The Metroid Mod is an impressive recreation of Nintendo's NES classic within punishing roguelike, Spelunky. The mod isn't out yet, but that can't stop you from watching Samus Aran explore Zebes-inspired caverns and avoid giant Metroids, speedy Skrees and even Ridley.

This is Spud's Quest, a neat little six-hour (that's playtime, not development time) puzzle-adventure with a Metroid-inspired upgrade system, temples based on Zelda's, and gameplay inspired by classic European platformer series Dizzy. It is set to hit PC this summer, and can be pre-ordered via its official website.

Retro Studios, makers of the legendary Metroid Prime series, is currently busy creating the next generation of Donkey Kong Country, much to the chagrin of a lot of Metroid fans. That doesn't mean, however, that they abandoned Metroid. On the contrary. "Well, we love Metroid. We love Metroid Prime and we always will," Retro Studios President Michael Kelbaugh told IGN. "It was a big part of our studio, the culture of the studio... We might do another one someday. But we really enjoyed working with [Donkey Kong] as well." Kelbaugh explained that the team wanted to develop another Donkey Kong Country to see what they could do with the franchise on the Wii U's more powerful hardware, and to implement some leftover ideas from Country Returns. So, why not develop a new Metroid Prime alongside the new Donkey Kong Country? "We’re pretty much on one major project at a time. We do a game every two years or three years... Do we have the bandwidth to do two major projects at once? I don’t think so. A big project and a little project at the same time, we can do that." IGN then spoke to Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe, producer of all four Metroid Prime titles, who chimed in with his own ideas on where the Prime series could go next. "Basically I’m thinking of, not just Samus, but how we can expand the whole Samus universe. You remember Metroid Prime Hunters. I’m thinking about things like how we could make that go out further, with all these different bounty hunters as well." Well, better late than never. new Hunters almost confirmed

Hunters wasn't made by Retro. As far as any involvement had with Hunters, Retro only supplied character designs. I hope Retro's can make a better "Hunters" type game than NST did, though.

SNES classic Super Metroid went on sale for under a buck earlier this week, the combination of price and the game's status obviously resulting in a massive influx of new players. Players that, thanks to the wonders of the Miiverse, appear to be...struggling with 1990s game design. There's always the chance these guys are trolling/joking, but then, it seems just as likely that a generation of people who have grown up with proper tutorials and hand-holding are, well, finding it all a little difficult. Are people struggling with Super Metroid or are they trolling? [Go Nintendo]

It always baffles me when people go out of their way to make Metroid's Samus look "beautiful". As if that matters. There's a reason her gender was kept secret for the first game, and that's because the point was she was a badass, not that she was a she. So I love this pic by poojipoo, which gives her a hard edge that's been lacking from recent entries on the series. I mean, you've seen the things she's seen, and done the things she's done, you're going to look a little "harder" than a Barbie doll in a blue jumpsuit. Samus Portrait [DeviantArt, via Gamefreaks]

Lovers of Nintendo’s sci-fi action franchise know that Metroid’s female protagonist and a cosmic ecosystem of creatures that nest all over the galaxy were inspired by Ridley Scott’s classic space horror film Alien . A new poster by artist Marinko Milosevski (who we've featured before) honors that thematic connection with a darkly cool image done ina movie poster style. Here’s what Milosevski had to say when I asked him about the piece: I know Alien inspired the game, and I wanted to start a series of posters that were like theatrical posters so this is the first of those. I also thought it'd be really fun and interesting to portray an older, simpler looking game like Metroid really seriously, which is where the dark tones and everything came from for this. Making the actual image itself was the easy part after thinking up how I wanted it laid out and coming up with the idea. I basically drew the various shapes like the egg and the Metroid and just expanded from there adding highlights to the egg and a light gradient coming out of it to shine under the bottom of the Metroid. If you want to hang this haunting image up on your wall—maybe next to Milosevski's awesome Legend of Zelda and Metal Gear Solid prints—head on over to his site.

Hang this translucent beauty where it can catch some sun and you might see people genuflecting. This kind of craftsmanship doesn't come cheap but it's adman sight more classy than a poster or a statue. More »
