This is a game that skilfully blends the safe with the courageous in an alchemical fusion of old and new, somehow brave and default all at once.

Brave, then, for Square Enix to drop the Final Fantasy moniker in favour of a curious title with no cachet. But it's apropos: beneath the well-known veneer, Bravely Default is, to a certain point, something else entirely.

You have to give Square Enix points for honesty; Bravely Default: For the Sequel wears its primary intentions right on its sleeve. I mean, it's right in the title: "For the Sequel."Read more...

For quite some time now, the world has been laughing at the name Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, even as we begged Square Enix to bring it out of Japan. Today's good news: the 3DS role-playing game is indeed coming out of Japan. It'll be released in Europe this year. 2014 for North America. And it'll have a new title in Europe: the folks at Nintendo of Europe say that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is just a temporary name. As for the U.S.? I asked Nintendo of America, and they told me that it'll still be called Bravely Default here, but they haven't picked a subtitle yet. My suggestion: Bravely Default: Theatrhythm: Dissidia[014352532].

The following info and comments come from producer Tomoya Asano...

- has shipped 300,000 copies

“Yes, I’d like to report to everyone that Bravery Default has broken over 300,000 copies shipped. I think by the end of the month, the sales numbers will achieve 300,000.”

- new franchise developments teased

“The official [Bravely Default] Twitter account has been in a silent state lately, partly because the consumer camp has been all out of information. However, from this year to about next year, I’m thinking there are a lot of things that I want to prepare for everyone to look forward to, so please continue to follow the Twitter account. I want to share information with everyone as soon as developments start again, so thank you in advance.”

Reviewer #1:
“Abundant jobs and abilities paired with ability to build up turns spend them in advance. It’s a unique system and it’s awesome. Thinking about tactics is way too fun. With the skill shown in the graphics and story, you’re kind of unsure about whether your should level your characters or advance the story. Lots of benefits from street passes, so it becomes a game you always want to have and walk around with. A supreme game.”
10/10

Reviewer #2:
“The battle system and the brave-and-default system’s excellence and the very tactical battle system will satisfy. On top of that, I get the
impression that the difficulty is kind of high. There are lots of jobs and
abilities, and you feel like it’s really worth developing your characters.
Social stuff like summoning your friends and playing with them is really
neat.”
9/10

Reviewer #3:
“The enemies are strong. It has some meat to it. The battle system is
excellent. The Brave and Default system is really novel. It’s fun to
consider when to build up Brave Points and how to spend them. Really takes advantage of street pass technology. In particular, I liked using the street pass functions to decrease the reconstruction time of the village. That was really cool.”
9/10

Reviewer #4
“At first, it causes you to remember Final Fantasy with its job system; it’s nostalgic like that. That stuff doesn’t go out of style. The graphics look like a picture book, just beautiful. It’s a new game, but the music has an old, classic feel. The battle system and the street pass contents are so extensive, you’ll want to dive into all of the content.”
10/10

One lucky player of Bravely Default just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The image above is from a StreetPass with Tomoya Asano, the producer of Bravely Default. Now that player can summon Asano's character to help in battle. I'm thinking that's a very, very good thing!
