Any Tad Williams fans in the audience? Ah, just that guy at the back. Oh well, this is for you, anyway: Otherland, the Tad Williams-directed MMO based on his sci-fi scribblings, is going to enter beta this weekend. It’s closed for now, but you can sign up for a chance to get in on the main site. (Top left!)

Otherland is quite ambitious, with different “worlds” encompassing varied genre conventions in a single game: a fantasy Medieval England, a cyberpunk city, a tranquil Eastern mythology, and so on. I suppose it’s a bit of a cultural death knell for an alternative dance music genre when middle-class geeks start ritually making vaguely inaccurate gags about it, and indeed when it suddenly finds its way onto every other game trailer. Dubstep – increasingly better known as Wub Wub – appears to be the go-to games marketing of 2012. Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 have already staked their wubby claim, and now it’s the turn of Unreal 3-powered MMO Otherland. #hollywood I got excited in 2008 when news hit somebody was making a game based on Tad Williams' Otherland series of books. That game never turned up. Since it was an MMO, I am already over it, and now excited all over again because Otherland is being turned into very expensive motion pictures instead. More »

Here’s a new, visually splendid, cyberpunk action MMORPG from Singaporean dev RealU and free-to-play types Gamigo. Based on the book series by Tad Williams, Otherland seems to mash up abstract sci-fi visuals with more traditional fantasy MMO guff, as well as some entirely abstract things. Based on Tad Williams' sci-fi book series of the same name, developer RealU's Otherland is scheduled to be released in North America and Europe in 2012. Gamigo will handle online publishing, while dtp entertainment will publish the retail version of this free-to-play game...
