completion rating and score and be able to see how you stack up against the competition via leaderboards. Additionally, Dunwall City Trials unlocks 10 new trophies, including:

  • Mr. Pilsen’s Remorse: You found Emily’s doll hidden in each of the 10 challenges
  • Void Start: You completed all Normal and Expert challenges with a 3-Stars rating
  • By My Hand Alone: You made it to Wave 13 in Back Alley Brawl killing all combatants personally
  • Assassin vs. Machine: You completed Train Runner before the train arrives at the station
  • Rare Collector: You found all of the collectable figurines in Burglar on Expert
  • Long Way Down: You performed a drop assassination of at least 150 meters in the Kill Cascade challenge
  • Headhunter: You completed Assassin’s Run with 100% accuracy using only head shots
  • Daredevil: In Bonfires, you performed all the special combination jumps in 1 round
  • Natural Talent: You finished Mystery Foe without using any active supernatural powers
  • Time Management: You finished Chain Kill or Bend Time Massacre without failing any wave, including bonuses

Purchase Dunwall City Trials today on the PlayStation Store for $4.99.

#dishonored Revenge may solve everything, according to Dishonored's marketing spiel. But it doesn't fill the burning need to teleport, slow down time or possess enemies once you've finished Arkane's masterpiece. Thankfully, DLC that lets you craft more gloriously choreographed kills hits next week. Get your glimpse of the Dunwall City Trials in the video above. More »

The first DLC for Dishonored is, as we know, the Dunwall City Trials. Rather than expanding the story in any meaningful way, this is much more of a mechanical inclusion, a series of tests to apply skills gained from playing the game in its rather beautiful setting. And there’s a new trailer showing it in action. With the most inappropriate, dreadful music imaginable. Take action! Click below!

Having run out of creepy little girls to sing Dishonored songs in trailers, Bethesda has apparently gone down a different route. We leave it up to you if this is an improvement. Be prepared, it sets off at the :38 mark.

The sales of Dishonored thus far have been high enough for Bethesda to consider it the beginning of a new franchise, the company has told Destructoid. Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines said that Dishonored is "far exceeding our sales expectations." He added that the game did "terrific numbers again" over Thanksgiving weekend, both at retail and also via Steam, where it was the best selling game over the weekend. Overseas sales have been strong as well. "Clearly we have a new franchise," said Hines.

Bethesda didn't disclose specific sales numbers, though we do know that it moved 460,200 boxed copies of Dishonored in North America during its launch month of October, an impressive number for a new IP launching at the beginning of the crowded holiday shopping season. Factor in overseas sales, Black Friday and digital sales, and Dishonored looks to be a hit.

I wonder what sales projections look like for Bethesda. The splendid news today is that Dishonored has outsold the publisher’s expectations. But when they sell games like Skyrim, what must those expectations be like! Talking to Destructoid, the Mouth Of Bethesda, Pete Hines, was disappointingly cagey about saying exactly how many copies had sold (oh could this industry just GROW UP), but did explain that they were so impressive that Bethesda now have a new franchise on their hands.

The somewhat underwhelming in concept first DLC for Dishonored is, as we already knew, Dunwall City Trials. It’s a challenge map pack rather than an expansion containing more long-game assassinations or world-building. This leaves me a little cold in principle, but perhaps there will be something to be said for using and combining the game’s many combat, stealth and movement systems unfettered and without the focus on meeting a specific objective.

The pack now has a release date, which is December 11, and a price, which is £3.99. And specific details, which are below. I’m nice like that.(more…)

Dishonored invites players to participate in the "Dunwall City Trials" on December 11. The first add-on pack for the game includes "10 challenge maps," that publisher Bethesda notes will have players battle waves of various enemies, test their supernatural assassination skills and "take out targets in a non-stop run of drop assassinations."

Dunwall City Trials will cost $5 (400 MSP) and will be available worldwide in two weeks for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Bethesda previously stated Dishonored would add a second and third DLC pack in 2013, with the future content focusing on story-driven elements. Supernatural assassin Daud will be the focus of the second pack, which the publisher mentioned would be available in "spring 2013."

#dishonored I loved Dishonored's dank, diseased city of Dunwall. It felt so fully realized, and had so much character. A lot of that came from the food. Like Bioshock before it, most of Dishonored's characters leave food lying around. As the protagonist Corvo meanders from room to room, he'll often take stabbing-breaks to eat everything that's not nailed down. More »

That’s hundreds of years away!) is Dunwall City Trials, and it’ll cost you €5, or £4, or whatever it is Americans use for bartering these days.

Dishonored will add its first piece of downloadable content, "Dunwall City Trials," this December. Dunwall City Trials adds "10 challenge maps" that will have players battle waves of enemies, time challenges and "a gravity-defying run of drop assassinations."

Bethesda also announced that a second and third DLC pack will arrive in 2013, each offering a story-driven campaign. Daud, the supernatural assassin, is the focus of the second pack and it's scheduled for "spring 2013."

Dunwall City Trials will be available for $5 (400 MSP), the other two packs will reveal their prices closer to launch.

Yesterday Jim wrote a superb piece arguing that games are best when everything is going wrong. That the measure of a game’s potential for generating anecdotes, and its depth of connection to the player, is based in the amount of peril it’s able to generate. Citing games like Day Z, FTL and XCOM, Jim’s argument made one small mistake: it was all wrong. Games aren’t best when they’re stressing you out, piling on the pressure, raising your anxiety levels to breaking point! Games are best when they embrace you into their wonderful worlds, telling you great stories, and letting you get away from the incessant worries of real life.

With Dishonored reactivating long-dormant stealth glands the world over, now seems a fine time to revisit perhaps its primary ancestor, the Thief games. Doom 3 total conversion The Dark Mod is a mightily ambitious attempt to recreate Thief in a more modern, and very much darkness-orientated, engine, and it’s just had a major update.
